INTRODUCTION

During the 2005-2006 year, the Diversity Action Council (DAC) met and developed a blueprint for a campus-wide strategic plan to further develop diversity at Wagner College. During the course of that process, the council determined that many of the areas being considered as part of their charge were also issues that related to the College’s commitment to internationalization. Therefore, it was suggested that an Internationalization Action Council (IAC) be created to begin a systematic campus-wide discussion focusing on internationalization as it is related to all members of the Wagner College community. It was recommended that IAC’s charge should include examining the campus climate, faculty, staff and student learning related to globalization and the College’s place in a larger global context. The IAC would include students, faculty, and staff members.

The Internationalization Action Council (IAC) was formed and the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs gave the following charge:

1.) Advise and report to the Provost on issues related to internationalization; more specifically to:

a) Identify ways to strengthen international relationships outside of Wagner College.

b) Increase opportunities for all Wagner College students to have meaningful contact with other cultures through the academic curriculum, study abroad opportunities, and student, faculty, and staff exchanges.

c) Recognize and honor exemplary actions and individuals that contribute to a supportive campus climate.

d) Increase professional development opportunities for Wagner College faculty and staff through international programs, exchanges, and scholarship.

e) Bring to the appropriate faculty standing committees suggested changes that fall within the faculty and/or the Faculty Handbook domain.

f) Collaborate, where appropriate, with the DAC to further domestic and international diversity.

g) Further the mission of Wagner College in relation to international civic engagement opportunities.

h) Deepen the internationalization component of the curriculum in relation to institutional student learning goals, departmental student learning goals, and course specific student learning goals.

2

Page 3: wagner.eduwagner.edu/.../IAC-Blueprint-Draft-Update-November-2013.docx · Web viewSarah Scott, Assistant Professor of Art Jean-Claude Darne, Graduate MBA Student Hugh Gilmore, Undergraduate

2.) Investigate the following questions:a) How can Wagner College take steps to increase international opportunities among

faculty, staff, and students?

b) How can Wagner College foster a campus climate that encourages leadership and innovation around issues of internationalization?

c) How can Wagner College enhance our international content and issues across the curricula?

The IAC consists of eleven members: four faculty members, four administrators, and three students. The IAC met on a weekly basis during the 2006-2007 Academic Year to address the charge and investigate the questions. They worked to survey the current climate and make recommendations for the future to support the mission and strategic plan of the College.

Wagner College prepares students for life, as well as for careers, by emphasizing scholarship, achievement, leadership and citizenship. Wagner offers a comprehensive educational program that is anchored in the liberal arts, experiential and co-curricular learning, interculturalism, interdisciplinary studies, and service to society, and that is cultivated by a faculty dedicated to promoting individual expression, reflective practice and integrative learning.

Internationalization Action Council MissionApproved by the Internationalization Action Council, May 2007

In the spirit of furthering the mission and strategic plan of the College, the Internationalization Action Council (IAC) seeks to enhance the multifaceted liberal education which provides our students with the opportunity to prepare for life and careers within the rapidly changing global community.

OVERVIEW:

The Internationalization Action Council spent the 2006-2007 academic year assessing the current campus climate on issues of internationalization. For this purpose, the council met weekly with various constituencies such as students who studied abroad, international students, faculty, administrators, staff and alumni. The council appraised current course offerings, conducted a site visit to Arcadia University, met with various international

Based on information gathered, the following goals are proposed:

DEVELOPMENT

CURRENT CAMPUS CLIMATE – Through conversations among the council as well as with focus groups with faculty and staff, it was determined that there are many events occurring on campus that highlight internationalization. Examples of this can be found through Academic and Cultural Enrichment (ACE) events, Center for International Business Strategic Studies (CIBSS) forums, Celebrate Diversity!, the Mosaic Coalition, etc. However, there is no clearinghouse for the collection and distribution of information. Also, the council determined that responsibility for the aforementioned activities was widely dispersed throughout the institution and that no single individual was charged with the responsibility of coordinating the various activities. Currently, there is a person whose full time position is that of an Academic Advisor who also serves as the International Student Advisor; there is a full time Faculty member who also serves as our Study Abroad Advisor; there is a full time Faculty member who also serves as the coordinator of the Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) program, and a full time Dean whose duties include serving as the Director of Internationalization. However, not all activities that the council identified as relating to internationalization reported to the Director.

VI. Curriculum

CURRENT CAMPUS CLIMATE – The IAC recognizes that Wagner College has an Intercultural (I) and American Diversity (D) component in the general education requirement and the First Year Program incorporates conversations around diversity and intercultural issues. The newly developed “Expanding Your Horizons” program has increased opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to explore issues of diversity and internationalization away from Wagner’s campus. The Academic Policy Committee (APC) shares with the IAC that they are reassessing the current core requirements and encouraging professors to re-designate appropriate courses as (I) or (D).

RECOMMENDATIONS – The IAC recommends the following:

a. The IAC will encourage academic departments to internationalize their curriculum through the use of technology.

b. Language requirement for International Business Undergraduate Majors c. Focus on faculty day long conference focused on internationalization (January

2008)d. Wagner College’s Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor

Hoesly from Hellenic American University team teach a course titled: “Intercultural Business Communications”. This course addresses communication skills necessary in any cross cultural business interaction. The course involves students from two separate locations, interacting throughout the semester. Students from Wagner College (Staten Island, New York) and students from the Hellenic American University (Athens, Greece), interact electronically and visually during class sessions. This will result in a synchronous team taught course, whereby students from each institution will observe the professors teaching during the class and will be able to interact with students in each of the course locations. Each student will be partnered with a student from the other location in order to complete term length projects.

e. Increase “Expanding Your Horizons” opportunities for faculty, students and staff. Further enhance the quality of programs Assess quality of student experiences Participation of staff members Designed a post-travel evaluation on Survey Monkey and the IAC is in the process of developing a post-course evaluation.

a. EYH committee re-designed application materials to make the application process easier to understand.

b. EYH committee required all faculty to bring a staff member or an administrator as the logistical coordinator.
