Remember April… 2011 Toodyay Bug-In followed by the… Road Trip 2011

Well another show has come and gone and eve-rything seemed to go well

on the day. While the number of cars was a little down on last year‟s record number, we still had a number of new cars show up on the day and the club took nearly 20 new memberships. Memberships is now sitting at a record level for the club.

We tried out a bouncy castle for the first time and that worked well, we had some differ-ent types of stalls on the day including some extra food and they were kept busy. We had an official First Aid post on the day and that will continue in future to keep everybody safe and well on the day - no major incidents to report.

While some of our traditional sponsors were missing, we had a number of new ones step up to help assist with costs of running the event. Our sponsors are listed on page 14.

It was the first year of our new locked gate policy and this generally went well, although a number of cars were left out-side the show as their owners could not commit to the entire show time. The policy will continue from now on - cars must be in and parked by 11:00am and the gates wont open again until 3:00pm. This is for the safety of all show par-ticipants and members of the public.

Unfortunately, this was the last year for GO Edwards Park and we are now looking for a new venue for the 2011 show. All suggestions are welcome, but we are looking for a venue with public exposure.

Finally, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everybody ... Drive your VWs safely and we will see you in the new year...the year of the 2011 Toodyay Bug-in!

Family BBQ Picnic at Point

Walter Sunday 23rd January

Meet us from 11:00am –- bring your own picnic lunch or use the BBQs on site. Remember to bring chairs, rugs, sunscreen, drinks etc to make your day comfortable.

The most direct route is to travel along Canning Highway - east from Fremantle or west from the Kwinana Freeway - turn into Point Walter Road (Leopold Hotel on the corner) and just follow it to Pt Walter Reserve.

We look forward to a big turnout on what should be a nice summer‟s day. Every-one is welcome to attend the picnic.

For further information on the event, con-

tact Ray Willis 0407347340

The next one is south of the river on...Sunday, 09 January 2011, 10:00am - 12:00pm It has been suggested that we have a get together every month north and south of the river (Swan) on alternate months. We are picking venues with parking, toilets, swings and bbq's, in case you wish to stay for lunch. It's a chance for you to grab the paper and put a blanket on the ground, have a coffee, a walk, or let the children have a swing, kick a ball or just get some fresh air and exercise. Or bring your bike and go for a ride. The contact is Rod McSwain 9332 6919

The first one was at Jackadder Lake, Jackadder Way via Rosewood Avenue off Pearson St in Woodlands - SW of Innaloo Shopping Centre. Some photos from the get together...

2011 Bug-In show n shine Hello to all our members and VW enthusiasts out there. One of the main events for the 2011 Toodyay Bug-In is the Show n Shine.

We have a unique opportunity in 2011 to have our show in the main street of Toodyay and ask everybody to come along and fill up the street with VWs.

If you are in Toodyay for the Bug-in, the show is right on your doorstep and what better venue could you imagine. We are privileged to be able to present the show right in the middle of town.

If you are not in Toodyay, this is a Saturday morning event, so you can have a pleasant drive to this historic town and have breakfast at one of the great cafes, show your car and then see the sights around Toodyay in the afternoon.

There will be trophies for the best cars on the day and we hope to have some special displays incorporated for all to enjoy.

Super-Trucks and

Season

Finale The SuperTrucks was the grand-finale to a great year in Formula Vee. After hav-ing 19 cars on the track in September, we hoped to get to the magic 20, but fly-in-fly-out type issues inhibited en-tries to 18.

Keeping it short and sweet regarding the SuperTrucks Meeting in order to focus upon Championship out-comes:

Gold Star 1600:

The State Championship was on for Cameron Ed-wards, who lead Ben Riley by a mere four points, with 75 on offer. Edwards quali-fied on Pole by 5 / 1,000 second from Riley. Edwards suffered „brake chatter‟ all

day due to an undiagnosed problem despite new rotors and a new brake caliper.

Riley, on the other hand, had problems off the start line, thought to be linked to recent carburation changes. From the front row, he dropped to third in Race 1 and fifth in Race 2 as they entered WesTrac Corner for the first time.

Riley prevailed however, to win 3 from 3 followed by Ed-wards and Jacob Parsons in all three races. Campbell, Burns (Senior) and Allen were not far behind.

Silver Star 1200 – A spring chicken beats

the old fox:

The two rookies, Stewart Burns and Derek Bromlewe have been pecking at Bruce Welsh‟s tail all year. In Au-gust, Bromlewe beat the old fox in the third and final race to take the coveted Zamel‟s Plate.

After qualifying on 1200 Pole

Position, Welsh just couldn‟t quite get to the line first. „Spring Chicken Stuey‟ was-n't pecking the „Old Fox's Tail‟. Rather the opposite in fact, as Burns took 3 wins from 3 in the closest racing of the day.

Stuey seemed quite happy at the Clubhouse that night. What he didn't know was that the posterior section of his trousers had bite marks, rips, tears and holes, leaving a trail of feathers to the pres-entation area.

Results for the day were 1st Burns (Junior), 2nd Welsh, 3rd Bromlewe, followed by Lockett, McLay, Lamb, Scarey, Gorbould, Evans, Terlick, Bettridge and Wil-liams.

Results for the Year:

The two classes of Formula Vee each compete for two separate championships, namely the WASCC CAMS State Championship, and the FVAWA Club Champion-ship.

The former involves all seven state rounds. The latter is differentiated to give people who for various rea-sons cannot commit to all seven state rounds. The FVAWA Championship scores Rounds 1, 3, 5, 7 (drop worst round) but adds a visit to the new Collie Mo-torplex.

The committee of the FVAWA are pleased to see four different winners in the four categories - see table below.

Congratulations to all who competed this year for their sportsmanship and camara-derie.

Looking forward to 20 cars on the grid next year!

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is launching an extensive update of the popular selling Caddy range. The compact van with its practical rear sliding door system has been en-hanced in every respect. With new TDI and TSI four-cylinder engines and gearbox variations for every conceiv-able use and further reduced running costs make the new Caddy one of the most innovative urban delivery vehi-cles and compact vans available.

In Germany the Caddy is the undis-puted No.1 with a 43.6 per cent mar-ket share, while across Europe, at 16 per cent it is also among the three best-selling vehicles of its kind. Here in Australia the Caddy is also a leader in its segment. Globally the now su-perseded versions of the Caddy sold around 800,000 units within just six years (2004 to 2009). The new Caddy now promises a dynamic continuation of this success story.

The Caddy is the first urban delivery vehicle and compact van in its class to be equipped as standard with ESP on all models. The new Caddy will also be the only vehicle in this market seg-ment available with the option of an efficient 6 or 7-speed direct shift gear-box (DSG) and Hill Start Assist.

Also for the first time in the Caddy Life versions, it is possible to take out not only the optional third row of seating, but the second row as well. For the short wheelbase Caddy this produces – loaded to the roof – a cargo capacity of up to 3,200 litres; for the Caddy Maxi the figure is 3,880 litres.

The Caddy‟s new petrol and diesel engines deliver extreme efficiency [all complying with the Euro 5 emission limits]. All of these are completely new to the range and equipped with turbo-charging and direct fuel injection.

Turbo diesel engines: The turbo-charged four-valve (TDI) diesel en-gines deliver 75 kW and 103 kW re-spectively. These two TDIs now use very quiet and efficient common rail direct injection which is also linked as standard to a diesel particulate filter.

Petrol engines: Two new TSI petrol engines are being used in the Caddy. Technical features of both high-tech engines include a turbocharger and direct fuel injection. The extremely fuel-efficient four cylinder engines develop 63 kW and 77 kW respectively from a cubic capacity of 1.2 litres. The effi-ciency of the engines is demonstrated, for example, by the 77 kW version with an average fuel consumption of only 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres for the (equivalent to 163 g/km CO2 fig-ures). Compared to the outgoing model consumption has been reduced by 1.2 litres or 14.6 per cent.

New features: Standard on all ver-sions are the new daytime running lights. Optional extras on the new range include adaptive cornering lights (integrated into the front fog lights and roof rails).

Carsguide’s ‘Best Green

Car 2010’

Award It Is Not An Electric Car Or A Hybrid – It’s Volkswagen’s

Diesel Polo

The Volkswagen Polo is continuing its successful awards season taking out the title as Carsguide‟s „Best Green Car 2010‟.

The judges focused on criteria such as fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, car value and safety as well as vehicle technology and functionality. The Volkswagen Polo 66TDI received 31 points to take out the overall win, beat-ing other serious contenders.

With impressive fuel consumption fig-ures of 4.7 litres / 100km in combined cycle for the manual (4.6 litres / 100km with DSG) as well as low CO2 emissions of 124g/km (121g/km with DSG), it had an impact on the judges.

Stuart Martin, Adelaide Advertiser, was impressed with the Polo engine: “Volkswagen‟s new Polo might not be the cheapest contender in the Best Green Car field, but experience says it‟s a first-rate package – the diesel engine‟s numbers are tough to ig-nore.”

Volkswagen Group Australia‟s Manag-ing Director, Ms Anke Koeckler, is thrilled to receive recognition for the Polo‟s green credentials: “After the Polo 66TDI‟s win in this year‟s Austra-lia‟s Best Car Awards, it is fantastic to also be awarded for its great environ-mental aspect. The Polo demonstrates that you can drive a fun and stylish car while at the same time looking after the environment.”

Volkswagen to Contest 2011 Dakar Rally

with New Race

Touareg 3 Extreme desert passages, dizzying heights in the Andes, fast gravel sec-tions – the Dakar Rally remains the longest and toughest test in mo-torsport: Volkswagen is determined to bring the title home to Wolfsburg for the third consecutive time. This is the aim for which the new Race Touareg 3 and the four proven driver pairings have been carefully prepared. Volks-wagen is the only manufacturer so far to have decided the automobile classi-fication of the desert classic in its fa-vour with diesel technology. From 01 to 16 January 2011, which marks the third edition of the “Dakar” through Argentina and Chile, the historic 2009 and 2010 exploits are to be suc-ceeded by another triumph with TDI power. The challenge remains an im-mense one: in addition to battling very powerful rally rivals, the Volkswagen squad first has to successfully master the gruelling special stages, which means beating the “Dakar” itself.

“The two past Dakar victories are the greatest successes which Volkswagen has so far achieved in motorsport. But this by no means makes the task any easier. Our rivals will do everything within their power to defeat us, plus the entire squad will be in for 14 tough days,” says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “This is why we didn‟t rest on our laurels but have sys-tematically optimised the Race Touareg on the proven base. Mechan-ics, engineers, co-drivers and drivers, as well, have been working on many details to be prepared better than ever. It will again be a difficult task but we‟re tackling the 2011 Dakar Rally with confidence. Our aim is to win for the third consecutive time.”

four 310-hp “Dakar” prototypes will be piloted at the cross-country rally from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans and back by proven driver/co-driver pair-ings. Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz (E/E) – who have been unbeaten at four jointly contested cross-country rallies so far – will start into the event as the title defenders. The winners of the 2009 “Dakar” – Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz (ZA/D) – are regarded as equally tough team internal rivals as Nasser Al-Attiyah/Timo Gottschalk (Q/D), who finished 2010 as the run-ners-up with a narrow margin, and Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/ZA), who were the narrowly beaten runners-up in 2009.

The next one is always the toughest one: 9,000 “Dakar” kilometres through South America

The most arid region on Earth is the Dakar Rally‟s centrepiece: the Ata-cama desert. In 2011 six of the 14 special stages will take place in these inhospitable areas. In addition to high dunes with deep sand, two crossings of the Andes at altitudes of over 4,700 metres above mean sea level and fast gravel stages on hard soil will be part of the daily challenges.

High-tech made in Wolfsburg: the third-generation Race Touareg

Remembering one‟s own fortes plus the courage to follow familiar paths in a radically new way: the Volkswagen Race Touareg 3 that has been freshly developed for the 2011 Dakar Rally is both an evolution and a revolution. A proven core subjected to further devel-opment and new aerodynamics – this is the heading the engineers selected for the evolution of the “RT2” into the “RT3“. The minds behind the succes-sor to the cross-country rally prototype from Wolfsburg that had been victori-ous in both the 2009 and 2010 Dakar Rallies pursued three aims: a more efficient cooling system, more power output at high altitudes and improved driveability were the key topics driving the development of the four-wheel vehicle that now delivers 310 hp. Be-tween the beginning of the design of the third-generation Race Touareg in mid-April and its competitive debut and first victory at the Silk Way Rally through Russia in mid-September no more than about 150 days passed: a tightly packed programme which, in addition to the concept design, in-cluded the body of the first prototype, numerous rig tests and quality inspec-tions, the roll-out plus long-run tests covering the simulated double “Dakar”

distance.

“With the Race Touareg 3 we were seeking to achieve a balance between deploying completely new develop-ments and our strengths that have grown over the past few years,” says Eduard Weidl, “Dakar” Project Man-ager at Volkswagen Motorsport. “There is no other motorsport disci-pline where absolute resistance and reliability count as much as at the Da-kar Rally. In view of this, every single decision we took with respect to the vehicle‟s further development involved a process of weighing up the options. I am convinced that we have managed to make what has to date been the world‟s most powerful and most reli-able cross-country rally vehicle even better for 2011.”

Radical air flow routing, more efficient powertrain components, clever soft-ware

Although it accounts for less than three per cent of the Race Touareg 3‟s total weight, it is the crucial compo-nent of its evolution into the third model generation: the body. The outer skin of the “Dakar” prototype made of carbon fibre reinforced plastics merely tips the scales at near-50 kilograms.

But in terms of shape it is a milestone achievement in which Volkswagen has realised a new cooling concept in ad-dition to visually adapting the rally pro-totype to the model change of its pro-duction counterpart. The radiators lo-cated behind the cockpit were enlarged and receive an optimal sup-ply of fresh air thanks to a double air inlet in the roof. The fuel, brake and damper cooling systems were per-fected as well. The new air flow rout-ing reduces the accumulation of air underneath the carbon skin. Espe-cially on hot desert stretches driven at relatively low speeds where the amount of air supplied is accordingly low while the required engine power is high nonetheless this leads to a nota-ble plus in performance.

Another area on which the engineers focused their attention was the power-train components of the new Race Touareg 3. In addition to numerous detailed improvements, a new gear ratio improves driveability. A new intercooler, developed in collaboration with the prototyping department of the Volkswagen brand, which replaces the supplier component that has tradition-ally been used in many motorsport categories with a proprietary part, de-livers a significant efficiency increase. Less pressure losses in the entire in-tercooling system enable a higher power output of the 2.5-litre TDI en-gine. The five-in-line unit with a two-stage turbocharger now delivers 310 hp.

The Dakar Rally will cross the moun-tain ranges of the Andes twice on its way through Argentina and Chile. The highest elevation to be mastered by the four Race Touareg 3 cars is the San Francisco pass between Chile and Argentina at 4,726 metres above mean sea level. The factor height plays a crucial part in the battle for overall victory particularly at the Dakar Rally in South America. Volkswagen left nothing to chance with respect to this aspect either: the altitude applica-tion developed for the 2009 and 2010 Dakar Rally received a software up-date for 2011 which keeps perform-ance losses in thinner air as low as possible.

State-of-the-art: the suspension com-ponents of the Race Touareg 3

Hilltop jumps and fast gravel sections on the one hand and soft, deep desert sand on the other: the characteristics of any Dakar Rally day fundamentally change several times on the special stages. This poses an enormous chal-lenge particularly to the versatility of the suspension components. The sus-pension used in the “RT3” is state-of-the-art thanks to many years of de-tailed developments. Friction in the suspension has been permanently reduced ever since Volkswagen en-tered cross-country rally sport and launched the Race Touareg program. Due to the use of special mounts the suspension of the “RT3” generates a maximum of traction. In addition, the Race Touareg 3 owes a plus in drive-ability to the use of high-performance dampers – two per wheel – which were developed in collaboration with technology partner ZF Sachs Race Engineering.

Andreas Lautner: “Our preparation is our really big strength”

A gruelling desert, extreme climatic conditions, high altitudes: the Dakar Rally is the toughest test in mo-torsport. Volkswagen will be fielding the newly developed Race Touareg 3. Andreas Lautner, Technical Director of Volkswagen Motorsport, is responsible for the mission. A brief interview.

How much restraint is necessary and how much courage is possible to de-velop a successor to a victorious “Dakar” car like the Race Touareg 3? “With respect to the suspension devel-opment we were indeed very conser-vative because we were able to draw on a proven system that is very com-petitive. Our really big strength lies in

our careful preparation and the result-ing reliability, which we had to pre-serve despite detailed optimisations. Instead we put our main focus on opti-mising the aerodynamics, which en-abled us to achieve major progress in cooling. I believe that we managed to achieve a good compromise between risk and restraint.”

What is the advantage of the new air flow routing of the Race Touareg 3? “The new aerodynamics of the Race Touareg 3 is the result of experience gained over the past few years. The question was: how can we improve the performance capabilities of the car? We realised that the combination of high altitudes, high ambient tem-peratures and the condition of the ter-rain may lead to high water tempera-tures. Although this was not harmful to the car thanks to our component pro-tection it did result in a performance loss. We rethought this topic from scratch and then completely revised our cooling concept.”

What other development objective was ranking at the very top of the specifications? “The modification of the intercooling system was a major objective. The main focus, initially, was not on increased power and per-formance but on higher component quality. Up to that point, we‟d already been using the best product on the market. Together with Volkswagen Prototyping we developed an internal solution that now replaces this sup-plier component with an in-house component. That in the end we also achieved a plus in performance was a welcome side effect.”

A progress in maintenance was achieved with the Race Touareg 3 as well. What kind of progress? “Before and during the „Dakar‟ the body and the maintenance of the vehi-cles are key aspects. On location, there is no clinical cleanliness like in a Formula 1 paddock. Instead the vehi-cles become extremely dirty. There-fore, we added even more detail to our meticulous documentation – a sort of bodywork handbook for mechanics if you like. It was important to us to as-sure that all four Race Touareg cars to be fielded at the 2011 „Dakar‟ are ab-solutely identical to the vehicle with which didn‟t have the slightest prob-lem during the two-week long-run tests. Now we‟ve assured this down to the level of the smallest detail.”

Facts and figures on the “Dakar” tech-nology of the Race Touareg 3 14 Dakar Rally legs – a cross-country marathon from the Atlantic to the Pa-cific Oceans and back. Facts and fig-ures on the technology of the Volks-wagen Race Touareg 3.

Did you know that ... ... a total of 132 sensors are installed in the Race Touareg 3? They record temperatures, pressures and me-chanical movements.

... that 250 MB of sensor data is read and analysed by the engineers every day on location? The data volume cor-responds to about 16,500 A4-size pages of pure, single-spaced informa-tion.

... every minute detail of the Race Touareg 3 must have been run in tests over at least one and a half of the “Dakar” distance without any problems before being fielded? The approval tests concern single components and component assemblies.

... the quickest deflection motion of the suspension amounts to about nine metres per second? The regulations limit suspension travel for Class T1 “Dakar” prototypes like the Race Touareg 3 to 250 millimetres. The sus-pension travel of other vehicles, such as those in the Buggy category, may amount to about 1,000 millimetres.

... the damper pistons cover a dis-tance of about 150 metres of cumu-

lated movement per kilometre at the Dakar Rally?

... the Dakar Rally, in addition to soft desert sand, also features fast gravel sections? On the penultimate leg of last year‟s event between San Rafael and Santa Rosa the longest flatout distance driven by Volkswagen “factory” driver Nasser Al-Attiyah with-out lifting was 30,013 metres. In 2011 special stages in “La Pampa” will be part of the route again.

... the Race Touareg 3 with a weight of 1,787.5 kilograms prescribed by the regulations is lighter than the vehicles of its direct rivals but that instead its engine is limited to a displacement of 2.5 litres?

... the typical maximum levels of brak-ing pressure generated by a driver amount to about 70 Bar? This equates to the atmospheric pressure that ex-ists, for example, at a water depth of 700 metres.

... Carlos Sainz in January 2010, on the special stage between Antofaga-sta and Copiapó, changed gears a total of 2,066 times? In 2011 this leg – albeit with a new route – will be on the agenda again.
