Watton-at-Stone is situated midway between Stevenage and Hertford in the valley of the River Beane with a population of approx 2300, living in around 920 households. It offers a peaceful rural life style whilst at the same time having great transport links with access to the A1 and A10, and a train station with a direct line to London Kings Cross and Moorgate.
The A602 formerly ran through the centre of the village between Stevenage and Hertford before a bypass was built in the 1980s through farmland to the north east. The section of the road to Hertford was renamed the A119, and the A602 then ran out of Watton-at-Stone to Ware.
The name Watton fi rst appeared in writing in an eleventh century publication of tenth century Anglo-Saxon wills as Wattun. It was later recorded in the Domesday Book as both Wodtune and Watone. The origin of the word is uncertain, and is variously ascribed to Old English wád, or woad, and ton meaning small farming settlement; or waden meaning ford; or from waétan meaning watery. The suffi x -at-Stone dates from the early thirteenth century and is derived from the presence of two large examples of Hertfordshire puddingstone.
A Roman Road ran from Verulamium (modern St Albans), fording the River Beane at Watton-at-Stone. A battle between the Danes and Saxons took place nearby in 1016 and in later years, the natural springs in the area once made the village a popular spa town.
The village has a number of dwellings dating from early Tudor, such as Watton House, through to late Georgian constructions. Its Flintstone rubble Anglican church dedicated to Saint Mary and Saint Andrew dates from the fi fteenth century and is built in the Perpendicular style.
The Iron Age Aston Mirror was found nearby, closer to Watton-at-Stone than to the village of Aston, but technically in Aston parish due to the convoluted border. It is now kept at the British Museum. A collection of Belgic armour and weaponry was discovered in the mid-19th century by workers digging a drain at the north end of the village.
Famous residents include boxing promoter Frank Warren, the Sun’s racing tipster ‘Templegate’ was also a previous resident of the village. It was the birthplace and childhood home of the actor Rupert Grint, (Ron Weasley in Harry Potter). The famous locomotive
engineer Sir Nigel Gresley lived in Watton House until his death in 1941 and evangelical author and social campaigner Edward Bickersteth was rector of the church for twenty years from 1830 until his death in 1850.
The name is also spelled unhyphenated as Watton at Stone and appears in this form on Ordnance Survey maps.
Sarah Coughlan from Studio C Architects has been a resident in the village for 2.5 years and told us, “I have lived in and around Hertfordshire most of my life, and the move to Watton-at-stone village is hopefully going to be my fi nal move. I feel very lucky to be a resident of the village, which has a really strong community spirit. I have been particularly struck by how friendly and welcoming everyone is; it is so refreshing to actual know, speak and socialise with ones neighbours.”

A typical coming up to school holidays picture...

D came to see me about 10 days ago stressed out. With the holidays looming she was trying to juggle
a roster so the kids would be cared for while she and her partner work; school stuff still needed to be sorted out for September; the in-laws are coming to stay so her house should have a thorough clean; she was busy at work.
She was dying for a holiday herself but money is tighter this year so they are planning only a week away with friends to share the costs. On top of all that she was feeling frazzled, fat and uncomfortable, knowing that her friend will be looking great in swimmers and she won’t.
She didn’t really have the time to come and see me, it was just a sudden urge prompted by something she overheard on the radio about my 5 week weight loss audio programme. How you just listen to an mp3 every day and somehow you start feeling motivated to eat and look better. That sounded easy enough, so D rang to find out more.
She came for an initial consultation and we looked at the stress and how to lessen it so she wouldn’t pick at food so much. With a few extra ideas she realized she was more
organized than she thought and relaxed into the hypnosis. This felt so calming. ‘Perhaps,’ she said, ‘this will help me cope.’
Last week D listened to the first mp3, ‘Taking control’, and has just reported back that she is drinking lots more water and is already far more aware of the food she is eating. She is feeling pleased, finding it quite easy. She even bought a cheap pedometer for herself and one each for the kids so they can compare notes at the end of each day. This way she knows she is toning up, even at work.
This week she is listening to ‘Eating healthily’ which will deal with her sweet cravings. Over the next weeks she will continue with ‘Thinking thin’ and ‘Moving on’. She will probably take the last one, ‘Cruise Control’, on holiday with her. Each audio builds new habits, each one reinforces the last. Each week nice new changes happen.
D is like numerous other people who bought my audios at the new-release, rock-bottom-price; the Summer Slimdown Special. I mean where else could you get 5 weeks intensive weight loss mind programming without having to count calories, drink shakes, take pills, or spend hours at the gym. And, all for £35. It is a bit of a no brainer really.Scan the QRcode here, or go to my website www.marilyntuck.co.uk, weight loss recordings/complete weight loss series. Read the details, listen to a sample, and you decide.

“I have dealt with Wrights over the last 5 years as a landlord and latterly a seller. On the sales team, Nick and Warren always kept me updated and totally informed at all stages, any queries were sorted straight away. They gave good sound advice with regard to the offers on my house and secured a solid sale. They were totally supportive throughout; this made my sale seem very straight forward indeed. On the lettings team, Rebecca has given me excellent service, the team have always sorted out any problems, and maintenance issues were always dealt with promptly. When my tenant gave notice, Wrights found me new tenants straight away, so I did not lose any rental income. GMI Aerials also repair Aerials and Satellite Dishes and provide a fault finding service for TV reception and signal problems, including
re-tuning TV Sets. They can move or re-locate Aerials and Dishes, install new outlet plates, run new cables to various positions i.e. a bedroom, a garage or even a conservatory and can provide the option of Sky Multi-Room.
As a professional Aerial Company; they are accredited by the (CAI Plus) which is the Confederation of Aerial Industries and have had to undergo rigorous checks to become members and only use CAI approved quality equipment and cables. They are RDI-LB registered (a scheme backed by the Government that requires every member to become qualified and undergo important checks) and also members of the Hertfordshire Trading Standards Trustmark Scheme (which means they have been fully checked for issues such as competence and quality of work, qualifications, insurances and financial probity). GMI Aerials’ Engineers are all (CRB) checked, fully trained (including Height Training Certification and NVQ
Level 2 Qualifications), to ensure professional standards are maintained and adhered to and their customer service levels are second to none.
GMI Aerials also provide commercial services for Building and Housing Developers, Housing Associations, Letting Agents and Estate Agents both in the Home Counties and in and around London. Commercial Development Projects range from a small Block of 3 flats to several hundred Flats and include Communal Aerial Services, Regenerations and Updating old systems for brand new TV/FM/DAB/SKY Satellite Services. Systems can be installed on an Outright Purchase basis or on a Rental basis under a Rental Contract which is typically over a 15-20 year period. (An alternative approach for many property developers especially during a recessionary period). GMI Aerials employ Technical Experts who attend Site Meetings and carry out Site Surveys. They then design a TV/FM/DAB/SKY Satellite System in accordance with the Site Specification and Survey for each development. In addition, GMI Aerials Engineers are also Qualified Door Entry Installers and they can provide the same service for Door Entry installations so as to provide the services all under one package so to speak.
Michelle Inder told us, “We are a family run business with family values and we pride ourselves on our excellent customer service, our customers are extremely important to us as we wouldn’t be here without them. We find that 90% of our customers come back to us and a large part of our business comes from word of mouth recommendations. Being in the area for such a long time means that we have a very good relationship with some local High Street Retailers who in turn recommend us to their customers. Our aim is to be as helpful as we can to our customers on the telephone by providing them with the best possible advice we can give on the problems they are experiencing or even with issues such as the Digital Switchover. Our motto is no job is too small or too large; we are just as happy to install a single Aerial or Satellite Dish to one home as we are installing them on multiple occupancy systems on commercial developments. We have
GMI Aerials supply, install, test and commission Aerials and Satellite Dishes to homes, businesses and commercial developments. Based in Welwyn Garden City, they have been running their family business for 16 years and their services include Digital TV/FM/DAB Aerials/FREEVIEW/FREESAT/Satellite Dishes including ASTRA/HOTBIRD and other Foreign Satellites.

installed our Systems in local schools such as Queenswood, Lakeside and Southfield and regularly work with businesses both locally and in and around London. We have a lot of experience working on new builds, building developments, retail parks and shops, commercial premises and tower blocks providing communal aerial and dish installations for flats, apartments and buildings of multiple occupation.”
“GMI Aerials provided an excellent service fi xing my aerial problems. They were pleasant, polite and honest to deal with. They were also clean, quick and effi cient, reasonably priced and also didn’t try to charge me for any item or service I didn’t actually need, as they carefully explained to me. I couldn’t recommend them highly enough” Steve Fawcett, Welwyn Garden City.
I have used GMI aerials several times now and they are brilliant, super service and at a great price!” Martin Symcox, of Sims TV & Video Service, Hatfield.

restaurant is available for functions and holds 40 people for a sit down meal, perfect for private parties, christenings and funerals.
Marian is actively involved in the community and the pub regularly holds fundraising events for various charities. This year she has been raising money for Herts Air Ambulance with race nights, a bike ride and she is just about to fly off to Italy to climb 3 volcanoes!
The Chequers had one surprise that I hadn’t counted on, a Secret Zoo! In the garden there is a zoo area with Continental Giant Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Miniature Chickens, Chipmunks, Quails, BooBook Owls and the main stars Ralph and Ruby – an adorable pair of Indian Eagle Owls which are just a few months old. This is perfect for children to see while parents are enjoying a drink or bite to eat in the garden over the summer.
Opening times are Tuesday to Saturday 12pm – 11pm, Monday 4pm to 11pm and Sunday 12pm – 9pm. Food is served Tuesday to Friday from 12pm – 2.30pm and 6pm – 8.30pm, Sunday 12pm – 3pm and Saturday 12pm – 8.30pm.

local business
Over the last 18 months the business has
grown from 2 marquees and a few chairs to 7 marquees with a spectrum of extra’s to really make any event a memorable occasion including lining, carpets, lighting, heating and a selection of furniture hire.
The business was set up by Mark Hammond after looking for an alternative venue for a party as he didn’t want the cost and constraints of a Village Hall. He looked in to hiring a small marquee which is a lot less restricted and means you can enjoy the party in the comfort of your own home; however most marquees available are too large for smaller events, and finding a small marquee hire company that can do the whole package wasn’t easy. So that’s where Abacus comes in.
“Finding a small marquee hire company that can do the whole package wasn’t easy. So that’s where Abacus comes in.”
Abacus’ marquees are garden friendly and a great way to instantly extend your home for an event. They are available in a range of sizes (3m x 6m, 6m x 6m, 4m x 10m, 8m x 10m) and can accommodate 20-200 guests. They can be installed on grass, patio’s or decking and can be butted up right onto the house – to instantly extend their home!

From Stress to SuccessDo you sometimes feel stressed out and exhausted? The great news is that Pilates exercise can often do as much for your mind and how you feel as your body. Lifestyle Pilates expert Beverley Densham who’s been running the studios in Hatfield since 1998 says:
“ What we often find at the studio is that the majority of people start Pilates because they have suffered from backache, posture problems, have had an operation such as a knee replacement, back op, are feeling unfit and untoned and want to improve their body. What’s great is that so many clients who arrived “stressed out” find that an hour of Pilates helps them switch off from daily life, they then find they can incorporate it into their daily lives which is invaluable”
So it will be great for you to meet the team, there’s a photo of Phil Bennett teaching a private lesson, Fiona McIntosh, Christine Brook and Beverley Densham teaching classes and a workshop. They all teach all levels of Pilates helping you learn and benefit regularly from the 8 principles of Pilates which are: Relaxation, Breathing, Centring, Alignment, Concentration, Co-ordination, Flowing movements and Stamina.
TOP TIP this month is: Have a lie down every day, either lie quietly, put some relaxing or favourite music or the radio on, breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth for 1-20 minutes, lying with your knees bent hip width apart, on a good quality mat or blanket folded into four with a small cushion behind your head to support your neck. (breathe naturally if you prefer). This will benefit your back, neck, posture and relaxation levels. Enjoy!
Taster sessions for only £10 (inc. a £5 discount), available daytime, evening and Saturdays 12-1pm.
New special offer on all Pilates memberships: 1 months membership FREE, if you pay for your fi rst year in advance, available to current clients & new members.

The majority of people we speak to at Abbotts are fearful of Inheritance Tax and Long Term Care fees. Last year the Treasury gained £53 million from people who died without a Will and on average a decent nursing home in the South East will cost more than £50,000 per year. At Abbotts we can help and assist with ensuring these fears are put to rest allowing you peace of mind in your later years that you have done all you can to protect your hard earned assets and family.
Also, to celebrate the amazing events happening this summer, from now until the end of September we will be offering our Diamond Summer Package. This is aimed primarily at those aged 55 and over, ensuring protection of wealth. We will arrange appointments at a convenient time for you, either at your home or at our office in Hertford.
“After our successful Will Clinics last year I‘ve decided to hold them again. It was a great opportunity to meet the local people and to answer their questions. I’m looking forward to doing the same again this year.”Jo Briley, Estate Planning Manager
To take advantage of our Diamond Summer Package ensure an appointment is booked before the end of September by calling us on 01992 535 135. The Diamond Summer Package includes Mirror Wills, a Will Trust,
a Severance of Tenancy, 2 Lasting Powers of Attorney’s (LPAs), Registration of LPAs and 2 Living Wills.
