While the Le governs only formally, a feudal war tempers between the Trinh from the Thang Long and the Nguyen from the Hue.

Jesuit Alexandres de Rhodes publishes in Roma a Latin Vietnamese catechism, and creates the Ngoc Ngu, the roman-based script currently used for Vietnamese.

Nguyen Anh changes his name to Gia Long and starts the Nguyen dynasty.

President Kennedy increases US military aid to South Vietnam

1965 First US ground combat unit in Vietnam - 9th

Marine Regiment went ashore in South Vietnam to protect the large airfield at Da Nang.

1969 Ho Chi Minh dies. President Nixon begins to

reduce US ground troops in Vietnam as domestic public opposition to the war grows.

1979 Vietnamese troops enter Phnom Penh and

end the brutal Pol Pot plan in Cambodia.
