VT-bearings are designed ascombined thrust and guidebearings with axial and journalparts; whereas the VG bear-ings are supplied as guidebearings with journal part only.
The bearing housing isdesigned in accordance withFEM to absorb high axialloads, including shock loads.
The journal and axial insertscan be used in combinationwith housings of differentsizes.
In the case of slow speedmachines the heat dissipationwill be natural cooling. In suchcases, a relatively small bear-ing housing will be necessary,since the oil quantity is lowand there is no need for spacefor a water cooler. The sameapplies to medium speedbearings connected to anexternal oil system.
Due to the higher oil quantity,the medium speed bearingsneed a larger housing.
RENK can offer you the mostsuitable bearing housing tosatisfy each specific applica-tion.
The bearing housing, made of3 separate parts (bottom,jacket, cover), is easy to ser -vice. Removal or installation ofthe journal or axial parts isalso easy.
Axial PartThe circular, tilting RD-thrustpads are a major characteris-tic of the VT bearings. Thepads are supported on cupsprings which ensure uniformload distribution. The bearingsas standard are provided with12 RD-thrust pads which sup-port downward loads. Ifrequired, the bearing shell canbe provided with a variablenumber of RS-thrust pads totake upward axial loads.
Journal PartThe journal part functions as aguide bearing. The plain cylin-drical bore is provided withseveral lubricating grooves. If
required, the bearing can beprovided with a four lobe shellinstead of the plain cylindricalbore. This type of shell has astabilising effect when theshaft is not loaded or onlyslightly loaded.
Heat Dissipation andLubricationDepending on the applicationand operating conditions theVT- and VG-bearings are usedwith
- natural cooling- natural cooling with fan,- cooling by external oil
circulation,- water cooling
or- water cooling plus fan
cooling.
In the case of a water-cooledbearing the cooler is mountedinto the bearing housing.Depending on the water quali-ty, the cooler is made of Cu orCuNi10Fe or titanium (finnedtube cooler).
The use of a fan makes theapplication of a natural cooledbearing with higher speedspossible.
If a circulating oil system isused, the housing is providedwith an overflow weir. The weirmaintains a bath of oil withinthe bearing housing to ensuresafe short-term lubrication inthe event of an external oilsupply failure.
Temperature MonitoringFor temperature monitoring ofthe thrust pads or of the guidebearing RENK supplies theespecially developedresistance thermometersensors (PT 100).
Oil Flow Control forCirculating Oil SystemsWe recommend the use of theflow meter type NJV-MI, espe-cially developed for applica-tion with slide bearings. Theseflow meters can be checkedvisually or, if fitted with aswitching device, can bemoni tored electrically.

Further TypesSpecial Design Bearings
Type VBThis bearing type can absorbthrust loads in both directions.The bearing shell can bemade to accomodate a vari-able number of RS-thrustpads to carry the upwardthrust load. Upon receipt ofthe proposed operational duty,we will determine the correctnumber of RS-thrust pads andthe housing size.
Type V.FBoth the natural cooled bear-ing (N) and the water cooledbearing (W) can be additional-ly equipped with fan cooling.The fan cooling increases therate of heat dissipation overthe bearing housing.
Type X (special)with hydrostatic jackingTo accomodate high axialloads (greater than the cata-logue Fas values) from a stand-ing start, the RD-thrust padscan be designed to inject highpressure oil from a hydrostaticjacking system.
Type X (special)with enlarged axial part(FAB ¯)The admissible axial load canbe increased by using biggerRD-thrust pads. In such casesthere will be a reduction of themaximum diameter of shaftpermitted in way of the standpipe.
The shaft seals are meant to:- prevent oil getting out of the
bearing,- prevent penetration of water
or foreign particles such assand dust, into the bearing.
Based on the modular unitsystem and depending on theapplication cases the bearingsare equipped with the corre-sponding sealing systems.
The shaft seals must meetcertain requirements, such asfor instance, to prevent thepenetration of water or foreignparticles.
Upon delivery of the opera-tional requirements RENK can determine the necessary seal-ing system. The customer’sspecifications on protectiongrade according to DIN 40050or IEC-529 are extemely usefulin selecting the correct sealingarrangement.
Stand pipe with / without pipe sealThe stand pipe is attached to the bottom side of bearing and keeps theoil inside the tank.
With speeds over 13,5 m/s the journal bearing is provided with a standpipe seal. The stand pipe seal controls the formation of foam within theoil bath of the bearing.
The stand pipe meets with the following protection requirements:Stand pipe with / without seal IP 23.
Single gap sealThe single gap seal is mounted on the top and bottom side of the bear-ing. Fixed to the top of the bearing the gap seal functions as a standardseal.
The single gap seal can be fixed to the bottom side of the bearing inaddition to the stand pipe (with / without stand pipe seal).
The single gap seal corresponds to the following protection grades:single gap seal on the top IP 42single gap seal on the bottom in addition to the stand pipe with /withoutstand pipe seal IP 43.
Double seal (DUO-seal) with connections for air seal / pressure compensationThe use of the DUO-seal increases the protection grade. Before deter-mining the seal type it is necessary to clarify which side (bottom or top)of the bearing must be protected.
The DUO-seal corresponds to the following protection grades:Duo seal on the top IP 44DUO seal on the bottom additionally to the stand pipe with / withoutstand pipe seal IP 44.
Labyrinth seal with single gap seal and grease packingThis type of seal is mainly used to protect the top of the bearing. Due tothe additional grease packing this seal can be used in almost all applica-tion field.
The labyrinth seal with single gap seal and grease packing correspondsto the protection grade IP 56.
