This follows the launch of the office and service centre, located at the Dulcet Centre in Merrivale. Addressing a crowd of about 60 guests, Chamber’s Chairperson, Mano Naidoo said the aim of the HMCC was to build up a network of funders from both government and the private sector. “We have employed other bodies to work with the chamber, and have built quite a large network,” said Naidoo. He listed Independent Devel- opment Corporation, Small Enterprise Finance Agency, Mondi Zimela, Jobs Fund, Trade and Investment KwaZulu Natal, Department of Trade and Indus- try, Agribusiness Development Agency and Ingonyama Trust as some of the organisations which the chamber has strengthened ties with. “We need to build a chamber that works; we call upon the community of the Midlands to rally behind us. The chamber has also hosted a conference which attracted about 35 people. The conference in itself exceeded our expecta- tions as we had hoped for 20 people,” said Naidoo. He said the chamber was moving full steam ahead with a proposal for a micro busi- ness part. Naidoo indicated that the design, which would use shipping containers, will create an approximate 21 busi- nesses. “The type of business will be dictated by the needs of the community. For instance it could be a hair salon, spaza shops, fast food, motor spares, internet cafe, butcher and small bakery,” explained Naidoo. The business park is designed to have social space for both adults and children. “The chamber’s desire is to form a relationship between who would provide mentorship and skills and the bank or any other funding agen- cies,” he said. He expressed optimism at the network that the chamber has garnered over the years. “We now have the luxury of having an office and a boardroom, we are now able to increase our management team, with more experienced executive,” he said. The chamber is also gearing towards skills training and mentorship programs and will be offering seminars on an ongoing basis. “We acknowledge that jobs can be created by, amongst others, attracting new business from outside localities, support- ing the establishment of new enterprises and retaining and expanding existing new busi- nesses” stressed Naidoo. Other projects in the pipeline include the Bayleaf community maga- zine which would be distribut- ing 10,000 magazines along the Midlands Meander and a further 30,000 in the Durban area.
