From the LED to the Complete Lighting Solution

Powerful LEDs are advancing ever more to the fore as ultra-modern lighting, not least because of rising energy prices and due to Ordinance 245/2009 of the European Commission, which defines the basic parameters for opting out of obsolete lighting technologies and opens up enormous potential for the deployment of LEDs in the lighting market. In the next few years, LED lighting should account for more than ten percent of turnover with a worldwide market vol-ume of some 1.4 billion dollars.

It is to be expected that the lighting sector will develop into the main money-maker for electronic component distribu-tors by 2015.

Apart from their environmental acceptability, high-quality lighting diodes are above all up to ten times more energy efficient and offer more versatile design possibilities than conventional lighting.

A further plus factor of the LEDs is their extremely long service life, which can lie between 25.000 and up to 100.000 hours depending on their design. Apart from the supply of all components required, the realisation of in-novative lighting systems based on powerful LEDs also requires specialist technical and economic knowledge.

Above all, technical knowledge of high power LEDs and high-brightness LEDs, secondary optics and driver electronics as well as ingenious heat management are required. The experts at the MSC lighting competence centres support you here with sound technical and economic consulting expertise when planning your lighting.

MSC works with leading manufacturers in the LED fields and supplies everything in one package from the LED to the complete lighting system. Be inspired by the many possibili-ties of modern LED technology and arrange an appointment with our experts today.

Cromaticity DiagrammCree’s Standard Chromaticity Regions plotted on the 1931 CIE Curve

In 1931, the International Commission on illumination (CIE) devised a method for representing colour. The CIE 1931 Chromaticity Diagram is a tool intended to illustrate the way the human eye experiences light, using an x, y coordi-nate system. The outer boundary represents colours with a purity of 100% and the wavelength is listed in nanometers.

The XLamp MT-G EasyWhite LED is optimized for high-output, small-form-factor, directional-lighting applications, such as LED-based MR retrofit bulbs, accent, track and down lighting. XLamp MT-G LEDs enable designs with consistent colour, small form factor and unprecedented performance. While achieving high lumen output from a space-constrained and thermally-constrained form factor has been challenging in the past, MT-G enables 35–50-watt halogen MR16 retrofit lamps. In addition, the MT-G LED can be driven to much higher currents in less con-strained designs, achieving up to 1525 lumens at 4 A at 85°C in warm-white (3000-K) colour temperatures. XLamp MT-G LEDs are the industry’s first LEDs to be binned for luminous flux and chromaticity at 85°C, which can simplify luminaire design calculations and speed time-to-market.

The extensive applications of this product include:nIndoor and outdoor lightingnColour mixingnStage lightingnAviationnAlso being great for high peak intendsy beams

Carclo Technical Plastics releasesa new range of 30 mm TIR optics for use with a range of large dome, multi-chip LED’s. The 30mm optic works well with single-chip LED packages providing high peak intensities or narrow beam divergences compared to smaller diameter optics. The optic is now available in a wide range of beam angles: narrow, fine-frosted, medium-frosted, wide-frosted and elliptical. The dynamic design behind this particular innovative prod-uct, embraces an Advanced Transform lens design com-bined with frosted optic technology to effectively minimise any chip-image or colour-separation effects, along with high optical efficiency.

Carclo has taken its high efficiency 10 mm TIR optical design cross-section and extruded it to produce a revolu-tionary optical component. This optic can be used to collect light from a long strip of LEDs and project at a 30 degree beam in one direction. Designers and Engineers can use this illumination for applications such as under cabinet lighting, wall washing, corridor or other interior or archi-tectural lighting applications. The optic is over 75 % efficient and is designed to give a high light output using compact LEDs such as the Cree XP-E. We offer two standard lengths, part no.10397 which is 1200 mm long and part number 10398, which is 300 mm long. Other custom lengths up to 2 metres are available on request.

Metalcore PCBs for XLamp® High Power LEDs

Featuresn Easy to usen RoHS and REACH compliantn Rear side potential freen Available for every Cree HP Series

Even though LEDs have better efficiency than traditional light sources, the waste of temperature is really high. Through the very small light emitting Chip-area a heat dissipation is in most of the cases absolutely essential. Because with increasing Chip-temperature the Brightness is decreasing. Also the Lifetime is direct affected by the heat stress. With the MSC PCB series for High Power LEDs you can make a basic step to go easily more efficient with an higher lifetime.

E910.25, E910.26The single channel DC/DC controllers for external N-channel power MOSFETs are dedicated to drive a LED string. The ICs support step up, step down, flyback, SEPIC or Cuk topology. In addition to the E910.26, the E910.25 includes enhanced short circuit and overload protection.

E910.27, E910.28 Step down DC/DC controller with internal or external reference voltage. The devices are suitable for SMPS or constant current LED driver applica-tions. The E910.27 includes a FET to drive up to 2.8 A.

E981.06* Combined single channel SMPS and LED controller. It is suitable for con-stant current, dimmable LED drivers or constant voltage SMPS, both with high efficiency.Product Specifications

ELMOS “made in Germany” ICs are well known as high quality products and the devices are widely used in applications where high reliability is needed. All de-vices are qualified for use in automotive applications. The DC/DC converter and driver IC lineup covers a small number of ICs that are suited to drive high bright-ness (HB) LEDs. Excellent power efficiencies and marginal EMI issues are the basis for robust and stable end products.

E910.96*Combining a multi-topology SMPS with four LED current controllers the E910.96* is an ideal solution for step up, flyback, buck-boost or SEPIC topologies. Each of the four channels includes two programmable reference voltages and can drive four LED strings separately.

E981.01 A multiphase booster IC which can drive up to nine phases. This device is dedicated to high voltage applications and can power loads up to 500 W or more. Just ceramic capacitors on the input and output side are required to save space, increase lifetime and re-duce cost of the complete system. Thisdevice is dedicated to high-brightness LED modules.

RL78 Lighting ASSP

LED Control Demonstration KitThe RL78/I1A DC/DC LED control demonstration kit enables system designers to experience the benefits of MCU-based solutions for LED driver development. They can also learn about LED constant current control and various methods of dim-ming using the lighting-specific RL78/I1A MCUs. The board implements a programmable 3-channel LED constant 350 mA current control in buck converter topology. An important feature of the kit is the new version of a very comprehensive and easy-to-use software GUI tool, called the Applilet EZ for HCD. The Applilet EZ for HCD enables very easy graphical configuration of an LED lighting system while also generating pre-compiled C code for the RL78/I1A MCUs. It enables system designers to program the target device using only a USB cable. Using the Applilet EZ for HCD software tool, they can generate communication protocol stacks for DALI and DMX512 in seconds.
