As we wake-up in the morning to crisp air, we realize that summer is soon becoming a distant memory. We are very excited for the upcoming school year and the opportunity to work in partnership with families to support all of our students. With the start of the new school year we would like to inform you of some staffing changes that took place over the summer. We welcome Ms. Jordan Haran to Liberty as our Media Specialist, Mrs. Jennifer Johnson as our English Language Educator who will be working with Ms. Karen Baho, and Mrs. Sofiya Padela as a Paraeducator. Although not new to our staff, we welcome the following people to new teaching positions: Ms. Reid has joined the third grade team, Mr. Kneipfer joined the fourth grade team, and Ms. Flint has joined the fifth grade team. It was exciting to begin our year with our new Open House format. I know that all of us here at Liberty were so happy to meet families before the official start, and we hope this change made everyone feel comfortable and relaxed as that first bell rang on our first day together. Each month we will come together as a school to celebrate our achievements as we take on a monthly focus that connects to our expectations. To wrap up our first week we came together as a whole school for our first assembly. During our time together we introduced our school-wide expectation: Be Kind, Be Safe, Be Your Best! The focus for September is Responsibility . As a school we discussed that being responsible means you are able to be trusted to do what is right and to do the things that are expected. We encourage families to discuss our monthly focus with students as we embark on this endeavor together. All 4th Grade students are required to have a current physical on file in the Health Office by September 2017. If you have not done so already, please forward your child’s physical to Mrs. Kelly ASAP.

Please remember that no student should transport medication of any kind (including over the counter medications) to school. All medications should be hand carried to the nurse by a responsible adult.

Remember to keep your child home from school if he or she is ill with a fever of 100 degrees or greater, has diarrhea and/ or vomiting, or has any other contagious illness. The child is not allowed to return to school after a febrile illness until fever free for 24 hours without the use of Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

Vision and hearing screenings and height and weight assessments will begin in September for all students. Note: Only those students in grades K-3 will receive hearing screenings now. I will only notify those parents of students who fail these screenings.

Don’t forget to send your child to school with a healthy snack every day!

In consideration for the safety of our many students with various food allergies, please:

be aware that Liberty School no longer allows food to be used in conjunction with classroom celebrations.

review with your child the importance of our “no food sharing” rule for all students. know that there is an Allergy Aware Table in the cafeteria for students whose parents

chose for them to sit there. If space permits, your child may bring a friend to sit there as long as their lunch is also allergen-free.

OUR BELIEFS

Since excellence in instruction and student achievement is our primary objective, we are committed to the following beliefs:

Students should acquire a rigorous core of knowledge by thinking critically and creatively and

making wise judgments in an inclusive environment that promotes higher level thinking skills

across the curriculum.

All students can achieve academic proficiency and strive for excellence.

All students possess unique talents and gifts and should be encouraged to reach their maximum

potential.

Students should be able to collaborate and communicate effectively through reading, writing,

speaking, problem solving, the arts, and technology.

Students should acquire the knowledge, skills, and motivation necessary to achieve and maintain

optimum health and lifelong wellness.

Students should develop a sense of self-discipline, self-respect, and self-reliance and demonstrate

social, civic, and environmental responsibility.

Students should acquire skills to adapt to an evolving and technologically advancing society.

Students should understand, respect, and appreciate the racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity of our

society and the democratic principles upon which this nation was built.

A safe and orderly environment, free of prejudice, drugs, violence, bullying, hazing and

harassment of any kind, is essential to promote student learning.

Ongoing opportunities for the professional growth and development of staff are essential for

improving teaching and learning.

Parents, guardians, and caregivers, in partnership with schools, are an integral part of their child’s

learning.

Community involvement should be actively solicited, encouraged, and developed.
