Country Music: A Film by Ken Burns eight-part series SUN–WED Sep 15–18 and SUN–WED Sep 22–25 | 8pExplore the history of a uniquely American art form: country music. From its deep and tangled roots in ballads, blues and hymns performed in small settings, to its worldwide popularity, learn how country music evolved over the course of the 20th century. Directed by Ken Burns, the series focuses on the fascinating trailblazers who created and shaped country music, from the Carter Family and Bill Monroe to Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Garth Brooks and many more. Much like the music itself, this film tells unforgettable stories of hardships and joys shared by everyday people.

The Durrells in Corfu season 4 premieres SUN Sep 29 | 8p The future is looking bright for the Durrells, with all of the family channeling their heartbreak in different ways. Choosing to keep herself busy, Louisa has opened the doors of the villa as a guest house; but with Basil as their only paying guest, the business is still finding its feet. Struggling to get his risqué Black Book published, Larry is meanwhile enjoying the love of two ballet dancers. Heartbroken Leslie has thrown himself back into his job. Gerry has ambitious plans to open a zoo, with a new owl and some lemurs joining his menagerie. And Margo seeks a new challenge – starting her own beauty salon.

Poldark season 5 premieres SUN Sep 29 | 9pAidan Turner returns as the heroic Ross Poldark for a fifth and final season. It is a new century, and with it comes the promise of a hopeful future – but the past casts a long shadow over Cornwall. Following the death of Elizabeth, Ross resolves to put Westminster behind him and spend more time with the people he loves. When an old friend emerges with a plea for help, however, Ross is compelled to challenge the establishment once again. As the Enyses rally to join the cause, Demelza must contend with dangers close to home. Meanwhile, George Warleggan courts corrupt powers whose influence spans the Empire.

The Pushouts FRI Sep 20 | 11pThis documentary tells the story of celebrated professor and author Dr. Victor Rios, who, by 15, was a high school dropout and gang member with multiple felony convictions. But when a teacher’s quiet persistence, a mentor’s moral conviction and his best friend’s murder converged, Rios’ path took an unexpected turn. Now he’s paying it forward, working in L.A.’s Watts neighborhood to change the lives of students he calls “pushouts” instead of “dropouts.”

Adios Amor – The Search for Maria Moreno FRI Sep 27 | 11p The discovery of forgotten photographs prompts a search for Maria Moreno, an intrepid labor organizer in the years before Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta and United Farm Workers. A migrant worker with a gift for oratory, Maria rolled up her sleeves, collected signatures, electrified audiences and then … disappeared. Her story would have been lost if not for the photographers and journalists who chronicled the early stirrings of an American workers’ movement.

KCTS 9 Honors Hispanic Heritage Month ...Raúl Juliá: The World’s a Stage FRI Sep 13 | 10pThis film follows the actor’s journey from his native Puerto Rico to the creative hotbed of 1960s New York City, and on to prominence on Broadway and in Hollywood. Filled with passion, determination and joy, Juliá’s brilliant and daring career was tragically cut short by his untimely death at age 54. The film showcases his best-known performances, including breakout roles with Shakespeare in the Park, the Broadway musical Nine, and films such as Kiss of the Spider Woman, Presumed Innocent and The Addams Family.

Latino Americans series encore MON Sep 16 | 1–4p and MON Sep 23 | 1–4pThis landmark documentary series explores the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos, who have helped shape what is today the United States over the last 500-plus years. It is a story of people, politics and culture; of anguish and celebration; and of the gradual construction of a new American identity that connects and empowers millions of people today.

Mrs. Wilson miniseries encore SUN Sep 1 | 8–11pAt the outset of World War II, Alison McKelvie took a secretarial job with the Secret Intelligence Service. There, she fell in love with an older man, Major Alexander Wilson, a popular author of spy novels who was doing real intelligence work for the war effort. Little did Alison know, but she was entering a plot as tangled as one of the major’s mind-bending fictions. Ruth Wilson stars as her own grandmother Alison in the true story of a woman’s search for her husband’s real identity.

Farmsteaders SAT Sep 7 | 11pClear-eyed and intimate, Farmsteaders follows Nick Nolan and his young family on a journey to resurrect his late grandfather’s dairy farm as agriculture moves toward large-scale farming. A study of place and persistence, this film is an honest and tender look at everyday life in rural America, offering an unexpected voice for a forsaken people: those who grow the food that sustains us.

Grit SAT Sep 14 | 11pA multinational natural gas drilling company is believed to be responsible for the displacement of 60,000 people in an East Java village left submerged by a tsunami of mud. Fed up with the company’s delayed cleanup, Dian, a politically active teenager, galvanizes her neighbors to fight against the corporate powers accused of one of the largest environmental disasters in recent history.

The Feud: American Experience

TUE Sep 10 | 9pThis film explores the infamous Hatfield-McCoy feud involving two

families who lived along the border between West Virginia and Kentucky in the second half of the 19th century. Their violent feud lasted nearly 30 years and became the stuff of legend. But the real

story behind the feud is fascinating and complex, a reflection of the massive social changes that were occurring as America was moving

from an agricultural to industrial economy.photo courtesy of carnival film & television limited

KCTS 9 honors Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) with two special programs …

Trezoros: The Lost Jews of Kastoria MON Sep 30 | 1pThis documentary chronicles life in the picturesque town of Kastoria, where Jews and Christians lived in harmony and friendship for over 2,000 years. The film takes us on a journey from the joyful innocence of the pre-war years through the heartbreaking struggles of the Holocaust. The poignant story honors the memory of the once-vibrant community and reminds us of the enduring spirit of the people who survived the horrors of the war.

Jewish Film Showcase: Raise the Roof MON Sep 30 | 2:30pRivaling the greatest wooden architecture in history, the synagogues of 18th-century Poland – the last of which were destroyed by the Nazis – inspired artists Rick and Laura Brown to embark on a 10-year pursuit to reconstruct the elaborate roof and painted ceiling of the GwoŸdziec synagogue. Created with the aid of a team of 300 artisans and students, the showstopping building was realized and installed as the centerpiece of the new Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw. This beautifully filmed program chronicles their ambitious project.
