The direct consoleappearsifyouattachamonitortothehost.Ifyouinstallthe

WhenyoupowerontheESX Server3ihostforthefirsttime(orwhenyoupoweronthe
hostafteryouresetthehosttotheconfigurationdefaults),thehostentersabootup
phaseduringwhichsystemnetworkandstoragedevicesareconfiguredwithdefaults.
ThedefaultbehaviorfornetworkingisfortheDynamicHostConfigurationProtocol
(DHCP)toconfigureIP.Thedefaultbehaviorforstorageisforallvisibleblankinternaldiskstobeformattedwiththevirtualmachinefilesystem(VMFS)sothatvirtual
machinescanbestoredonthedisks.
Afterthehostcompletesthebootupphase,thedirectconsoleappearsontheattached

storage
devices

defaults.
The
default
behavior
for
storageisforthesoftwaretoformatallvisibleblankinternaldisksontheinstallation
harddrivewithVMFS,soyoucanstorevirtualmachinesonthedisks.

hostyouarebackinguporrestoring),oronaremotehost.However,torestorea
configurationonthetargethost,youmustruntheRemoteCLIvirtualappliancefrom
aremotehost.
Whenyourestoretheconfiguration,thetargethostmustbeinmaintenancemode,
