National Volunteer Week, April 18 through 24, is one of the highlights of the year for the Fresh Air Fund, and I would like to use this opportunity to extend my deepest thanks to our dedi-cated Fresh Air hosts, volunteers and supporters in our communi-ty. Year after year, our volunteers demonstrate their commitment to helping New York City chil-dren by continuing the Fresh Air tradition in our community.

... ‘All My Sons’...I want to recommend to all my

friends in Guideland that they catch the current production of Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons” at Hubbard Hall in Cambridge.

I was in tears at the close of yes-terday’s performance. Everything came together perfectly. I had not seen this play since Broadway.

Yesterday it was still a knockout. Though the entire cast was stun-ning, I must single out both Joan Coombs and Melissa Herion for honoring this iconic American drama with their work.

Under the direction of Randolyn Zinn and Allen McCullough, this drama of war fought in the air, in the factory and, perhaps most explosively, in one back yard, moves us all these years later. In “All My Sons” Miller grabs us by the collar, shakes us awake and exposes the dangers of keeping family secrets.

Almquist has graduated from the Fire Support Specialist Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Sill, Lawton, Oklahoma. The field artillery specialists serve in intelligence activities including target pro-cessing in field artillery, cannon battalions, division artillery, artil-lery and maneuver brigade and headquarters and fire support elements.

The course is designed to train students to establish, maintain, and operate radio and wire com-munications and speech security equipment, including encoding and decoding messages. They also must prepare and maintain daily staff journals, fire support situation maps, charts and other fire support and target process-ing procedures, records, and documents. In addition, students assist in initiating requests for field artillery, mortar, naval gun-fire, and aerial delivered muni-tions, and emplace, maintain, and assist in the operation of laser range finders, target designation, and night observation devices.

Almquist is the son of Kevin A. Almquist of Randolph, Vermont.

His former guardian, Gail Billings, resides in Rutland, Vermont.

The private is a 2008 gradu-ate of Middlebury Union High School, Vermont.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Aaron L. Parrott has returned to Fort Richardson, Anchorage, Alaska after being deployed to Afghanistan for one year. The soldier is one of 3,500 members of the 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division stationed at Fort Richardson. Airborne com-bat team members included sol-diers assigned to one of six bat-talions and regiments of the 25th Infantry Division.

The airborne brigade served in three eastern provinces of Afghanistan, which included

the Paktya, Paktika and Khost. Some of the challenges the bri-gade soldiers faced included poverty, unemployment, secu-rity, and management of natu-ral resources and government institutions. Soldiers improved roads, provided vocational train-ing in construction and civics, improved and re-opened 29 schools, remodeled six medical clinics and improved three dis-trict courthouses.

While deployed in Afghanistan, he was decorated with a Bronze Star Medal.

Parrott, a platoon sergeant with 19 years of military service, is assigned to the 425th Brigade Special Troops Battalion.

He is the son of Ernestine P. Woolery of East St., New Haven, Vermont.

The sergeant graduated in 1990 from Vergennes Union High School, Vermont, and earned a bachelor’s degree in 2007 from Chapman University, Monterey, California.

Mountain School Welcomes New Board Member

On behalf of the Mountain School at Winhall’s board and its faculty and staff, Debbie Peretz, Board Chair, welcomes the newest board member, Eugene Shchemelev.

Eugene and his wife, Irina, are the parents of MSW fifth grader, Nikita Shchemelev, and residents of Winhall. Mr. Shchemelev is also the owner of TECOM Group, a U.S. company that pro-vides engineering and design services to customers in America and around the world.

Giant Rummage Sale

A giant rummage sale will be held in Wells, Vermont on Friday, April 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday, April 17, 9 a.m. to noon. This event will be held at the First United Church, located on the village green.

You will find spring and sum-mer clothing. They have every-thing for men, women and chil-dren, all in several different sizes. They also have shoes, accessories and handbags. Flea market items include crafts, knick-knacks, books, magazines and videos.

Be sure to check out the plant sale. Sue has interesting house plants as well as the first tomato plants for 2010 in four-inch pots.

The big bag sale will be held on Saturday at only $3 per bag. Donations of clean spring and summer clothing is still being accepted. Drop off your dona-tions at the church, 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday and Thursday, April 14 and 15. This event is presented by the Wells United Methodist Church. Exhibit Extended: To Life! A Celebration of Vermont Jewish Women

The Vermont Historical Society is pleased to announce an extension of the exhibit titled “To Life! A Celebration of Vermont Jewish Women” through July 3. This historic exhibit celebrating the stories of twenty Jewish Vermont women from all walks of life, from age 12 to 101 is currently running at the Vermont History Museum at 109 State Street in Montpelier.

Each woman’s story is illustrated with a large photographic portrait, archival photos, an essay, selected quotes, and anecdotes from each woman. There are also works of contemporary Vermont Jewish women artists on display.

In discussing the exhibit, Mark Hudson, the Vermont Historical Society’s executive director, said, “These women embody the very essence and spirit that is Vermont. This exhibit documents the impact of these women on their Jewish communities, their hometowns, and the state of Vermont.”

Week of the Young ChildThe Northshrie Day School would like to let the community know of

the activities they will be doing in celebration of the Week of the Young Child, April 12 through 16. They will hold a parent breakfast consisting of bagels and cream cheese donated by Bagel Works; children’s artwork will be hung up throughout Manchester; some community members will read to the children; Alexandra Smith will provide her wonderful Hullabaloo program; Debbie Zaccheo will share her Music Together program; a pajama and pizza day will be held; and a bounce house has been rented for the kids’ enjoyment to end this fun-filled week.

Family History: Beyond the BasicsThe Dorset Historical Society has again invited Linda French to give

a series of workshops designed to help people advance the project of exploring their family history. The new series will take place on three Sundays, April 18 and 25, and May 2, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at DHS’s Bley House Museum. Session I will be devoted to “Conquering Brick Walls: assessing research problems and getting past dead ends;” Session II to family stories, including family skeletons. Session III, entitled “Leaving a Family History Legacy,” will range over scrapbooks, narratives, time capsules, and much more.

A magna cum laude graduate of California State Universtity, Dominquez, Ms. French majored in history. She has been a librarian, archivist, and museum curator, genealogy lecturer, and a researcher who has explored the history of families in 26 American states, as well as England, Ireland, Wales, Germany, Poland, and Sweden.

The upcoming DHS series is described as “connected, but not sequential.” The fee (including materials) for the three workshops is $40 for non-members ($30 for members). Local Habitat Selects Next FamilyRichard Malley, President of the Bennington Area Habitat for

Humanity Affiliate, is pleased to announce that Tina and Jeff Reed of Bennington have been selected to become the affiliate’s next family partners. The Reed family has lived and worked in the area for over twenty years. Jeff and Tina, as well as three of their children, Nicholas, Taigan, Katie, and one grandchild, Carter, will be moving into the two-story, four bedroom home when it is completed. Speaking about their new home, Jeff wrote, “We have been working toward this goal for many years. It will mark the beginning of a better future for us. Having a home we can call our own will truly be a life-changing event for our family.” It will be a home the Reeds and many volunteers will create together, a home built on a foundation of hard work, caring and pride.

This construction project on Silver Street, including the price of the land, will cost close to $150,000. Skilled and unskilled volunteers help make the home affordable by contributing almost all of the labor. The affiliate will continue to seek funds this spring and summer from individuals and area businesses to cover expenses. Dina and Henry Bronson, owners of Bistro Henry, will help by donating $10 for every Mother’s Day brunch served on Sunday, May 9.

When a home is completed, Habitat conveys an interest free mort-gage, with monthly payments established so housing costs, mortgage, taxes, and insurance do not exceed more that thirty percent of the family’s annual income.

Songs From the FortThis Saturday, April 17, at 8 p.m., Fort Salem Theater reprises origi-

nal songs that were first produced in its two performing spaces, the Mainstage and the Cabaret. The cast includes Susan Cicarelli Caputo, Dan and Elias Garfinkel, Jay and Lynne Kerr, and Jessica O’Keefe.

Several of the featured performers actually introduced the new songs since the Kerrs took over operation of the thirty-nine year old theater in 2007. Taking the Mainstage, an existing performing space, and renovat-ing it with a new proscenium arch and vintage seats from Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theater, they also created an intimate cabaret space in an area formerly housing dressing rooms. Fort Salem became “Washington County’s Home for Music, Musicals, and Cabaret,” and an outlet for original productions, many with music by Artistic Director Jay Kerr, an ASCAP Award Winning Composer, who relocated from Manhattan to nearby Hebron.

The community got its first taste of Kerr’s original music when he and Ms. Caputo co-starred in Songs of War and Peace, in September, 2007. They will each sing an original number from that show this Saturday. In December of the same year, the renovated Mainstage opened with “A Christmas Carol: A New Musical,” music and lyrics by Kerr, this time with collaborator Jeremy Blachman. Reviews called the production “zestful,” “a winning book and score.” On Saturday Jessica O’Keefe, as she did in 2007, will perform the number that opened that show.

From Adirondack Awakening, created in 2008 with the support of a LARAC grant, by Kerr and Stephen Trombley, Sue Caputo will reprise her moving solo about a teenage girl sent to a tuberculosis sanatorium at the turn of the twentieth century. Other offerings include numbers from “Wine, Woman and Song” and three shows by Al Budde and Kerr:

Learn the Art of Cheese at J. K. AdamsCome to J.K. Adams Kitchen Store to learn “The Art of Cheese” with

chef and cookbook author Allison Hooper of Vermont Butter and Cheese Creamery on Saturday, April 24, at 1:00 p.m.

Allison will demonstrate how to create Warm Toasted Bijou Salad from her new book “From a Cheese Maker’s Kitchen.” Along with offer-ing cheese tastings, Allison will also speak about how to create a cheese plate as well as the many different pairings that go with each cheese, from savory to sweet, to wine, beer and drinks.

Cheese maker and entrepreneur Allison Hooper, co-founder of Vermont Butter and Cheese Company, was among the first artisan cheese makers in the United States. With co-founder Bob Reese, they brought the everyday cheese and dairy delicacy of France to the American table. Before starting that business in 1984, Allison was a dairy products quality technician with the Vermont Department of Agriculture. She began her career as a cheese-making apprentice in Brittany and Haute Alps while studying in France. Ms. Hooper has served on Boards of Directors for the Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund, as well as the Vermont Fresh Network, an organization that promotes local, sustainable food distribution through farmer to chef partner-ships. Allison and her partner, Bob Reese, were awarded Vermont Small Business Persons of the Year in 1996. She has worked for Land O’ Lakes International Development to revitalize domestic cheese making in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. She is the founding President of the Vermont Cheese Council and was President of the American Cheese Society from 2007 through 2009.

Allison and her husband Don live on a farm in Brookfield, Vermont, where the creamery originally started with their three sons, Miles, Sam, and Jay.

Fundraiser for Dorset PlayersThe Dorset Players invite you to the Dorset Playhouse on April 23

at 7:30 p.m. for a fundraising evening of stories and slides by our own Dom Degnon, who circumnavigated the globe in a small schooner some years ago. Entitled “Adrift on a Sea of Stories: Around the World in Seven Years,” it promises to be quite an event, especially for those of us who have trouble navigating our way around the Northshire.

In addition to his work with the Players, Dom is a former Coast Guard officer and school teacher. A graduate of Wesleyan University and Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf School of English, he has written extensively for Cruising World, Ocean Navigator, and Sail, as well as for magazines in Australia.

Over the past several years, Dom has given similar slide/lecture pre-sentations across the United States. farms and animals? Then mark your calendars for the 18th Annual Washington County, New York, Farm and Fiber Tour, which will take place this year on 12 different farms across Washington County, April 24 and 25.

The event is free and open to the public and will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The Farm and Fiber Tour, and most events at the individual farms, will take place rain or shine - so dress for the weather. Washington County is an easy hour’s drive from Albany, Saratoga Springs and southern Vermont; and only half a day from New York City, Rochester, and Boston.

Farmers across the county will open their barns, fields, and shops to allow visitors of all ages to meet their sheep and lambs, alpacas, llamas, and rabbits. Join them to learn about breeding and raising fiber animals including shearing and fiber processing. Some farmers will also demon-strate how they spin, dye, felt or weave with their animals’ fibers.

Visitors can purchase beautiful fiber products at the farms including soft shorn fleeces, roving for spinning, yarn and supplies for knitting and crocheting, fiber carding and spinning equipment, and handmade items such as felted scarves and knitted socks. Cooked lamb will be available for tasting. In addition, some of the participating farms will offer other activities such as fun projects for kids, tips for evaluating and selecting fleeces for fiber projects, needle felting workshops, and drop spindle spinning instruction.

BBA Book Drive for Tanzania, Thailand and Haiti

The Burr and Burton Academy “Book Drive for Tanzania, Thailand and Haiti” Service Learning Project is collecting children’s books. Please donate new or gently used children’s books and/or school supplies by placing them in the following drop boxes: Burr and Burton Library, Dorset School, First Congregational Church of Manchester, Maple Street School, Mark Skinner Library, Long Trail School, Floodbrook School, Shaw’s Supermarket, the Dorset Library, the Dorset Post Office and Israel Congregation of Manchester.

Monetary donations are also accepted and checks can be made out to Burr and Burton Academy with “Book Drive for Africa” in the memo. Monetary donations will be used to help purchase books or support shipping costs.

Past Book Drives have helped schoolchildren in South Africa and Namibia to be able to establish libraries in their hometowns. Komen VT-NH Race for the Cure Announces 2010 Grants

Thanks to funds raised at the 2009 Susan G. Komen Vermont-New Hampshire Race for the Cure®, and other monies raised throughout the year, the Vermont-New Hampshire Affiliate of Susan G. Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement.

Joy Stewart, a math teacher at Maple Street School, has been weav-ing baskets for 15 years. She enjoys sharing the craft with others and maintains that basket weaving can be appreciated by people of all ages. In this workshop she will guide us in making a large tote basket with a braided seagrass handle. The workshop is fun and you go home with a beautiful creation. Fifteen new companies joined the camaraderie of Vermont wood-workers at the 2009 event. Will you be the next new exhibitor? The VWMA plans to bring new aspects once again so that our return attendees will make this their fall foliage destination for another year! The bi-annual Vermont Fine Furniture & Wood Products Design Competition will be hosted at the 2010 Festival. Woodworkers will display their finest work for judging by industry professionals and the public.

Last year the Barnard General Store was brought on to provide local food to fuel the hungry shoppers. The annual student design compe-tition and awards ceremony was hosted at the Festival encouraging Vermont high school students to submit their woodworking entries and to be able to network with the state’s professional woodworkers.

As always the VWMA will partner with Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Historical Park for their annual Forest Festival Weekend. The Park will host woodworking and sawmill demonstrations, forest walks, educational activities, and events for the whole family. Handmade BooksGreen Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning is offering two

workshops on the Introduction to Handmade Books with collage artist Jane Davies. Handmade books offer a wealth of possibilities for creative expression, combining visual content with text and structure. Or you can simply make a beautiful blank book to use as a journal or album. In this pair of workshops we will learn two of the simplest, and yet most versatile, methods of constructing books: pamphlet stitch and accordion fold.

On Saturday, May 1 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., we will make a Hardcover Pamphlet Book with lots of pages using the basic pamphlet stitch. This method of book binding is accessible to the novice, and yet produces a substantial, sturdy book that will last a lifetime. Use it as a journal, a sketchbook, or a photo album, or give it as a very special personalized gift.

On Saturday, May 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the workshop will explore the Accordion Fold Book and Beyond. The accordion is prob-ably the most widely used structure for a fold book, and it is no wonder. This technique is easy, endlessly variable, and can be easily combined with other book structures. We will learn the basics of the accordion book, with several variations, and then begin to work on a special type of accordion called a “panel book”. At the end of the workshop you will have several accordion books, as well as several pages of your panel book.

All materials and tools will be provided, however scissors and a ruler will be helpful. If you have decorative paper you would like to use for your book cover, feel free to bring that as well. The cost for each work-shop is $48. Sign up for one or both!

VRP Receives Stratton GrantThe Stratton Foundation has awarded Vermont Reading Partners a

grant to purchase supplies necessary for “hands-on” learning techniques. These supplies or “tools” may be as basic as scissors, glue, and colored markers, but they provide countless opportunities for VRP tutors to create fun and interesting ways for their students to learn to read and write. With this grant, VRP will be able to purchase enough supplies so that all School Program tutors can customize their “tool boxes” accord-ing to the specific needs and interests of each of their students. Students in the program range from Pre-K through sixth grade, and their needs and interests are just as diverse. VRP would like to thank the Stratton Foundation for understanding the needs for “hands-on” learning tools and for their continuing support of literacy and VRP.

Emma LeMay of Maple Street School Named GeoBee Semifinalist

Emma LeMay, 6th grade student at Maple Street School qualified as a semifinalists for the 2010 Vermont Geographic Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek. National Geographic Society Bees were held in schools with fourth through eighth grade students throughout the state to determine each school’s GeoBee winner. Emma LeMay won the Maple Street competition in November 2009. She then took a qualify-ing test, which earned her entrance to the state competition. National Geographic Society has invited students with the top 100 scores to compete at the state level.

The state winner will receive $100, the “National Geographic Collegiate Atlas of the World,” and a trip to Washington, D.C. where he/she will represent Vermont in the national finals in May.

Grace Cottage Offers Arthritis Self-Help Class

Grace Cottage Hospital will offer the Arthritis Foundation’s Self-Help Program for six Tuesdays, April 27 to June 1, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m., in the Holt Conference Room of the hospital’s Community Wellness Center, 133 Grafton Road (Route 35).

The class focuses on how to manage arthritis and lead a more active, fulfilling life. The highly-effective program was developed at Stanford University in 1979 for people with all types of arthritis and related con-ditions, including fibromyalgia. Family, friends, and caregivers can also benefit from the training.

Research has shown that attending this program can decrease one’s arthritis pain by 20 percent. Participants find that they can increase their level of activity and thus enjoy their lives more. Grace Cottage Hospital physical therapist Sindy Hassig, a certified Arthritis Foundation leader, will conduct the program.

Through engaging group discussion and easy-to-understand course materials, participants learn about joint anatomy and joint protection, as well as the importance of exercise, weight control, nutrition, stress reduction, relaxation, taking medications properly, and better commu-nication with doctors.

The class is free, but there is a $25 fee to cover the cost of the work-book (scholarships are available).

This 5K race begins at 10 a.m., and features a flat and fast out-and-back course. All pre-registrants will receive a commemorative tee-shirt and post race refreshments featuring coffee, bananas, homemade cookies and Phil’s “Almost Famous Five-Alarm Chili.”

Awards will be given to the first three males and females overall, as well as to the first three in each of eleven age divisions. Entry fee is $15 pre-race, and $20 on the day of the race. For further information, please call Phil at 518-232-7040.

Bart Center Receives Stratton GrantThe Bart Center would like to give a special thank you to the Stratton

Foundation for supporting the Bart J. Ruggiere Adaptive Sports Center during the winter ski season of 2009-2010.

With the grant from the Stratton Foundation they were able to offer scholarships to some area people who have a disability, and enabled them the opportunity to enjoy the ski program.

The Bart Center offers skiing and snowboarding to people of all ages and all disabilities. With the help of the Stratton Foundation it made it possible for some deserving young people to get out and have a lot of fun during the winter. Thanks Stratton Foundation.

Trudy is a 3 year old torti. She was a stray who was brought to SCAC to find a home of her own. Trudy is outgoing, friendly and affectionate. She loves attention and she likes to be held. She will make a wonderful companion.

Pupo is a three year old Husky-Labrador Retriever mix who came to Second Chance because he and his doggy-sib-ling killed the neighbor’s fowl, repeatedly, and it became quite an issue between the families. At first, Pupo had no interest in hunting, but Zeus taught his younger brother how much fun it was. Pupo is a mellow guy, for his breed mix, and will require a weight loss management plan in order for him to become his healthiest. He has a beautiful and thick coat that will need a lot of

grooming and maintenance. We recommend a home with chil-dren seven years and older. Other dogs may be possible upon intro-duction, but we do not, however, recommend a home with cats. If you are looking for a big baby to cuddle and play with, then come meet our hungry Pupo!

Cookies & Cream is 2 years old. Her previous owner died and the family she was living with was very active and it was too much for her. Cookies & Cream is shy at first introduction but comes out of her shell once she knows you. She is affectionate and likes attention on her terms. Please come see our magnificent girl.

Weston Playhouse Holds Auditions for Local Youth

The Weston Playhouse is holding auditions on April 24 for a Vermont youth to participate in its summer Young Company production of “Seussical” by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty.

“Seussical” is a Broadway musical based on the children’s stories of Dr. Seuss and featuring such beloved characters as the Cat in the Hat, Horton and Mayzie. Weston is performing the 1-hour version for young audiences with its 7-member Young Company of undergraduate musical theatre majors at the Weston Rod and Gun Club and on tour to surrounding communities.

The theatre seeks a boy or girl of any ethnicity, age 9 to 11, to play the role of JoJo. S/he should be open, outgoing, energetic, imaginative and inventive, with a tender, strong voice (range Ab to C). Preference will be given to candidates with previous acting experience and real movement ability.

Auditions with director/choreographer David Marquez and music director Jon Balcourt will be held at the Weston Rod and Gun Club, 982 Route 100, on Saturday, April 24 at 10 a.m. Auditionees will be asked to sing, read and move. They should bring music for a song they already know and should prepare a portion of the song “Alone in the Universe,” available at www.westonplayhouse.org by clicking “About Us” and “Employment” or by calling the WPTC offices at 802-824-8167 x101 to request a fax copy. Candidates should also bring a recent photo and a list of performance credits.

‘Damn Yankees’ Musical to be Batted Around in Rutland

Weston Playhouse Theatre Company Producing Director Steve Stettler will provide a behind the scenes look at the history of “Damn Yankees,” and this summer’s Weston production of this long-living hit, at the Book King in Rutland on Friday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. It is the fifth of seven Stage Door Series events connected to this year’s WPTC MainStage and OtherStages productions.

Set during the 1950s in Washington, D.C. at a time when the New York Yankees dominated major league baseball, the musical is based on Wallop’s novel, “The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant.” Filled with song and dance hits like “Heart,” “Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, MO” and “Whatever Lola Wants,” “Damn Yankees” helped catapult Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon to stardom.

The April 23 event is sponsored by the Book King. Participants can sing along to the memorable songs and will enjoy reading excerpts from the script. The event is free and reservations are not necessary.
