Large campus in Cork City! 71 bed rehabilitation unit. Primary care hub for
OTs/Physios south lee. Day hospital. Clinics; falls, memory. Ambulatory outreach team. Memory technology
resource centre. Memory café. Cork stroke support group. ESD. Etc etc etc………..
4 full time OTs. 71 beds. Including12 bed stroke
unit. Ratio of OT: patient,
1:18. No cover for annual
leave. Weekday service. No dedicated stroke
OT staffing.
85% of stroke survivors will have upper limb deficits (Stroke Association UK, 2016).
National Stroke Audit 2016 recommends 45 minutes of occupational therapy to be completed daily (Irish Heart Foundation).
Only 23% of stroke units actually achieve this. Importance of early functional mobilisation of
upper limb = neural pathways = functional return = >QoL (Bell et al., 2014).
Neuroplasity = repetition = recovery. However upper limb treatment accounts for 24%
of total OT time, (8 MINUTES per session!) (Serrada et al., 2016).
Understaffed service. Upper limb rehab
deprioritised! Upper limb rehab occurs
in context rather than focus.
Therapists practice differ!
Patient goal = mobility. Patients want to do more,
families want to be involved.
Our stroke therapy gym
1. Optimize occupational therapists treatment time.
2. Create a better experience for patients.
3. Offer individualized therapy programs.
4. Increase self-directed therapy on evenings and weekends: 7 day service?
