John 5:9b–249bNow that day was a sabbath. 10SotheJewssaidtothemanwhohadbeencured,‘Itisthesabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your mat.’ 11Butheansweredthem,‘Themanwhomademewellsaidtome,“Takeupyourmatandwalk.”’12Theyaskedhim,‘Whoisthemanwhosaidtoyou,“Takeitupandwalk”?’13Now the man who had been healed did not know whoitwas,forJesushaddisappearedinthecrowdthatwasthere.14Later Jesus found him inthetempleandsaidtohim,‘See,youhavebeenmadewell!Do not sin any more,sothatnothing worse happens to you.’ 15The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16Therefore the Jews started persecuting Jesus,becausehewasdoingsuch things on the sabbath. 17ButJesusansweredthem,‘MyFatherisstillworking,andIalsoam working.’ 18ForthisreasontheJewswereseekingallthemoretokillhim,becausehewasnotonlybreakingthesabbath,butwasalsocallingGodhisownFather,therebymakinghimselfequal to God.

19Jesussaidtothem,‘Verytruly,Itellyou,the Son can do nothing on his own,butonlywhatheseestheFatherdoing;forwhatevertheFatherdoes,theSondoeslikewise.20The Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing; and he will show him greater works thanthese,sothatyouwillbeastonished.21Indeed,justasthe Father raises the dead and gives them life,soalsotheSongiveslifetowhomsoeverhewishes.22TheFatherjudgesnoonebuthasgivenalljudgementtotheSon,23sothatallmayhonourtheSonjustastheyhonourtheFather. Everyone who claims to be a king sets himself against the emperor.’

SurelythosewhoconcealanypartoftheBookwhichAllahhasrevealedandsellHisrevelationsforapettyprice,shall swallow nothing but fire into their bellies.OntheDayofResurrection,Allah will neither speak to them nor purify them and they shall have painful punishment.174 Thesearethekindofpeoplewhobarterguidanceforerrorandforgivenessforpunishment.HowstubbornaretheytoencounterHellfire!175 Their doom is because Allah has revealed the Book withthetruth;surelythosewhoseekcausesofdisputeintheBookareinextremeschism.176

RighteousnessisnotwhetheryouturnyourfacetowardsEastorWest;butrighteousnessistobelieveinAllah,theLastDay,theAngels,theBooksandtheProphets,andtospendwealthoutofloveforHimonrelatives,orphans,helpless,needytravellers,thosewhoaskforandontheredemptionofcaptives;andtoestablishSalah,topayZakah,tofulfillpromiseswhenmade,tobesteadfastindistress,inadversity,andatthetimeofwar.These people are the truthful and these are the pious.177

Obelievers!Retaliationisprescribedforyouinthecasesofmurder:afreemanforafreeman,aslaveforaslave,andafemaleforafemale.Butifanyoneispardonedbyhisaggrievedbrother,thenbloodwitshouldbedecidedaccordingtothecommonlawandpaymentshouldbemadewithgratitude.ThisisaconcessionandamercyfromyourRabb.Now,whoever exceeds the limits after this, shall have a painful punishment.178Omenofunderstanding!Thereissecurityoflifeforyouinthelawofretaliation,sothatyoumaylearnself-restraint.179

Mansays:“What!OnceIamdead,shallIberaisedtolifeagain?”66 Does not man remember thatWecreatedhimbeforeoutofnothing?67ByyourRabb,WewillcallthemtoaccountinthecompanyofalltheirshaitãnsandsetthemontheirkneesaroundtheFireofHell;68 then from everysectWewillcertainlydragoutitsstoutestrebelsagainsttheCompassionate.69 Certainly Weknowbestwhodeservesmosttobeburnedtherein.70 There is not a single one of you, who shall not pass over it, this absolute decree of your Rabb is unavoidable;71thenWewill deliver those who were pious during their life on earth and leave the wrongdoers therein humbled on their knees.72WhenOurClearRevelationsarerecitedtothemtheunbelieverssaytothebeliever:“Whichone,ofthetwoofus,havefinedwellingandbettercompanions?”73 Don’t they see,how many generations have We destroyed before them,whowerefargreaterinrichesandinsplendor?74Tellthem:“Anyonewhohasgoneastray,theCompassionateprolongshisrespiteandextendsanopportunityuntiltheyseeaboutwhichtheywerewarned;-beitaworldlyscourgeortheHourofDoom-thentheywillrealizewhoseistheworstdwellingandwhosearetheweakcompanions?”75

Allah knows and you do not know.19WereitnotforthegraceandmercyofAllahtowardsyou,this scandal would have produced very bad results for you.AllahisindeedveryKind,mostMerciful.20
