I t was 1945, the war over, and America was riding a wave of optimism. John

Entenza, publisher of the influential Arts & Architecture magazine conceived the Case Study House Program, which would seek to match cutting edge architects, such as Richard Neutra, Pierre Koenig, Charles & Ray Eames, Craig Ellwood and Raphael Soriano with like-minded, forward-seeking

clients to design and build homes that would showcase what modernism could offer the general public. The program would feature innovative designs by using low cost, readily available building materials and emphasize blurring the distinction between indoor/outdoor living. As the result of technology developed during the war, steel became usable for residential construction, which allowed for Koenig’s CSH #22 and the Eames’s own home CSH #8 to be built. By the late 1950s these innovative designs were refined by the tastes of buyers, leading to expansive elegant spaces clad in richer materials, as in Killingsworth, Brady & Smith’s CSH #23. Despite the post war building boom, modernism didn’t resonate with the masses. Although limited to a couple dozen houses, the Case Study Program was able to achieve some of the best examples of modern architecture today. While some of the designs were never executed and others strayed from the architect’s original vision, they would become enduring, world-renowned design icons. Interior designer Kathryn Waltzer resides in a Case Study House.
