VEREENIGING. - General Smuts High School has once again shown irrepressible spirit on the grand- stands at the annual Vereeniging/ Meyerton Interhoër athletics mee- ting where they won both the Best Cheerleader and Best Team Spirit trophies. They also won the Spirit Trophy at the English Interhigh meeting. As co-ordinator Mrs Aletha de Klerk said: “The ‘cherry’ of winning was a bonus; the ‘cake’ of enjoying the day was what it was really all about for Smuts. You don’t have to wear a cape to be a hero, just a Smutsie blazer!” The theme this year was “Heroes”. The 200 spectators’ spirits were buoyed by the love and respect for their very own hero, Mr Ronald Bar- tie, who has been headmaster of the school since 1995. His outstanding leadership, dedi- cation and inspiration will be sorely missed after he retires at the end of April this year. The entire performance on the stand was dedicated to him, and there was not a dry eye in the house as the banner bearing his photograph un- furled across the stand to the tune of “You Raise me up” during the ope- ning sequence. There was not a moment of quiet throughout day, with colourful dis- plays of cloth, shakers, pompoms, drums and cheering. Cheerleading has become integral to the educational extramural pro- gramme and continues to shape lea- ders by providing opportunities for the learners to practise discipline, team participation and tenacity. VANDERBIJLPARK. - Renowned playwriteand theatre-practitioner Gamakhulu Diniso re-cently joined the Vaal University of Technolo-gy.The initiative was by a post-graduate Nku-
luleko Khumalo, a Virtual Art artist. The pri-mary reason for the relationship is to show oldveterans, learners and young artists the art in-dustry as it is now.On Tuesday morning a group of first and
second year Virtual Art students visited DinisoArt Studios - based in his Bedworth Park ho-me. Three-piece plays were presented by the
veteran.Diniso lectured about the industry and
how he ended up in theatre while he wasa drawing artist. “I fell in love with art atan early age and I pushed my way up tocreate my name. Art is life,” said Diniso af-ter his performance.Students were fascinated by Diniso’s
work of the 60s to today. The veteran stillkeeps his masterpieces, having faith thatthey would become more viable. Khumalosays it’s a great pleasure to work with such
an open-minded person who is willing to helpand has shown his experience. “I created thissmall theatre because I was tired of being tos-sed up and down for bookings with local thea-
tres that are turned into funeral venues whileartists don’t enjoy the privilege of workingon them. I turned my garage into a theatre. The vision is very wild. I still have a lot todo,”says Diniso.

VEREENIGING. - For the past 14 years GeneralSmuts High School has become synonymous withcheerleading excellence, winning the Best Cheerlea-ders and Best Team Spirit trophies. This is the result of the scholars’ hard work and
dedication, but there is one person in particular be-hind the scenes who deserves more than a pat on theback. Eighteen years ago Aletha de Klerk, anAfrikaans teacher at Smuts, identified anacute need for mass participation at sportevents. With this in mind the school’sSpectators Group was born. This chan-ged the landscape of Inter High SchoolAthletics forever.Every year Smuts set the bar and, in
the bids to unthrone them, somethingspecial has developed.“My dream has come true. All the other
schools’ spectators and cheerleaders tack-le their task on the main stand with equalenthusiasm,” said de Klerk. The themethis year wasHeroes. The 200 specta-tors’ spirits were buoyed by the loveand respect for their very own hero,Mr Ronald Bartie, who has been he-admaster of the school since 1995.To make this year’s win even moreemotionally charged is the fact thatAletha has decided to hand over thereigns after 18 years.

SEBOKENG. - For things to end well, theyshould be prayed for in the beginning. This was the message when all uniformed
police officials began the year with a power-ful prayer session. The prayer session
was recently held bythe Vaal Rand Fly-ing Squad in con-junction with Mid-vaal Local Munici-pality at the SaulTsotetsi Sports Com-plex in Zone 14.Members of thecommunity were al-so in attendance, in-cluding officials ofvarious local munici-palities, pastors fromdifferent congrega-tions such as PastorPheto, Pastor Lon-don, Pastor Seketeand PastorMalete, aswell as Poet DonMatera. The session was
held to pray againstnegativity and to alsobuild relationshipsbetween the commu-nity and the peoplethat serve them.In his speech, Col-
onel Mcedisi Mabalastated that it was cru-cial for the commu-nity to support themen and women inuniform.“We need you as
the community, be-cause without you,we cannot do much.Your prayers arevery powerful andhold the power toheal the South Afri-can Police.
“We need yoursupport and not yourcriticism.” he said. The event contin-
ued with praise andsongs. The pastors
were invited to share the word of the day fromMatthew 11:28: Come to me all of you whoare tired of carrying heavy loads and I willgive you rest. The advice commonly sharedby almost all the speakers was that prayer isvery important in everything one does.

The newLexusNXhas arrived.
Lifestyle Release:ThePower of DesignLast year Lexus unveiled the LF-NX, a distinctive, compact crossover concept car that hinted at thebrand’s potential drive into the crossover SUV market. Its profile was aggressive. Its motifs were bold andmuscular. But it was also refined and athletic. One de-signer referred to it as “a lightweight fighter” – the kindof vehicle that combines strength and power with agil-ity and finesse.
Concept cars are often one-off affairs. They’re experi-mental and progressive, indicative of a marque’s tech-nical prowess. Few conceptual design elements evermake it onto a vehicle produced for the mass market. But the Lexus NX, the LF-NX’s production-ready suc-cessor, is different. Admittedly, it has a more measuredlook than its predecessor and its innovative LED head-lights and mirrors have been enlarged for practicalreasons. But otherwise, the evolution has been linearand smooth. Sophistication has been retained, as havemany of the SUV’s original design traits: the sculptedfront end with prominent spindle grille, the bulging rearfenders, those powerfully protruding wheel flares, thatimpressive body rigidity.
A roofline peak towards the back of the vehicle pro-vides ample headroom and accentuates the side pro-file, creating a tight silhouette. Brazen, flared wheelarches house 17- or 18-inch wheels (model depen-dant) that set the vehicle in a crouching, muscularstance. The rear is punctuated by Lexus’ signature ‘L’shape combination lamps, each with seamless LEDlighting, while the bodywork echoes the spindle grilledesign at the front.
An innovative outer mirror andworld-first door handle
mechanism (with hidden keybarrel and integrated lighting) add
to the luxury appearance. The interior of the NX directly evokes the premium, ur-ban feel of the vehicle, combining the structural beautyof a high-performance machine with a material feel thatmaximises luxury and functionality.
A sliver of silver ‘beading’ is strongly embedded in theinstrument panel, symbolising the strength of the ve-hicle, and knee pads located on both sides of the framefirmly support the driver and passenger.
Cabin design prioritises seating and interior space. Thequilted pattern of the seats and varied pad thicknessexpress the crossover intention of the vehicle. The NXoffers best-in-class luggage load length and rear seatleg space thanks to the flat floor.
NX 200t
The new Lexus 2.0-liter turbo engine, the brand’s firstturbo petrol engine, was tested over one million kilome-tres of various, often harsh road conditions and environ-ments. With getting too technical, the 175 kW direct-in-jection turbo engine features the world-first combinationof a cylinder head with an integrated water-cooled ex-haust manifold and a twin scroll turbo charger. A new6-speed automatic transmission has been adopted tomatch the new turbo engine. It features new torque-demand control logic, which calculates required enginetorque to maximise the exhilaration of quick accelerationresponse and fuel efficiency. It pulls off the obligatory0-100km/h dash in 7,1 seconds.
Newly developed shock absorbers, capable of control-ling even the smallest micro-level fluctuations, contrib-utes to excellent handling stability and ride comfort.Additionally, the F-Sport features a new Adaptive Vari-able Suspension (AVS), capable of variable control in30 stages.
The NX employs specialised Lexusmanufacturing techniques such as bodyadhesives and laser-screw welding toimprove the rigidity of the suspensionsystem as well as the body, enhancing
overall driving performance.
In addition to the turbocharged NX 200t, Lexus hasalso released the NX 300h, a hybrid that comes witha damping-control system engineered to increase ridecomfort.
An array of innovative on-board technology comple-ments the vehicle. Just two examples are the newLexus Remote Touch Interface with a touch pad (EXand F-Sport) as well as the comprehensive Multi-infor-mation Display. Other niceties include a tyre pressuremonitoring system, a full suite of safety kit comprisingeight airbags, reverse monitor (EX and F-Sport), sun-roof (F-Sport) as well as gizmos such as a G sensorand boost meter (F-Sport).
The NX F-Sport version provides a more aggressiveand sportier design. F-Sport exclusive items include amesh spindle grille, new front lower bumper, turbine-in-spired, ‘burnt’ metallic alloy wheels, glossy black outermirrors, exclusive interior color options (Dark Rose),ornament panel and sport seats.
Prices range from R539 900 for the NX 200t E goingup to R659 900 for the F-Sport. The NX comes witha four-year / 100 000 km service plan (tailored to suiteach model).
