Manhole Construction: A Reusable GRP Invert

Shuttering System

Page 2: Vertform - manhole construction

Learning Aims and Objectives

• Methods of manhole construction and the challenges faced when

constructing manholes

• How to use an invert shuttering system and its results • When can an invert shuttering system be used.

Page 3: Vertform - manhole construction

To introduce a reliable method for creating

stable, watertight manhole bases with the

required profile.

What problems are faced when

constructing manholes?

Page 4: Vertform - manhole construction

Understanding different methods of

manhole construction

Page 5: Vertform - manhole construction

Rough Forming

• Base created manually with a

shovel using semi-dry

concrete

• Finished with a layer of

smooth concrete

Page 6: Vertform - manhole construction

Rough Shuttering

• Plywood and timber boats are

used to create a channel in the

manhole base

• Finished by hand

Page 7: Vertform - manhole construction

Half Pipe Segments

• Segments set in semi-dry concrete to form the base

• Finished by hand

Page 8: Vertform - manhole construction

Bespoke Timber Formwork

• Made to suit each individual

structure

• Can accommodate additions such

as sumps and hydro-break

systems

Page 9: Vertform - manhole construction

• Made to create watertight manhole inverts

and bases in a single operation

• Eliminates the need for concrete remedial

work

• No hand finishing required

• Correct profile can be created consistently

• Reusable

How To Use The Vertform

Shuttering System

Page 11: Vertform - manhole construction

• Base components are selected to form the required angle

• Any angle between 90 degrees and 180 degrees can be accommodated

Page 12: Vertform - manhole construction

• The side components are attached to the base, and the

Verform is secured in place using jacks

Page 13: Vertform - manhole construction

• Once complete, the entire shutter is sprayed with releasing

agent and vibrated concrete is poured around the mould

• Once set, the Vertform can be easily removed
