    2. ANALYSIS

    3. LG shipped 27 million units worldwide in Q1 2010. Shipments suffered in North America (18% share), as operators' interest in mid-tier messaging and touch-featurephone categories are partlybeing shifted to higher-ASP smartphones. In Western Europe (12%) and Latin America (17%), the vendor managed to raise performance. However, in all other regions, shipments came underpressure from increased competition. We believe LG has been suffering from "Cookie mania", as the firm has arguably been over-focusing on the wildly popular mid-range Cookie touchphone atthe expense of the other products across its range.

    4. RESEARCH IN MOTION entered the top five list during the quarter, shipping 10.6 million units worldwide for fourth position. The Blackberry maker had a strong showing in Latin America andWestern Europe, where shipments climbed 300% and 118% annually respectively. On the other hand, its North American shipments came under intense pressure, falling 4% annually, mainly as aresult of growing competition from rival Apple and Android products across across major US carriers. RIM still has a substandard touchphone portfolio and this is harming its position in the US.

    5. SONY ERICSSON sold 11 million handsets worldwide in Q1 2010. It shed marketshare in all regions. The share losses in Western Europe, Central & Latin America and Asia Pacific are a littletroublesome, as the combined shipments from these regions contribute to over three-fourths of the vendors total volumes. Western European and Asia Pacific sales fell annually by 42% and 30%respectively. Meanwhile, Latin American shipments grew at only roughly half the pace of market growth. However, the downturn in global volume was offset by an upturn in value, with operatingprofit returning to positive territory for the first time in almost 2 years due to tighter cost-controls.

    6. APPLE shipped 8.8 million units worldwide in Q1 2010. At 132% annual growth, Apple was the second fastest growing top-ten vendor after Alcatel (195% YoY). Apple continued to gain shareacross all regions worldwide due to an improved retail presence. Asia Pacific remains a strong performer for the vendor. Shipments rose notably in South Korea, Japan and China. In WesternEurope, Apple continues to benefit from the broader distribution it attained with the loss of iPhone exclusivity in countries such as the UK and France. In North America, Apple's marketshare hasreached a plateau of 7% for three straight quarters, and it will need to move beyond AT&T and go multi-carrier if it wishes to grow further.

    7. ZTE slipped two places from last quarter to seventh position, shipping 9 million units worldwide for a 3% marketshare in Q1 2010. Regionally, Asia Pacific, Africa and Latin America are thebiggest volume contributors for ZTE. In terms of distribution, ZTE relies on operator channels, such as Orange and Vodafone, for a large chunk of its shipments. Device-portfolio-wise, ZTEsstrength is mainly in the growing ultra-low-cost candybar segment, but it is gradually upscaling to include slate touchphones and smartphones this year.

More analysis about ZTE's and Huawei's handset strategies can be downloaded in this published report.

    8. MOTOROLA slipped to eighth position in the global vendor rankings, shipping 9 million units in Q1 2010. Like Sony Ericsson, Motorola has been switching its focus more to value than volume. AsMotorola accelerates its high-end smartphone efforts with more Android-based launches, this approach will solidify profits but its marketshare will dip further this year. In Motorola's revised strategy,North America (11% share), South America (6%), China (3%) and South Korea (2%) are its primary geographies.

    9. HUAWEI sold 6 million units worldwide in Q1 2010. While Huawei has slipped three places in terms of rankings, we expect the vendor to regain importance later this year as it attacks thesmartphone segment. A slew of cost-competitive mid-range Android smartphone models from Huawei slated to launch in coming quarters will strengthen Huaweis position as a value partner withtheir existing operator customers such as T-Mobile. Huawei's main regions for shipments remain Asia, Africa and South America.

More analysis about Huawei's and ZTE's handset distribution strategies can be viewed in our regular published BLOGS from the Wireless Device Strategies (WDS) team.

    10. TCL-ALCATEL is quietly establishing itself as the third major Chinese-led handset player after ZTE and Huawei. Alcatel has had a rollercoaster past, with various booms and busts during the1990s and 2000s, but Alcatel has entered the 2010s under Chinese ownership and it is surging at a huge annual growth rate of 195% in Q1 2010, making Alcatel the fastest growing brand amongthe world's top ten players. Alcatel has adopted a volume-first approach, shipping 6 million units at a very low ASP well under US$50 wholesale. Alcatel's marketshare is expanding rapidly in Latin

America and Africa, due to new models such as the OT-106 candybar capturing shelfshare at open retailers. Alcatel is now the number three vendor in Africa Middle East, outselling LG with a 5%share. Alcatel unveiled a huge number of new models in February 2010, such as the OT-255 QWERTY phone, and this should enable Alcatel to continue its upward trajectory in the comingmonths, but whether they can sustain that momentum remains an open question.

    METHODOLOGY :

Strategy Analytics acquires both supply-side and demand-side inputs to validate our analyst perspectives and update existing database entries. We use afrom previous electronic industry product / service lifecycles as a guideline. We use end-user research where appropriate and apply fundamental strmapping tools and expert opinion to derive timely, defensible conclusions.

Key supply-side inputs for vendor regional estimates were device vendors, carriers and enabling-technology suppliers, who provided either historicalguidance on estimates or partial guidance.

Historical handset sell-in is provided from Strategy Analytics' archived estimates, with inputs from device vendors, OEMs, third-party research sourceenabling-technology suppliers.
