106 News Friday, April 10th, 2015 This week feels like it flew by. It was so great to have everything back to normal. It feels like everyone has matured so much. It is truly amazing to see how far each student has come this year. On Monday, I asked the students to think of a new reading goal. The students were able to reflect on their progress and pick something tricky to focus on. When I think back to September, when we came up with our hopes and dreams, I remember the kiddos struggling. The ability to reflect and set goals is how learning happens. The kiddos in 106 are learning new things because of their own motivation and hard work. I am encouraging the kiddos to make choices in our classroom that challenge them. This week we are spending time during small group reading to really focus on vowel sounds! Vowels sure are tricky. They are long, they are short, sometimes they are silent, they act weird together, sometimes they all sound a like BUT, they are needed for every single word. Uftah! It is frustrating so we sing about it. Vowel Bat and Two Vowels go Walking, are our favorites right now. Additionally, we are having tons of fun reading books written and illustrated by our Author in focus, Eric Carle. Patterns repeat but they also grow and shrink. This week we began our unit on growing and shrinking patterns. This unit is fun! So far, we have created our own growing patterns using blocks and grid paper. This week feels like it flew by.

The students are challenged to find the growth patterns in puzzles, art, and other images. We are still working on subtraction but focusing on its use in the real world. The students have all been growing grass in our classroom for a couple of weeks and after break our grass was in need of a haircut! We all enjoyed creating our grass’s first haircut certificated. We measured the grass (with blocks) before cutting and after to figure how much that we cut off!

During Writer’s Workshop this week we talked about a lot of poetry. The students had the opportunity to look at some poetry written by other kindergarteners. Together we watched a short clip of kites flying in the sky at the international kite festival and wrote a poem about it. We focused on writing what we felt, what they looked like, and what they reminded us of.

Please look for homework and a MN Zoo Field Trip Slip in your child’s folder!Have a great weekend.
