Charlie and Bertha moved to Gillette, WY in Sept. 1923. They bought a farm about four miles south of Gillette where they ran a dairy -milked cows, bottled milk and delivered there product door to door. The farm was sold after Bertha died in 1967. Harrold Hitt (1998) still owns part of that farm which he bought from the estate. Charlie farmed with a team of horses up to the time he passed away. No tractors to pack down his farm ground.

The Hitt Family Charles and Bertha (Harrod) Hitt left Doniphan Nebraska in September 1923 with five children: Ada 9, Ruth 7, Raymond 'Ray' 5, Harold 4, Doris 9 months, in and old Overland touring car for Gillette, Wyoming to make their new home. Mr Hitt had purchased the Arthur Tipton homestead two and one half miles south of Gillette in 1920. His father James E. Hitt came with him and purchase land four miles east of Gillette. The Hitt family sent their possessions (household goods, furniture, some cows and horses, farm equipment and old buggy and 'old Rover') ahead in a railroad immigrant car, which arrived in Gillette ahead of them. A friend, 'Tater' Ralston came along to care for the contents. Their possessions were put in storage to wait their arrival, meanwhile, the Hitt's adventure led across country camping their way. The first night they stopped at a farmers fresh straw pile to fill ticks (Bertha had made) for sleeping on the ground, with little folks in the car. Many days of travel led them over hills, rough roads, high center trails, fording creeks, and flat tires that were fixed along the road. This gave the children a chance to run and play , while Bertha prepared food to eat. On rainy days, curtains were put on the car to keep them dry, but they came safely through.

The excitement of seeing their new home, an old abandoned house high on the hill, along with a 'tar-paper' shack, which was to become a temporary home, mean while, the family found rest with the Bert Harrod family. Ada and Ruth enrolled in the Gillette schools. The shack was moved onto the harvested wheat field and put in liveable repair, finally the furniture and the family moved into the 12x28 space. Daytime, the beds were stacked to gather in one corner with baby's trundel bed roll under and they were home at last. Rains came, the roof leaked, and mud got deep around the door. Work began , moving the 'big' house from the hill top. It took many hours spent in repair. New windows, doors walls covered with blue building paper, a stairway into the attic foe sleeping room. Alas, snows came, it blew in around the windows and the nail holes in the unfinished attic roof. The shack was then moved alongside to become a parlor and bedroom. The family water supply was hauled in until a well could be dug, With hand pump for family and livestock. Many years later a well was drilled and a windmill setup, still the only running water was carried in a bucket, with the command 'hurry'. During the years a cistern was built for rain water supply. The first winter brought hard work, illness and being quarantined in, but soon spring came. It was time for spring planting a garden and fields. A cave also dug for vegetable storage, later a second cave also served as a cooler for milk and food. There was no refrigeration. The Overland car had been traded for milk cows and horses. Our transportation became the old horse and buggy for many years. In a few years a three room house was purchased at the old Peerless Mine sale. It was divided and added to the 'bid' house for added space. The shack was again moved, this time to ).come a shop and garage.

The family was settled into their permanent home. Soon three more children were added, Charles, Maxine and Norma. As time went along, milking cows became a small kitchen operated dairy. The milk was bottled and delivered each day before school with a team of horses and wagon. The milk was delivered house to house, to restaurant and grocery store. Ada was in charge. There were four Hitts and three neighbor boys on their way to school. However, in a few years the dairy was given up and the younger children were sent to the Harrod school three miles down the stock county trail. They drove a team of horses with a two wheeled cart to school, Ray in charge. Ada and Ruth road a school bus to High School. Ada graduated in 1931 and became a

teacher. Ruth's health failed, no more school. Im 1932 and 1933 during the depression we started a dairy, with a car to deliver until Charles went to college and Dad sold out. Ray and Harold never finished High School. The rest of the children graduated at Campbell County High School. Doris was our only college graduate, although Charles and Norma attended college in Idaho for two years. The family grew up and scattered into New Mexico, Missouri, Nevada, Kansas and Oregon With three still around Gillette. Charley and Bertha raised eight children, all living (1990) twenty-four grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren (1990).

The Hitt farm was divided and sold in estate settling. Harrold lives on the old George Tipton homestead that his father leased for several years and purchased in 1945. The James E. Hitt estate land was sold in 1938 to State Experiential Farm, and later sold to Campbell County for the County Camplex, a growing community center with Theater, Rodeo and Fairgrounds, and Picnic Area.

The Hitt family grew up working together. They were never rich in money, but God blessed them with a happy life, rich in experience and close family ties.

Information received by Fred E. Brown, who is in charge of funeral arrangements, indicated that he had been driving a tractor and that he may have suffered a sudden and fatal illness, causing him to fall from the tractor. Mr. Hitt had lived in Pomona intermittently, since 1902. He was 51 years old, a native of Nebraska and came to California 31 years ago from Nebraska. He was a member of the Scottish Rite in Los Angeles, a Pomona Valley Shrine Club, which is affiliated with Al Malaikah temple, A.A.O.N.M.S., the Christian church, and the Fraternal Brotherhood. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Grace Ellen Hitt; a daughter, Mrs. Lillian Morrow, Claremont; his son, Thomas C. Hutt, Claremont; his father, J.E. Hitt, Grand Island, Nebraska, a brother, Charles Hitt, Gillette, Wyoming, and two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Clay, Belvidere, Nebraska, and Mrs. Grace Kesel, Costa Mesa, California. BROKEN SPINE FATAL TO HITT Former Pomonan Declared To Have Died Instantly In Tractor Accident. October 28, 1933 - Thomas O. Hitt, employee of the Southern California Edison Co., Ltd., whose body was found near the Tujunga patrol station 21 miles northwest of Pasadena Wednesday afternoon, suffered a broken spine in a tractor accident which claimed his life a few minutes before the body was discovered, according to autopsy reports. Hitt and other men were working on the company's private Vincent road and he was taking the tractor in after the day's work when the accident occurred, it was stated. A man who had gone ahead of Hitt returned over the route when Hitt did not appear. He found the body about 12 feet from the edge of the roadway and the smashed tractor some 150 feet farther on. It appeared, according to reports received here, that Hitt had turned the tractor at right angles off the road. A doctor who examined the body 30 minutes after its discovery is reported to have declared death was instantaneous. Funeral services will be held at the Fred E. Brown funeral home at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon, the Rev. Charles F. Hutslar officiating. Interment will be in Pomona Cemetery, and Masons will be in charge of services at the grave. Biography Information for Roy "Rhino" Hitt - P 1903-06, 1909-16 Oakland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vernon/Venice Roy "Rhino" Hitt was born on June 22, 1887 in Carleton, Nebraska. The 5'10", 200lb. lefty threw like a charging rhino. He was inducted into the PCL Hall of Fame for his 202 wins in 9 seasons. Seven of those seasons he won over twenty games. Hitt began his career in 1903 with Oakland, pitching a scant 15 innings late in the season with a 2.93 ERA.

1904 saw Hitt in two uniforms, with Los Angeles and San Francisco for very brief appearances in a total of 9.3 innings of work with an orbital 8.68 ERA.San Francisco stuck with Hitt, who made the club in 1905. Their faith was rewarded as Hitt's 25-14 record came off of 42 games and 346 innings pitched. He served up only 69 earned runs and 218 Ks with a smoking 1.79 ERA. 1906 saw Hitt's record with the Seals rise to 31-12 in 403 innings of work with 85 earned runs, 220 Ks and a blistering 1.90 ERA. His 31 wins would be a career high. Following that great 1906 season, in 1907, at age 20, Hitt was called up to the majors. He played for Cincinnati, where he had a less than spectacular 6-10 season with a .375 win percentage and a 3.40 ERA. Hitt returned to the PCL in 1909 playing with Vernon. It was a tough year. Vernon did not have the kind of clubs that San Francisco produced. Hitt had little backing him up. He ended the year with a disappointing 15-30 record in 48 games despite a near-career high 194 Ks and a respectable 2.38 ERA.The following year saw a better ballclub and Hitt return to his old form. He went 26-17 with his second straight year of Ks over the century mark at 105, and an ERA dropping to a career best 1.68. Hitt stayed with Vernon until 1912. He was traded to Venice in 1913, where he continued to win more than twenty games. By the end of 1914, Rhino had charged his way though five straight 20 game-winning seasons. In 1915, Hitt was traded back to Vernon. Wear and tear slowed down the hard-throwing hurler. A 15-11 record saw the first season where Hitt threw less than 100 Ks in ten years. His ERA rose to 2.51. The final season of the Rhino came in 1916, some thirteen years after his brief debut with Oakland. He appeared in only four games before hanging it up. Over his career, Hitt pitched 3,117.7 innings with over 1,448 Ks, only 908 BBs and 785 earned runs and a 202-146 record. He was inducted into the Pacific Coast League (PCL) Hall of Fame in 2004 for his achievements on the mound. LINDALE, Nov. 27- Mrs. Emma Wells, 78, died at her home near Lindale early Friday after and eight month illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Damascus Baptist Church with Rev. Kelly Mosley and Rev. Humphries officiating. Burial will be in Damascus Cemetery under direction of York-Caudle-Gregory Funeral Home.

Survivors include four sons, Arthur and Frank Wells, of Lindale; Felix Wells, Red Springs, and Marvin Wells, Dallas; a daughter, Mrs. Corine Land, of Lindale; three sisters, Mrs. Dolly Wade, Mrs. Minnie Matthews and Mrs. Ida Ward, all of Tyler; four brothers, Sam Hitt, Mt. Sylvan, and Sol Hitt and Abe Hitt of Sand Flat; Milton Hitt of Grand Saline; 21 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Wells was a lifelong resident of Lindale community. She was a member of Damascus Baptist Church.

My parents were James Solomon and Fannie Wells Hitt. We lived 2 miles northeast of Sand Flat in a 2-story house on a hill at the end of the road. Dr. Thompson came to the house in a buggy and delivered us. He looked like the "Gun SmokeDoctor."

I had one brother, Hoyle, born October 17, 1902; one sister, Loma, born January 12, 1904. Aunt Dolly Hitt, born February 15, 1893, lived there also. We farmed cotton, corn, peas, potatoes, ribbon cane (made syrup), and baled hay. We had horses, mules, cows, sheep, hogs, chickens, turkeys, and guineas. We had peach trees, apple trees, pear trees, plum trees, watermelons and a garden.

There were 3 rent houses on the farm, some rented on the 1/2, some on 3/4. We had about a mile of rail fence. Papa and the hands split the rails which were around the hog pastures.

Another brother, Rabon, was born January 29, 1909. Dr. Thompson delivered him also.

One time Papa moved some hogs to the Sabine River to fatten them on acorns. Uncle Boss Hitt, Papa's brother, stayed with them in a tent. When they got fat, we drove them to Hawkins. We lost some crossing the Sabine River over a high bridge. He shipped them in a boxcar to the Ft. Worth Stockyards. Later, he shipped a load from Tyler to Ft. Worth.

We would go to Tyler about twice a year to get groceries. Papa would buy sugar in 100-lb. sacks, lard in 50-lb cans, and flour in 48-lb. sacks. The wagon would be loaded and the team would be tired when we got home.

Another sister, Louise, was born August 12, 1912. Dr. Thompson delivered her, too.

We had some hands living in the house with us. Papa paid them about $25.00 a month, and furnished board. Mama, Aunt Dolly and Loma did all the cooking and washing. They had a big black washpot and a wood cook stove. We had 2 fireplaces and had to cut a lot of wood.

We went squirrel hunting, rabbit hunting and possum hunting. Uncle Ab, Papa's brother, had a real good squirrel dog (old Ring). We had 2 dogs, Rover and Cuff. Sometimes we would go to the Sabine River to hunt and fish.

One time we started to go to see Uncle Luke and Aunt Ida Ward (Papa's sister) at Starrville. We started down the hill in the wagon when a wheel hit a stump and we turned over. Mama's head hit a knot on a rail fence and Aunt Dolly's head hit the brake. They were not hurt too badly, but we didn't go on.

Bond's Branch ran along the meadow. We dug a pond with a scraper, turned the branch through it, irrigated the meadow, then turned it back into the creek bed. I learned to swim in it, with a syrup bucket under my arms.

Another brother, Tracy, born November 14, 1914. Dr. Thompson delivered him.

We had a big barn built out of logs, with a corn crib on each side, a hay rack in the middle and 8 horse stables. We had a blacksmith shop I don't think anybody knew how to use it.

We had a shelf on the porch and a cedar water bucket with a dipper (everybody drank out of it), one wash pan, one towel, and soap. We took a bath in a #3 wash tub.

Another brother, Lloyd, March 29, 1917. Dr. Thompson delivered him.

There was a skating rink upstairs. We would have skating parties up there.

Four of us boys slept in the south room. There was no heat in there in winter so we stayed at the fireplace until bedtime. In the summer all the windows were up.

Papa had two matched mules, Roody and Huldy. Sometimes he would drive them to church with the bridles off. He talked to them, "Gee and Haw."

Sometimes on Saturday, we would kill a steer, cut it up, keep what we wanted, put the rest in tubs and peddle the meat out through Sand Flat.

We walked two miles to school. One time I had a donkey -- he was too slow -- I was always tardy. The teacher wrote "mischievous" on my report card. Papa said that when we got a whipping at school, we would get another when we got home, and we did!

We had Uncle Allen and Aunt Minnie Matthews (Papa's sister). Uncle Allen was Warden at the Poor Farm at Elkton about 5 miles south of Tyler. We went there in the surrey, or wagon, and spent the night. Some of the prisoners broke out that night, and there was lots of excitement the next day. Their son, Connie, was my age. We spent a lot of time together.

We had a hay bailer, syrup mill, corn sheller, pea thrasher and sheep shears. When we sheared the sheep, we laid them on their back, started on their bellies and took the wool off in one piece, about 9 lbs.

Another sister, Crystal, born May 7, 1919. Dr. Thompson delivered her.

About 1912, Papa built a bathtub with rock and concrete. Oh, it was a dandy!! Better than the #3 tub.

Mr. Thomas, a renter at the spring, had a little girl who was on her way home from school and was bitten by John Russeau's dog, our neighbor. Papa got his shotgun, went to John's house and shot the dog. It didn't help our relations with them.

About 1914, we got a T-Model. What fun!! One Saturday when Papa went to town, Lloyd and I hitched the mules (not very gently) to the wagon to get a load of wood. We started down the hill, the wagon made a lot of racket and the mules ran away. They hit a tree - one mule on one side and the other on the other side. The wagon was damaged. We were not hurt but we were worried what Papa would do. He didn't do anything.

Another brother, Dewitt, born July 29, 1923. Dr. Thompson delivered him.

There was a big cellar in the house full of canned vegetables and fruit, about 40 buckets of ribbon cane syrup. There was a smokehouse used for cotton seed and hams. When we killed hogs, we would boil water in the pot, pack a barrel 45" in the ground, drop the hog in, jerk it out and the hair would slip off. The water had to be just right - you had to wiggle your finger in it to sec if it was right. We didn't eat bacon or drink coffee. They did keep some coffee for the preacher, when he stayed with us.

One time, we talked Mama into taking us to school in the car. She backed-out of the garage, kept on backing, backed into the house, knocked a sill back and damaged the car. She never tried to drive again.

About 1923, the barn burned and about 7 head of horses and cows, and all the corn and hay burned. The people from Sand Flat came down and built a new barn in one day.

One time Hoyle and I were plowing, and when we started to the house we rode our mules. Hoyle didn't hang up his lines, so when he started to pull them in, one got under the mule's tail. It pitched him off.

One Sunday, at church, Uncle Columbus Wiley (Mama's uncle) told me he would give me a job "on the County Road," if Papa would let me work. Papa said, "Go ahead, but you will never be any good on the farm any more." He was right - I went to work for the County at $2.00 a day. We camped in a tent at Friendship and Joy. I drove the lead team to the grader pulled by 6 mules. The next year they got a new Commissioner and we lost our jobs.

Don Carroll and I went on a hamburger and cotton-picking tour to Onno, Texas, and from there to Slayton, Texas, and back home. Uncle Silas Baker (Mama's brother-in-law, married to Aunt Bert) gave me a job at the gin.

Next, Lem Matthews gave me a job at the store at Sand Flat. We had a cousin in Detroit, Michigan. He said that if we would come up there, we would get a job. Connie Matthews, Ralph Wiley (son of Charlie and Polly Wiley, husband of Maxine Wilbanks Wiley) and I went there and got jobs in 1928 in Pontiac, Michigan. I came back home in 1929 and went to work for Richard Hardwick at the Gulf Station, corner of Bow and Bois d'Arc. I then bought the station from him, and ran it until 1936 when I sold it to Arthur Exum.

Aubry Byrd and I bought the City Service Station from Johnny Beckham, corner Elm and Broadway, in 1936. I sold to Aubrey in 1939, and bought the Humble Station, corner of Oakwood and Bois d'Arc in July, 1939. Sold the station. Johnny Crawley and I went in the used car business, corner of Oakwood and College.

I had an apartment at 620 N. Ward, where Bill Taylor lived. Cousin Jewel Ashcraft introduced me to a girl working at Caldwell-Hughes-Delay & Allen, Zonetta Collins. We got married January 5, 1941, and moved into the apartment at 620 N. Ward. Johnny and I split up during the war.

I bought a lot at 1823 W. Erwin and am still here at present (May, 1984) with a wife, 2 daughters, 2 sons-in-law, 5 grandchildren - and about to become a great grandfather any time. LINDALE-James Solomon Hitt, 78, died at 6 p.m. Sunday at Rusk, following an illness of one year.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Sand Flat Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. W. A. McAlister officiating. Interment will be in Sand Flat Cemetery under the direction of York-Caudle-Gregory Funeral Home of Lindale.

A lifelong resident of Sand Flat Community, Mr. Hitt was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church. He was a farmer, and had been a Sand Flat groceryman for the last 20 years.

He married Nancy Vedester Burgess (7152) on 18 Dec 1892 at Camanche Co., Texas. He died on 26 Jan 1951 at San Angelo, Tom Green Co., Texas, at age 82.Biography Information for Nancy was called 'Dester.' Juanita remembers that Dester was small lady and sick with asthma a lot, was very quiet and sat in a rocker in front of a window and rocked for hours. Dester kept her head tied up in a bandana. She and John lived in a one room house (divided by a colonade) in San Angelo. They had an outhouse. They were poor and lived mostly on dried salt pork that they fried, biscuits and syrup, and gravy. They had milk and possibly eggs and oatmeal or cornmeal mush (grits.) She would get up sometimes at night and build a fire in the stove and sit next to it because she was having trouble breathing. She smoked -- rolled her own cigarettes made from Bull Durham or Dukes tobacco.They had an old Victrola that opened from the top.J. M. and Dester were pioneers in Mexico.

Sula, John's daughter, told Anita about the Mexico trip. Between 1902 and - 1906, John and Dester were part of the 2nd Blalock colony and went to Mexico to live.that the family went to Mexico originally because of the promise of free land. John would have been in his 40's at that time. (Juanita believes that her mother, Sula, was 11 years old when they lived in Mexico.) Evidently they were part of a group of people from the Altus, Okla. area who all moved at the same time due to the efforts of George Blalock, a former Sheriff of Pearce Co, Okla. This 2nd colony consisted of approximately 21 families. James Monroe and Maggie Hitt went also.The families went by train and took all their belongings and livestock including their two black mares, Maude and Suzy. John bought a large wooden container of longhorn cheese and a barrel of crackers and they ate them on the trip. They had to stop frequently and let the livestock graze. During these stops the women would try to do laundry or cook something (like beans or meat, if it became available) to be eaten after the train started up again. They were on the train one day less than a month.When they reached their destination they made houses of palm trunks on the bottom and woven palm leaves on top. The walls did not go all the way to the palm-leaf roof so birds could (and

did) fly in and out of the house at will. John and Dester had a 2-room house with a breezeway. They were across from the Blalock family. John filed for ownership of a banana farm in Charkalargo, Mexico. This area is now part of Mexico City. The family was there for 2 years. There was a post office and the children went to school in a frame house that had a palm leaf roof and a dirt floor. They played ball in the street and the Blalocks had a parrot that would call "foul ball." Maggie Allen Hitt had a dress that had tiny black buttons from neck to hem. The Blalock parrot would fly into the house and eat the buttons off of the dress every chance it got.The first Christmas they were there a bunch of the young people, including Roy Blalock, the son of the colony leader, went to Mexico City on horseback, a distance of 16 miles. During the ride Roy's pistol dropped from his belt and struck a rock and discharged. The bullet struck and killed him. After his death the parrot would call his name and seemed to cry. John and his family came back after two years due to the ill health of Dester and her Mother-in-law, Maggie Allen Hitt. and the Mexican RevolutionKen Harrison remembers one story that Granddaddy Hitt (John) told of walking down a dirt road and encountered a mountain lion.They had a stand-off until Granddaddy kicked sand in his face and shouted at him at the same time. The lion then ran away.Ken believes that they returned to the U.S. because they became fearful for their lives. The death of Will Brooks might have contributed to that feeling.
