The Videre is a medium format pinhole
camera which is available as a kit through
Kickstarter. To find it search for ‘The Pop-
Up Pinhole Project’.
The funding this project ends on 18th May
2013, so if you are interested please make
sure you pledge before then! You can own
your own Videre kit for £30 and if you’re
not the making type I’ll put one together
for you and load a film so it’s ready to
shoot as soon as it lands on your doorstep
for £150.
Over the past few weeks I have been shooting
pinhole portraits with the Videre of thepeople around me who have encouraged and
inspired me to put this project together.
This document collates all of the portraits
alongside an exclusive interview with each
sitter so you can find out a little more
about them.

Becks Parnell
Researcher for the BBC.
What was your first camera?
My first camera was actually an OM10 from
my Grandad, but it sat on my shelf as an
ornament for years before I actually used
it. The first camera I used and got a film
developed from was a little compact Olympus
point and shoot.
What is your favourite photo?
One of my Grandad smiling with his horse.
He was photographed for a book thatdemonstrated to the Calvary men how to ride
a horse properly and this was a shot the
professional photographer took for him to
keep that wasn’t for the book.
When I was a child I wanted to be...
either a Pilot or a Dancer.

Britta B
Fashion Editor at Cooler Magazine.
Has photography inspired your work?
It’s part of what I do, so yes.
What was the last photo you took?
My last picture was of a Barbapapas (my
favourite kid’s TV show) rocking horse in
a shop window on my iphone. the last film
picture I took on a proper camera was part
of a Fred Perry shoot for Indie mag.
A book that changed me was...
I studied literature and have read so many
books that I’ve become a bit immune to their
power to change people, but the books that
impressed me most are probably the Rabbit
tetralogie by John Updike.

Bronwyn Opland
Set Designer & Maker.
Digital or analogue?
I have always had film cameras, even when
everyone went digital. To me the results are
always worth the time, effort and money.
What’s the first camera you owned?
My Dad bought me a really simple old 35mm
camera from a car boot sale when I was about
6. I can’t remember the make or model but
I do remember it having an extra wide angle
mode!
What was the last photo you took?
I instagrammed a photo of my awesome shoes
this morning. The last photo I took with a
proper camera was on New Years day on a walk
with friends on my old Olympus OM10.

Claude d’Avoine
Designer at Dazed & Confused.
Who or what inspires you the most?
my mum! She has always encouraged me and my sisters
to look at the world differently and stressed the
importance of all forms of art by taking us to
exhibitions constantly. I think this early exposureto so much made me far more aware of everything
around me and in turn put me on the path to become a
designer.
Can you describe your favourite photograph?
Since working for Dazed I have been exposed to some
of the most exciting editorial photography around.
One of my favourite photographs was the cover of
our Art Special which featured Iris Apfel. It was
shot by Jeff Bark and styled by Robbie Spencer. I
absolutely love the shot. The tones of the photograph
work beautifully. There is a wonderful juxtaposition
between the backdrop of dark greens, and the primary
burst of colour from the comme des garçons clothing
iris is styled in.
What is your favourite camera to use?
an old pentax that belonged to my mum. It had a
stack of different lenses which came packaged in a
navy blue box. When I was about 15 I got really into
photography, but realised it was not my forte. I have
far too many friends who are better at it! My main
reason for loving that camera was the entire processfrom start to finish. I think part of the appeal was
being able to develop the film by hand. The camera is
a little bit busted now, but I have fond memories of
snapping away.

Illustrator & Graphic Novelist.
What was your first camera?
An olympus that was my Dad’s. But, I left it
in a cafe then it only had the flash left...
What was the first photo you remember
taking?
I had a birthday party when I was 5 where we
painted boxes. I took pictures on my Dad’s
camera (which later became mine.)
What does photography mean to you?
Taking consistently dreadful photos. I am a
terrible photographer.

Joe Luxton
Graphic Designer at Build.
What does photography mean to you?
It’s great on lots on lots of levels- for
me it’s a great way of keeping memories and
reminiscing.
What’s your favourite photo?
My Dad has got a photo album of when he was
about my age living in Hong Kong in the
70’s. They are all awesome -but they make me
a bit jealous too!
Do you remember your first camera?
I had a big, chunky neon red camera from
boots- I can’t remember specifically what
the first picture I took with it was but
it was most likely have been of my brother
Rich in some form of fancy dress, or as an
adventurer with lots of backpacks on.

Kaye Blegvad
Illustraor & jewellery designer.
What was the first camera you can remember
using?
a little red plastic point-and-shoot that i
had as a kid. i used it to take either very
blurry close ups or extreme long distance
shots of my cat.
Has photography influenced your work?
definitely - shooting photos myself has
been enormously useful for collecting
inspirations and images together to then
draw upon. And i often see photographs that
make me really want to draw.
Who is your favourite photographer?
I like Ellen Rogers a lot - seriously
analogue, hand printed, hand coloured
shots. Mostly of weird girls, up to witchy
business.

The first photo I really remember is of a

if I took it though, or if it was even my
cake.
It’s not fashionable but I like...
Medieval music.
What is your favourite camera?

Lion Summerbell
Mathmatic genius & Writer.
What was the first photo you remember taking?
I can remember my dad having an old Konica with a
pancake lens that I used to play around on a lot. I
think I remember trying to photograph him with it and
ending up with a solid black picture when the film
was developed.
Do you have a favourite photo or photographer?
There are some truly stunning photos in New York’s
Municipal Archive taken by an assortment of
twentieth-century photographers. I don’t remember the
name of it, but there’s an incredible black-and-whiteshot of one of the east side bridges in the middle
of the day, taken from almost underneath it, where
columns of sunlight have managed to slip through
the ironworks and have almost obscured the empty
street below. That stands out in my mind as a really
exceptional photo, and so I’d hazard saying it was my
favorite.
What is your favourite camera?
Being a poor photographer myself, I’m not really
qualified to parse the differences between this orthat camera, but I have got a nice Nikon F2 from
the late 70’s that I’ve done some shooting on and I
really do like it. It mutes colors in a way that jogs
the memory better than if they were overly lush.

Kelly Angood
Designer, Illustrator & Strategist.
W hat was the first picture you remember taking?
It was during a school trip where we went to watch a
replica of The Endeavour sail into the local port. I
took the picture because I was pretty impressed with
the boat, but it was all kinds of bleak on the banks
of the River Witham that day. When it came out it was
mega grainy and was essentially made up of various
shades of brown. The camera was rubbish- it was a
kids 35mm point and shoot with a pink and yellow
caterpillar on the front from Boots. It was all very
disappointing.
Digital or Analogue?
Both! I’m a huge advocate of digital photography.
The camera I use most is my iPhone but I love how
experimental you can be with film. I spent too much
time behind a computer as it is, so it’s great to get
back to using film. And, I’ve still not yet found a
decent way to replicate the colours you can get from
film in digital...
Describe your favourite photograph...
It’s me as a milky white baby wearing an ‘Ibiza’
t-shirt with an absolute screwface as I sit in-
between my super tanned, smiling parents in my Nan& Grandad’s back garden. I basically still have the
same face in most photographs.

Tobias Rafael Jury Morgan
Freelance Graphic Designer.
What is the most significant photo you’ve
ever taken?
It was a photograph of my Grandad’s house
after he died. I took a lot of photos in the
sun, in the old empty family home. Amazing
70’s decor.
What is your favourite camera?
My FE2. It’s a Nikon 35mm that my Dad took
around Africa with him when he was a studenttravelling. It’s still in full working
condition and takes great shots.
Has photography influenced your work?
Yes. I now almost exclusively work with
photography. I’ve more to observing the
world around me than making things from
scratch. Theres so much stuff to document.
