VHS Homecoming candidates selectedJessica Buchan Maranda Chance Cassidy Stout Desiree Walter

Jessica Buchan is the 17 year old daughter of Patrick Buchan and Amie Ingersoll. Since Jessica has no biological siblings, she considers her closest friends to be her brothers and sisters.

Jessica participates in Art Club and does art activities with the Life Skills class regularly. Although Jessica did not grow up in this area, she said, “Moving to Vienna has been a great experience, because of the awesome teachers and students at VHS.”

Jessica’s favorite part of Homecoming week is all the time out of class and being able to “act a fool.” (continued on page 13)

Maranda Chance is the 17 year old daughter of Marty and Kindra Chance. Maranda has one sister, Taylor Chance, who is a sophomore at VHS.

Maranda participates in FFA, HOSA, basketball, volleyball, and softball. She is also a part of the nursing program, Student Council, and Pep Club.

At VHS, Maranda’s favorite memory is the teasing and trouble Mr. Hill caused her freshman year. Every year, Maranda looks forward to all the dress days, and more importantly, the lip syncs during Homecoming week. (continued on page 13)

Cassidy Stout is the 18 year old daughter of Warren and Brandi Stout. Cassidy’s brother, Adrian, attends New Simpson Hill grade school.

Cassidy is a member of the basketball, softball, and volleyball teams. She also is a member of Beta Club, Pep Club, and FFA. Cassidy’s favorite memory at VHS is winning the lip syncs her junior year. Besides the lip syncs, her favorite part of Homecoming week is seeing everyone’s hard work coming together, and all the trash talking.

Desiree Walter is 17 the year old daughter of Doug and Julie Walter. Desiree has two sisters, Heather Walter and Amanda Obourn.

Desiree is a member of Beta Club, Student Council, Drama Club, Scholar Bowl, Nursing, Prom Committee, and Pep Club. She is also a member of the basketball, track, dance, and golf teams.

Desiree’s favorite memories of VHS have been all the Beta conventions and Homecoming weeks. Her favorite part of Homecoming week is always the lip syncs. After graduating, Desiree wants to finish her Associates Degree (continued on page 13)

Christian Dahncke Lucas Hogan Nicholas Myers Justin Tanner

Christian Dahncke is the 18 year old son of Mark and Tiffany Dahncke. Christian has three brothers, Nolan, Brendan, and Ian Dahncke.

Christian plays football and baseball and is a member of Pep Club. Christian’s favorite memory of high school is all the shenanigans that occurred in Mrs. Guest’s class sophomore and junior year.

Christian’s favorite part of Homecoming week is, without a doubt, the lip syncs and watching people make fools of themselves. After high school, Christian (continued on page 13)

Lucas Hogan is the 18 year old son of John and Kim Hogan. Luke has two brothers, Matt and Reed Hogan.

Luke participates in all of the Pep Club’s activities. Luke said his favorite memory at VHS is the snowball fight that happened at lunch one day.

During Homecoming week, Luke’s favorite activity is the lip syncs. “Seeing everyone dress up and listening to all of the smack talk makes everything more interesting at school,” Luke commented.

Justin Tanner is the 18 year old son of Garry and Denise Tanner. Justin only has one brother, Brandon, but wants to mention his two dogs, Sparky and Roscoe.

Justin participates in Pep Club, FCCLA, baseball, football, FFA, and Beta Club. Justin’s best memories from high school come from all the crazy Beta Club conventions.

The lip syncs are Justin’s favorite part of Homecoming week and he wants everybody to know that the seniors are the “Kings of Swag”. (continued on page 13)

Nicholas Myers is the 18 year old son of David and Connie Folsom. Nick has two brothers, Joe Myers and Matt Bius.

Nick has participated in Beta Club, golf, and has been on the Student Council for two years.

His best memories, he says, has come from the Beta conventions. The lips syncs are his favorite part of Homecoming week, especially listening to the crowd’s reaction to different songs and outfits.

Nick’s plans for after high school include finding an education in a computer field and either finding a career (continued on page 13)

Becky, 16, is the daughter of Mike and Mona Reeder. She has an older brother, Ryan, 26, and a twin brother, Randy, 16. At VHS, Becky is a member of the basketball, volleyball, and softball teams. She is also a member of YFC, FFA, HOSA, and Student Council. Becky enjoys playing basketball and volleyball. She also likes hanging out with friends and riding four-wheelers. Becky’s favorite part of Homecoming Week is the skits, because she loves seeing all the compitition, and watching how crazy people can be. Becky has a wonderful cousin, Jarrod Wiggs, who is always there for her. She also has an obsession with Yadier Molina. Becky wants to thank everyone who voted for her, and said she feels very honored to represent her class.

Tom, 16, is the son of David and Crsytal Meier.

At VHS, Tom is a member of the basketball and football teams, and is in Pep Club.

Tom enjoys playing the guitar, and playing basketball and football in his free time.

Tom’s favorite part of Homecoming Week is lip syncs, because he likes watching his classmates pretend to sing and act crazy.

Tom says he likes things that people usually don’t like. He describes himself as “unique.”

Tom would like to thank everyone who voted for him to represent his class, and said he is excited to participate in Homecoming Week.

He also said he wants to thank the junior class for doing a good job on choosing the “best of the best.”

Mikalah Greer

Tylour, 17, is the son of Dennis and Mary Daubert. He has a twin sister, Taylour, and a younger sister Suhmer.

At VHS, Tylour is a member of the baseball team and plays on the football team. He is the Vice President of FFA, and also serves as the Vice President of the junior class.

Tylour enjoys hanging out with his friends, playing baseball, working out, and playing with his cat Charlie.

Tylour’s favorite part of Homecoming Week is the complete edge and rush that everyone gets during Homecoming, especially when the juniors feel the rush of winning and dominating.

Tylour loves Ke$ha. He has lived in Scott AFB, Japan, Germany, and New Jersey.

Tylour said he feels very honored, yet surprised that he was chosen as attendant. He is proud to support the junior class. #swagnation

Mikalah, 16, is the daughter of Brenda and Norman Suits, and Roger Greer. She has a younger sister, Lily Greer, and a step sister Arial Suits.

At VHS, Mikalah is in band. She is also a member of YFC, Pep Club and Beta Club.

Mikalah likes to read, watch Disney movies, and hang out with her friends.

Mikalah’s favorite part of Homecoming is getting to dress as crazy as possible all week long.

One of Mikalah’s hobbies is to collect masquerade masks.

Mikalah said she feels absolutely honored and thrilled, and a little shocked that she was chosen as an attendant. She wants to thank the junior class for electing her.

Mikalah said, “I would like to give a shout out to Melanie Browning and Sabrina Hinkle! I love you girls!’’

Audra, 16, is the daughter of Brent Bullock, and Elizabeth Taylor. She has a younger sister, Adrienne, and a brother Aidan Kuhn.

At VHS, Audra plays basketball, golf, and softball, and is in FFA, and Pep Club.

Audra loves being outside, drawing and listening to music.

Audra’s favorite part of Homecoming Week is lip syncs, because she likes to watch her classmates pretend to sing and dance.

Audra secretly loves rock music, and is obsessed with it.

Audra said she is really excited and grateful that she gets to participate in Homecoming this year, and hopes to represent her class well!

Natalie, 15, is the daughter of Cessinee and Jack Thorton. She has an older sister, Knikki, and two younger sisters, Abby and Haleigh. She also has a younger brother, Walker.

At VHS, Natalie plays basketball, and is in Beta Club and Pep Club.

Natalie likes playing basketball, softball, and hanging out with friends.

Natalie’s favorite part of Homecoming Week is the skits, because she likes getting out of class early. She also likes the activities and competition.

Natalie wants to thank everyone who voted for her. “It is greatly appreciated,” she said.

Parker, 16, is the son of D.R. and Amy Agin. He has a younger sister, Emilie.

At VHS, Parker is a member of the football team, American Trap Shooters Association, and FFA.

Parker likes to ride horses and shoot guns.

Parker can do a Mickey Mouse voice, and has a full on beard.

Parker’s favorite part of Homecoming Week is the lip syncs because he says its fun being able to dress up goofy and perform in front of the whole school.

Parker wants to thank everyone who voted for him to represent his class. “I feel very honored,” he said. Parker said he also thinks the only reason that he was picked by his class is because they wanted to see him in a tux.

Jarrod, 16, is the son of Ken and Heidi Wiggs. He has an older sister Erica Miller, and a younger sister Katelyn.

At VHS, Jarrod is a member of the basketball and baseball teams. He is also a member of Student Council.

Jarrod likes playing basketball and baseball. He also likes playing Call of Duty.

Jarrod’s favorite part of Homecoming Week is lip syncs, because he said he loves watching everyone getting into it.

Jarrod has an awesome cousin named Becky Reeder who he says is the best!

Adrienne, 15, is the daughter of Brent Bullock and Elizabeth Taylor. She has a older sister, Audra Bullock, and a younger brother Aidan Kuhn. During high school, Adrienne has participated in Pep Club and Beta Club. In Adrienne’s free time she enjoys hanging out with Lakin and riding four wheelers. She also enjoys participating in softball, basketball, and spirit squad. Adrienne’s favorite part of Homecoming is lip syncs. She said, “I’ve never actually participated in Homecoming week considering I’m a freshman, but it looks fun!” When asked how she felt about being selected as a Freshman Homecoming attendant, Adrienne said, “I appreciate everyone who chose me to represent the freshman class.”

Wyatt, 14, is the son of Donnie and Kathy Graves. He is the brother of Dylan Graves.

During high school, Wyatt has participated in FFA.

In Wyatt’s freetime he enjoys running, playing the saxophone, listening to music and painting. He also enjoys participating in golf.

Wyatt said his favorite part of Homecoming is lipsyncs.

When asked how he felt about being selected as a Freshman Homecoming attendant, he said, “It means a lot that people had the whole freshman class to choose from, and they chose me.”

Max, 14, is the son of David and Patty Allbritten. He has an older sister, Allison. During high school, Max has participated in FFA, Student Council, and Beta Club. In Max’s free time he enjoys deer hunting, playing golf, and traveling. He also enjoys participating in golf. A unique fact about Max is that his celebrity crush is Oprah. Max said his favorite part of Homecoming is lip syncs because he likes to entertain people. When asked how he felt about being selected as a Freshman Homecoming attendant, he said, “I feel honored to be chosen out of the entire freshman class.”

Six VHS students have been named Illinois State Scholars and seven were Prairie State Achievement Exam (PSAE) honorees. Illinois State Scholars are Alyssa Ferguson, Shane Cowsert, Avery Kerley, Asthon Loyd, Nick Myers, and Lucas Wright. They, along with Noah Bain, were also PSAE honorees. The Illinois State Scholars program recognizes students with outstanding academic records. To be eligible, a student must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of Illinois, attend an approved high school, and have taken the ACT, SAT, or Prairie State Achievement Exam. One also has to score in the 95th percentile in those tests. Only the top ten percent of student graduates are declared Illinois State Scholars. Illinois State Scholars receive honorary and academic recognition,

but no financial reward. These students are also Prairie State Achievement Exam winners. Prairie State Achievement Exam winners must have exceeded expectations in one or more specific subject categories. A student can be a State Scholar and a PSAE winner. A student can also recieve recognition in one or the other. When asked about what their plans are for the future, the Scholars had interesting answers. Nick Meyers said, “I want to complete my Associate of Science at SCC, and then move on to a four year college. My hope is to major in computers and maybe find a job in education.” Ashton Loyd answered, “I plan to continue my education in college, although I’m not sure which one. I’m going to get my Masters in Business Administration. Hopefully one day

After years of hard work and dedication, VHS teacher Mr. John Giffin has earned his National Teacher’s Board Certification. National Teacher’s Board Certification is a certificate granted to teachers after their work has been assessed and they have been determined to meet the National Board’s standards.

Earning a certificate from the National Board is a voluntary process, but it is no easy task as the teacher will be assessed on the highest possible standards.

Teachers that are National Board Certified are required to show advanced teaching knowledge, skills, and practices.

Working towards a goal such as this requires a lot of determination and dedication. Mr. Giffin said, “Working towards your National Teacher’s Board

I will be successful at owning and operating my own business.” Lucas Wright said, “I plan on going to the University of Illinois and majoring in broadcast journalism. From there I hope to make it to a broadcast team and hopefully work my way up to ESPN.” Alyssa Ferguson replied, “After high school, I will be attending Mississippi University where I will pursue my Bachelors degree. I intend to major in speech pathology and become a speech therapist.” Avery Kerley answered, “After high school, I intend to enter a Pre-law program at either Southern Illinois University or DePaul University, depending on currently outstanding applications.” Shane Cowsert said, “After high school, I plan on attending the University of Illinois where I will obtain a degree in mechanical engineering. After I graduate I

Certification is a sacrifice. You have to spend a lot of time and work for it, but it’s worth it.”

Mr. Giffin spent three years devoting a lot of effort into accomplishing this certification. He said, “It took a long time and it was a lot of work. I’m glad to be done with that, but I’m really excited to have passed.”

Other teachers may also strive to receive this certification, although it’s not required. Mr. Giffin said, “You don’t have to go through this to be a good teacher, but I do encourage all that are interested to try. It’s a good opportunity for all teachers. I wanted to go through with it because I wanted to use the best practices possible and improve my skills. The award just let’s me know that what I’m doing is meaningful.”

Mr. Newbold helps band students march their way through lifeBy Brianna Sori

VHS Band teacher, Dustin Newbold, helped his band students rock their way into the new year at their annual Christmas Concert that took place on December 19.

The much anticipated Christmas Concert was a total success and everyone had a blast!

VHS Junior, Mikalah Greer said, “I always love playing at the

Christmas Concert because it gives us an oppurtunity as a band to play great, cheerful music.”

This was the first time that Mr. Newbold accompanied the band by playing his guitar.

Mr. Newbold said, “I really enjoyed playing with the band and I am hoping to do it more often.”

Here at Vienna High School a group of our students partcipate in an annual Special Olympic meet against the rest of the district. Our entire Life Skills class takes pride in prepping for their competitions.

Four VHS students won medals at the event. Kala Shaneyfelt, who won a bronze medal, Kaydee Parini and Gary Henson , who both won silver medals, and Maleia Evans, who won a gold medal.

The Special Olympics were held on October 4th at the Herrin Christian Church, and were focused on Volleyball. There were 38 attendees, although not all actually participated.

Depending on age or gender, three to seven kids take part in the group event. During the events, the kids taking part are graded on over

hand passes, underhand passes, demonstration of their ability to serve, and how far the the ball is in bounds.

The Life Skills teachers and assistants are very proud of their students and the support the school and community are giving. “The kids are working very hard and are enjoying every minute as they prepare for each event,” said Life Skills teacher, Mrs. Hunsaker with a wide smile.

Mrs. Hunsaker also mentioned, “It is great to see how much interest in Special Olympics there is this year.”

The next event the Life Skills class will compete in is the Track and Field Special Olympics in April, so as the Life Skills continue on with their meets, make sure to keep supporting our Special Olympics team!

Students wrap up 2013 by giving back to the communityBy Megan Chruszczyk

Mrs. Trover’s class gave back to the community this holiday season by donating presents to 15 individuals.

The class of only six students raised a grand total of $1,754 from donations made by local businesses. The class set up donation cans and the students individually helped out in collecting the money.

The 15 people to whom they donated gifts weren’t the only ones who were given something from this experience. The students who donated the presents were given personal fulfillment.

The class members said that they could connect with the individuals they donated to because they can personally relate to how those people must feel.

The students said they felt really

excited about being able to have this experience and appreciated getting the opportunity to help.

“I enjoyed brightening a kid’s day and felt I had really done something good. I will never forget the look on

their faces when they saw all of the presents,” Junior Isaac Vaughn stated.

He added, “We couldn’t have done it without the help and support of the community and all of the hard work the class put into this cause.”

The class felt it was good to get out of the classroom and see the community. They also feel that VHS should participate in more acts of helping out in the community.

band, he also teaches Pep Band, Marching Band, and Guitar. “I really have a passion for music, and I look forward to helping kids learn to love music as I do,” Mr. Newbold stated.

The VHS band has two concerts every year. The next one will occur in the Spring. Mr. Newbold said, “The Spring Concert is always my favorite because it has a nice variety

of complex music and we have a lot of time to prepare for it.”

Marching Band and Pep Band have been very active this year as well. They participate by playing at games to support our VHS teams, and by performing and marching in parades.

Lady Eag les soar the ir way in to 2014By Cassidy Stout The Lady Eagles kicked off their 2013-2014 season November 18 with the annual Marion invitational tournament. They started the tournament in a positive way with a 64-46 win over Marion. Maranda Chance supplied the Lady Eagles with 23 points in addition to Cassidy Stout’s 14 points. The following night, Vienna put up a fight against Carterville but came up short, losing 47-59. Thursday night ended in a loss to Herrin, and the tournament ended Saturday after Vienna’s loss to Benton. The Massac County Patriots traveled to Vienna on December 2 to start the regular season. After a tough game, the Lady Eagles came out with a loss. On December 12, the Lady Eagles ventured to Cobden and came out on top. The first Conference game was played on December 14 against the Fairfield Lady Mules. The Lady Eagles came out victorious, resulting in a 1-0 record to kick off the Conference. “We did really well against Fairfield. I’m anxious to see how we do in the rest of the conference games,” said senior Jami Shipley. This is her third year playing basketball at VHS. In the following week, the team played two more conference games, resulting in two losses against Johnston City and Hamilton County. Vienna Eagles hoops team takes flight into 2014By Trevon Crittendon On November 25th through the 30th, Vienna High School hosted the 15th annual Vienna Classic Tournament. The Eagles came in 3rd place beating the Carrier Mills Wildcats and the Centruy Centurions, while losing to the Massac County Patriots and the Meridian Bobcats. Vienna’s starting sophomore center, Zachryn Moore, made the All-Tourney team with an impressive 31 point game against the Carrier Mills Wildcats. The Eagles played the Cobden Apple Knockers on December 28th and won by a 12 point margin. The final score was 70-58, and once again sophomore Zachryn Moore had an outstanding game with 20 points. On December 17th, the Eagles secured an impressive win against the Pope County Pirates. The final score was 62-18, and sophomore Jarrod Wiggs added to the win with five 3-pointers, coming close to the

school record of eight 3-pointers in a game. The Eagles played Hamilton

Holiday Hoops tournament took place, where the Lady Eagles played a total of five games. At the end of the tournament, Vienna had two wins and three losses. During the tournament, senior Maranda Chance obtained 1,000 points. She was presented with a basketball with her name written on it during one of the games. On January 11, the girls played Carmi White County and came out victorious. They will begin playing in the Eldorado Lady Eagle Classic on January 20. Come out and support your Lady Eagles! VHS senior Avery Kerley is showcasing his musical talent at the Kentucky Governor’s School for Arts (GSA). The school hosted an event at the Etcetera Coffee House in Paducah, Kentucky on November 23. Avery was one of the local students asked to play with them. Local musicians were asked to play different songs for the event. Local drama students read poetry and short stories throughout the event. Avery played his guitar at the event. “I have been playing the guitar since I was 5 years old. I love it,” says Avery. The Kentucky GSA is a three

week program for students with artistic and musical interests. Dancers, actors, art students, and creative writers are among some of the types of students that attend. “I had an awesome time at the coffee house event. It was amazing, almost as amazing as Batman,” says Avery. At the event, Avery played three songs; “Classical Gas” by Mason Williams, “Time of Your Life” by Green Day, and a traditional “Spanish Malengueño”. Avery plays the cello and the guitar. Avery hopes to continue working with the Kentucky GSA and participate in more of

Student goes above and beyond to help others From community service at home to communities beyond, VHS Senior Emily Harris spends much of her time volunteering to help others. One place Emily volunteers at is Hillview Nursing Home. She said she really enjoys making others happy and she wants to touch their lives. Emily said, “There is no greater feeling then knowing you’re making a positive difference in other people lives.” Emily said she loves putting

smiles on the residents’ faces, as she paints their nails, plays board games with them, and listens to what they have to say. After high school, Emily plans to attend Shawnee Community College to study Cosmetology and in time, open her own salon. During the holiday season Emily decided to give soldiers that are away from home for the holidays a Christmas card to make them feel they are loved and remembered. The cards were sent to Capitol

Heights, Maryland where they are then shipped to our very own Heroes for the holidays. “I thought it was a really fun idea and it would be nice seeing as the time of year to give back,” said Emily of the experience. Emily plans to get involved in more volunteer service soon. Emily plans on continuing volunteering after high school. “Volunteering helps me keep going; it brings me too much joy to not do it,” she said.

Several students at VHS displayed their Eagle Spirit by utilizing their voices at home basketball and volleyball games.

The “Voice of the Eagles” are students who announce the line ups, what positions the players play, and the coaches and referees during volleyball and basketball seasons.

Tryouts are held early in the school year and are open to any VHS student who wants to try out for the Voice of the Eagles and to sing the national anthem.

Pep Club kicks off the year with a bangBy Dylan Graves VHS started off the year with a bang, starting with the Marion Invitional Tournament which was held Nov. 18-23. The Pep Club was at every game supporting their Lady Eagles as they battled their way through the tournament. The Pep Club did various things on different nights such as, camo night, spirit night, and swag night. Pep Club advisor Mrs. Palmer said, “I am very pleased with the way the students are coming out and supporting all the athletics this year”. The next event that was a big

hit for the VHS Pep Club was the Turkey Tourney hosted by VHS. The Pep Club once again showed their dominance over everyone else, showing their support for their soaring Eagles. The members did a variety of dress-ups again to help support their Eagles. They consisted of camo night, swag night, old geezer night, and spirit night. Pep club member Justin Tanner said, “My favorite night was dressing up as old people. I thought the whole tournament was a good turn-out for the Pep club to

show off their school spirit.” The Pep club this year has already had a huge turn out at both the girls and the boys tournaments. “Our Pep Club is great every year and I’m very proud of our students that come to support their school,” said Mrs. Palmer. The Pep Club is looking forward to the games and tournaments, and helping to support their Vienna Eagles, including during the upcoming Eldorado tournament. Pep club member Trevon Crittendon stated, “I am pumped to go up and support all our girls at the Eldorado Tournament this year.” The Eagles Mascot suits up to cheer on

Scholar Bowl starts of the year undefeated Vienna Scholar Bowl has started the year off great as they are undefeated after their first two matches of the season! They plan to continue their win streak as they head to the mid-way point of the season. Scholar Bowl is an expanding sport that grows bigger and bigger each year here at VHS, coached by Vienna’s very own Mr. Giffin, who also teaches Physical Science, Chemistry, Physics, and a college level class BIO 115. Mr. Giffin explains, “Scholar Bowl is a competition where two teams from different schools answer questions on topics such as Math, Science, Literature, and History. When a team answers a question correctly they score points, and whoever has the most points after 24 questions wins the match.” Mr. Giffin has been the Scholar

Bowl coach here at Vienna for 10 years. He said that each year gets better and better as more kids join

the team. The VHS Scholar Bowl team has beat the Goreville Blackcats at home

and beat the Century Centurions by forfeit due to a lack of players by Century.

I recently had a chance to sit down with the VHS Scholar Bowl Captain Shane Cowsert. Here is what he had to say. D.W.-What is your role on the team as captain? S.C.- The team looks up to me in times of need and I lead them to

the best of my ability. Actually I’m just the guy who sits in the middle. D.W.- What are your expectations for the rest of this year? S.C- The team shall claim glory upon the defeats of our foes. We will bring honor and glory to the whole school when we take victory. We will not back down, we

will not go quietly into the night. D.W.- How many people make up a Scholar Bowl team. S.C.- The team consists of five battle hardened Scholars and a plethora of equally impressive alternates. Each one has the reflexes of a cheetah, and the velocity of a shark with

the intelligence to rival Einstein himself. They have never known defeat and they never plan to. D.W.- What do you hope to improve on this year? S.C.- I would like to obliterate our opponents to where they never want to face us again.

Vienna High School Sophomore Taylor Bundren, was recently a guest speaker at a local rekindling held at Vienna First Methodist Church.

Taylor has been asked to speak at several events, the most recent being the Rekindling Service.

Taylor spoke for thirty minutes about faith in God and gave many references from the Bible, herself, and others who have walked with Christ. She even quoted Drew Brees,

The “Rekindle the Fire” service was organized by Alan Milligan of Eagle House Ministries. It is a non-denominational service made of up of various youth groups in Southern Illinois. Each church takes turns hosting the service for local area youth groups.

VHS students make worshiping a hobbyBy Taylor Bundren VHS Junior Shelby Linaweaver and Freshman Alysha Mott make up half of their band, Crossover. Shelby and Alysha both attend Simpson Baptist Church, and their pastor, David Michael Webb, helped them start the band. At first, Shelby and Alysha were the only members, but soon after they decided to add more instruments. The newer additions, Derrick Linaweaver and Miranda Mathis, add drums and bass guitar to the sound. Both Derrick and Miranda will be VHS freshmen next year. Derrick Linaweaver came up with their band name to represent to transition of sinners crossing over into new bodies of Christ. Crossover has played at Rekindlings, youth rallies, and also at the 2013 Stonefort Reunion. Crossover is also scheduled to play

at Awakening the Spirit Youth Rally hosted at VHS. Band member Shelby said, “Being in Crossover is a lot of work, but I love to take my mind off the world. It’s amazing to have the opportunity to worship and lead others through the music to God.” Freshman Alysha Mott said, “Crossover is an amazing opportunity to share God’s love with others. I can worship with all my brothers and sisters in Christ. God uses me to bring glory to Him through music. God also uses Crossover to show me things about myself as well. I pray that Christ continues to use me through music!” Crossover looks forward to continuing their music for many years to come. Junior Eagle spirit member practicing a lift

VHS students and teacher spread Christ’s love through missions Fellowship Baptist Church of Vienna organized a mission trip down to Clay City, Kentucky, on October 11 through October 14. They delivered Love Bundles and clothes to the ministry Children’s Lifeline to be shipped to Haiti. Ten VHS students went with the church: Natalie Chambless, Rachael Ren, Nellda Stevers, Sarah Allen, Kathryn Jones, McKenzie Smith, Meighan Smith, Julie Allen, Tia McLaughlin, and Tara McLaughlin. Mr. Stafford was one of the leaders that orchestrated the whole event. The mission team delivered Haiti Love Bundles and clothes that were sent from Fellowship Baptist. They also organized Love Bundles from across the country in the Lifeline warehouse on Saturday and Sunday. When the clothes and Bundles were more organized, they were piled onto large pallets to be sent to Haiti, along with medical supplies. Freshman McKenzie Smith loved going on the trip. She said, “My favorite part was organizing the Love Bundles because I knew that what I was holding would

make the people in Haiti happy. I also loved hearing a devotion that talked about how the only good works you can do is when your heart is centered on Christ.” Friday the team drove the six hours to Clay City. On Saturday they worked at the warehouse for about four hours, then went out in their free time to the Suspension Bridge. On Sunday the group worked at the warehouse again. After that, the group went to Natural Bridge Skylift. They rode up on a lift to the top of Pine Mountain on the sky lift and then picnicked. Monday was the missions team’s last day in Clay City. The group went to the Lost River, an underground river attraction, and then headed home. Saturday through Monday, the group listened to five different devotional talks that inspired them and reminded them all about where the focus really is: on Christ. Sophomore Natalie Chambless said, “I loved hearing all of the devotions, and I was really encouraged by all of the different talks. It was a really inspiring trip.”

Jessica has no idea what she wants to do after high school but hopes to have a career helping the disabled.

When asked about how she felt about being chosen to be a part of the Homecoming court, Jessica said “Well, I don’t want to wear a dress... but I was shocked! I didn’t know I had any chance so I didn’t know how to respond. Now that I think about it, the opportunity is really cool.”

Jessica’s hobbies are eating, sleeping, and partying. Okay, not really the partying. Jessica says she isn’t very sociable outside of school but she enjoys hiking and playing ping pong. One thing people might not know about Jessica is that she taught her dog Isis to untie her shoes for her.

After high school, Maranda plans on playing basketball and softball at SIC while participating in the nursing program.

Maranda said she feels incredibly honored and is very excited to be a part of the Homecoming court.

Outside of school, Maranda enjoys time with friends, playing basketball, and playing softball.

Maranda’s deepest darkest secret is that she is terribly afraid of crickets!
