Pronominal Verbs in Preterit and Imperfect
The pronominal verbs in Spanish are those, which take the «se» affix, added to their bare infinitive: -ar, -er, and -ir. The «se» affix changes into «me», «te», «se» (singular & plural), «nos», «os» according to the personal pronoun to which it refers. Examples:
(yo) Me bañé. (yo) Me bañaba. (I took a bath. I used to take a bath.)
(tú) Te comiste una pizza. (tú) Te comías una pizza. (You ate a pizza. You used to eat a pizza.)
(ella) Se perfumó. (ella) Se perfumaba. (She perfumed herself. She used to perfume herself.)
(nosotros) Nos hablamos en español. (nosotros) Nos hablábamos en español. (We talked to each other in Spanish. We used to talk to each other in Spanish.)
(vosotros) No os comprendisteis. (vosotros) No os comprendíais. (You didn't understand each other. You didn't used to understand each other.)
(ellos) Se telefonearon. (ellos) Se telefoneaban. (They called each other. They used to call each other.)
* The verb «llamar» means «to call»; the verb «llamarse» means «to be named».
First «se» affix a) Reflexive «se»: The Subject works as the doer and the receiver of the action:
Ella se vistió. Ella se vestía.
Second «se» affixb) Reciprocal «se»: The action is reciprocal
María y yo nos hicimos favores. María y yo nos hacíamos favores.
Third «se» affixc) Third person (Indefinite) «se»: When people in general is meant; the
singular form of the verb is used since «se» can be replaced by «uno» = «one»
En Miami se condujo muy mal. En Miami se conducía muy mal.
