The smallest thing...makes the biggest difference

FRIDAY 28th February was International Frog Day – a day to acknowledge the importance of

amphibians in keeping waterways clean and consuming mosquito larvae, and yet they are becoming so threatened. Whether you want to be part of the group that was leaping with the frogs or whether you want to see our new Zebra foal – make your way to Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve

(UVNR). UVNR is a little gem only 1km from

Howick. It is a wonderful walking nature reserve with various beautiful trails, or you can use a 4 wheel drive vehicle to drive further along into the reserve. There is a small entrance fee of R25 per person and R12.50 per child under 12. That is cheaper than a movie ticket, and it gives you an entire day’s entertainment. Come and see

some of these cute residents and make a difference to your environment and your life.

Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve: The Environment is in Your Hands

Who are you? The new little Zebra foal at Umgeni Valley is curious about his

‘neighbours’! (Photos supplied by Keran Ducasse)

Frogs are so important to our environment but are sadly under threat.

BIRDLIFE KZN Midlands has achieved 25 years of existence, which

was celebrated at our AGM on Saturday 22nd February at the Fern Hill Hotel. We have published a small magazine especially for the occasion with reminiscences from long standing and older members. So now into our next 25 years!

We will be having an interest-

ing evening meeting at the Amber Valley Centre on Wednesday 19th, when we expect to be packed out, as Adam Riley will pres-ent an illustrated talk entitled ‘South African endemic and near-endemic birds.’ Please do come along and join us, and if you have an Amber Valley entrance card please have it with you to save time at the entrance! Time is 5:30 for 6:00pm, and the cost is a mini-

mum donation of R10pp. Outings continue on some Sundays and our own local one on the last Wednesday of every month. The one on the 26th will be to Fountain Hill Estate near Wartburg. There is a R50.00 cost involved. Please contact Eve Hughes (082 872 4333 or 033-330 2723) for details of time etc.

We have had great excitement as there has been present at the Darvill Sewage Works over a short period, a Western Yellow Wagtail, in fact two birds present, and when a group of us were at the dams a short while ago we had a wonderful view of one of the birds only about 10m away on a dry patch of ground in one of the pans.

Another unusual sighting that has been reported was of a group of Black-bellied Starlings down Umgeni Valley at the Absail Rock. These birds are a locally common resident in coastal and riverine forests, so pretty unusual to fi nd them a wee bit away from the coast, although I have it on good authority that they are some-times seen in Queen Elizabeth Park.

Enjoy your birding, join us when you are free to do so or, better still, join the Club!

Birds and birding

I’M sure you can feel that Winter is sniffi ng around the corner with the lovely cool

mornings and evenings a very welcome relief. It is time to pull out all your dying annuals but remember to collect the seeds fi rst, then dig over and add compost. March is the time to plant sweet peas; prepare your soil well by digging a trench and lining it with newspaper, this will

conserve moisture, and add humus then fi ll it with well rotted compost. The day before planting the seeds water the trench with Epsom salts - 1 heaped teaspoon to 5 litres water - plant your seeds, press fi rmly and water well.

Easy to grow annuals are calendulars, phlox, pansies, linaria, poppies and alyssum to name a few - they all like full sun. Autumn is also a good time to divide perennials - day lilies dietes, agapanthus, bulbines and michaelmas daisies. Prepare the new area well by adding compost and water well until the leaves are looking cheerful. If the weather remains hot, hold back before planting your bulbs. Feed roses to harden them off before winter begins. Mulch, feed and deep water camellias and azaleas.

Veggies: It is time to plant caulifl ower, leeks, lettuce, carrots, turnips, and parsnips. Potatoes can be planted in Autumn and don’t forget your herbs, there is nothing nicer then cooking with fresh herbs!
