HURDCO International School Subject: Biology. Lesson: 3 Topic: 6.02 – Touch, taste and smell Grade: VI

Subject Teachers: Ms. Popy Biswas, Ms.Tasfiya Kifayet Kabir, Ms Maisha Fariha,

Sense organs Sensitive to Gives us the sense of

Skin Pressure, heat and cold touch

Tongue Chemicals in food and drink taste

Nose Chemicals in the air smell

Ears Sound and movement Hearing and balance

Eyes light sight

Mechanism of any sensation:

Step-1. Sense organ detects a stimulus.

Step-2. It sends messages along the nerves to the brain.

Step-3. Brain gives us the sensation.

Skin: Our sense of touch is produced by the end of the nerve cells in our skin. These are

called nerve endings.

(N.B. Follow the 2 diagrams from book: pg-138)

Position of the nerve endings in skin Sensation Effect of the sensation

Deep inside the skin Heavy pressure Warn us about pressure which can bruise us

Near the skin surface Light pressure Tell us about the texture of an object

Very close to the skin surface Pain Our skin is cut or burn

Deep inside the skin Heat and cold They detect the changes in temperature(for

example: weather change, cold or hot object)

These nerve endings wrapped around

the base of a hair.

These detect if the hair is moved or pulled

The tongue:

Fig.1: Taste areas of human tongue Taste buds

Page 30: VI Secondary English Unit: 10 and Adverb A. Completing the ...

Our tongue contains tiny sense organs called taste buds.(The average person has 10000 taste buds and

they are replaced every 2 weeks)

There are different taste buds for tasting bitter, sour, salty and sweet foods.

Taste buds are sensitive to chemicals in food.

These chemicals must dissolve in saliva before we can taste them. This is why dry food has no taste

until we chew it to mix it with saliva.

The sense of taste is useful because

a) It stimulates our stomach to produce gastric juice for digestion.

b) Many poisonous and bad foods have a nasty taste. So we can spit them out before they harm us.

A food can stimulate more than one kind of taste buds at the same time.

The nose:

How do we get the smells?

Smells are chemicals in the air .The chemicals dissolve in moisture on the lining of our nose. This

stimulates nerve endings in our nose to send messages to our brain which produces the sensation of

smell.

Humans can detect about 3000 different smells. Smells help animals to hunt food and find their way.

Smell can also warn of certain danger.
