uniquely mysterious and poetic atmosphere.
Hauteville House remained in the family until
1927, when Jeanne Nègreponte, Victor Hugo's
grand-daughter and the children of his
grandson Georges Hugo donated it to the City
of Paris on the occasion of the celebrations
marking one hundred years of Romanticism.
In 2002, the restored garden was opened to the
public for the bicentenary of Victor Hugo's birth.
The oak dubbed “the United States of Europe”
planted by the writer still thrives there,
towering over the fountain decorated with
snakes, the greenhouse and the stone bench.
Victor Hugo, theinterior decorator“I missed my vocation: I was born to be an
interior decorator” (Victor Hugo)
Victor Hugo's ideas became reality in the rooms of
Hauteville House. Charles Hugo, his elder son,
described it as “a three-storey manuscript, a poem
in several rooms”. The physical journey through the
house actually has a metaphorical dimension,
leading from the shadows of the vestibule
dominated by the porch of Notre-Dame de Paris to
the bright light of the Look Out, a glass roof onto
the infinite sky in front of which Victor Hugo wrote
standing up.
On the ground floor, time seems to stand still in the
billiard room which was sealed up in 1866 by the
writer who had amassed a collection of mementos
of the past, travel sketches and family portraits
from the Paris days there. Adjoining a hushed,
tapestry-clad drawing room, in which a former
photographic laboratory is concealed, is a studio-

cum-smoking room with access to the garden. In
the corridor displaying earthenware and in the
dining room, the ceramics arranged by Victor
Hugo catch the light. The tour is punctuated by
the gradual discovery of inscriptions carved by the
master of the house, including his motto in exile:
Exilium Vita Est (Life is an exile or Exile is life) and
his famous VH monogram, a leitmotif in which the
initial H merges with the initials of the house.
The first floor comprises two large reception
rooms where he entertained his many visitors and
games of charades took place based on themes of
his choice - the red drawing room with its
theatrical baroque atmosphere, draped with
sumptuous pearl-encrusted embroidery and the
blue drawing room decorated with mirrors and
articles from China.
On the second floor, the oak gallery, a temple-like
room dominated by a tree of fire designed by the
artist, contains a neo-gothic study and the
Garibaldi bedroom in which visitors can meditate
on the passage of time before a double-sided face
sculpted by James Pradier. Victor Hugo's personal
book collection located on the landing acts as a
transition and threshold from the public area to
the more private creative space on the third floor.
As the physical space gets smaller, the presence of
the presiding spirit of the house becomes more
tangible in the Look Out, “open to every horizon,
enormous for the soul and confining for the body,
containing everything in a tiny space, like a
captain's cabin” (Charles Hugo).
While Hauteville House is a place of pilgrimage
and a testament to the syncretic taste of the
nineteenth century, it is also a work of art in its
