Fabrication Worksheet When you leave school soon, have you considered what you want to do in the future? Do you and your mates know about the training you could receive at the Neta Training School and it’s is right on your doorstep? You could be trained by qualified trademen and engineers in numerous disciplines,to give you the skills and knowledge required to find employment in engineering. Have you ever considered “Fabrication” as a trade and do you know what fabrication is? Before people come into industry, they think fabrication is what is noted in the captions below and they don’t know what sort of work they would be embarking on. So over the next few pages I will give you a brief insight into what this trade involves and the skills you will need to do this.

When you leave school soon, have you considered what you want todo in the future? Do you and your mates know about the training youcould receive at the Neta Training School and it’s is right on yourdoorstep? You could be trained by qualified trademen and engineersin numerous disciplines,to give you the skills and knowledge requiredto find employment in engineering. Have you ever considered “Fabrication” as a trade and do you knowwhat fabrication is? Before people come into industry, they thinkfabrication is what is noted in the captions below and they don’t knowwhat sort of work they would be embarking on. So over the next few pages I will give you a brief insight into what thistrade involves and the skills you will need to do this.
Fabrication Worksheet
In our industry, fabricators are usually called Plater’s and a plater workson site and in engineering workshops. They work off engineeringdrawings and isometrics when doing pipe brackets and fabricatedassemblies. The steel used ranges from 3mm thick to over 300mm thick and it isgenerally low carbon steel and stainless steels. Alloys are used byspecialist companies, mainly in aerospace fabrication and aluminium isalso used. And these are some of the typesof engineering drawings a plater would use, and you would be trained up on how to readthem at Neta. Below is fabrication workshop, showing the different types of work that a plater would do.

To give you and insight into what a Plater does, they are involved withstructural work – rolled steel joists, columns, channels and angle barsetc. Building bridges, oil rigs, ships, petro-chemical installations, cranes, platforms, walkways, handrails, roof trusses and virtually anything thatcan be fabricated out of steel. Note: The arch on the Wembley Stadium was built at Cleveland Bridge inDarlington and plater’s did a lot of the construction. Platers also produce pipework – Using either standard “off the shelf”pipes or fabricating pipes to large diameters. Work includes: ductwork, pressure vessels, heat exchanges, boiler’s and tanks etc. Platework – This covers any other type of fabrication that does not fitinto the categories above. Work includes: Machine guards, bulkheads, blastwalls, hoppers and chutes etc. Pressure Vessel Hopper Fabrication Skills include marking off, assembly, template making andpattern development are fundamental skills of the plater. They also haveto be multi-skilled in the use of heavy machines and oxy-fuel cuttingequipment. Also setting out at sites using dumpy levels and theodolites, producing level and vertical datum points prior to construction. Oxy/Fuel Torch Quicky Burner Dumpy Level

Plater’s can also use the welding equipment to “tack up” all thefabricated components to produce a full assembly and this will includeusing the following processes: MMA Manual Metal ArcTIG Tungsten InertGas and MIG Manual Inert Gas. Final Thought This was just a quick overview of what is meant by the word“Fabrication”and the role of the plater in engineering. So I hope this has wet yourappetite to embark on a course at Neta Training, to provide you with thenecessary skills to enable you to embark in the world of engineering? Before you go, please have a crack at the word search below:

Craftsmen and Engineers have been working with sheet metal for manyhundreds of years and we are still developing new skills and techniquesand are still using traditional machines alongside new technology. Can you identify and name the hand tools shown above?

Learning about how to work safely very important. There can be manyhazards in a work environment which could potentially harm you. Can you spot anything in this picture you think is wrong? 1.2.3.4.5.
