Once again, another Legion year has passed and we welcome in our new administration for the 2019-2020 year. Many thanks to the very few who showed up to vote. Rich Schweiss will be the new Commander, with Dax Carlisle remaining in the Vice Commander position. A huge welcome to our new administration. I hope everyone continues to support our new officers. The officer installation ceremony and dinner will be held Saturday June 8th at 5:00 pm. The dinner will be roast beef for $10.00. All are welcome to attend. A huge thank you goes out to the outgoing officers for all they have done for Post 36 in the past year. Steve Sperl (2 consecutive terms) and his administration have worked tirelessly to perform the duties bestowed upon them. Thank you Ladies and Gentlemen. The Centennial Celebration held May 11th was a great success. It was a huge project to undertake and without the diligence of Chairperson Steve Sperl and a great many volunteers, this event would not have been the success that it was. For those of you that did not attend, you missed a great time. We will be having our annual Flag Retirement Ceremony on Thursday June 13th at 6:00 pm here at the Post. Please try to attend this most solemn ceremony. On Wednesday the 12th, we will be hosting another blood drive for the Red Cross. This community is in the midst of a severe blood shortage and relies on the citizens here to help save lives. Please come out and donate blood if you can. As the desert heat begins to ramp up, I welcome all of our members and guests to stop down to your Post and enjoy the brotherhood, the food, the entertainment and the refreshments that our volunteers and staff so tirelessly provide for our Veterans and their families. It is a friendly and warm environment that all of us strive to create. For God and Country, Kevin J. Smith

Commander’s Message The election was a success, and your New Commander Elect is Rich

Schweiss. Dax Carlisle will be appointed as the Vice Commander; George

Batty will be the 2nd

Vice Commander, Chris Caylor will be our new Finance

Officer; Al Young will remain as our Sgt at Arms, Steve Motherwell will be

our new Judge Advocate; Kevin Roehl will be our Service Officer; and Fred

Worthington will be our Two Year Executive Board member. Please

congratulate all of our new Officers when you see them. Rich will appoint a

couple of vacant positions when he takes office, please let him know if you

are interested in doing more for the Post. The 100 year Centennial Celebration was hosted by The American

Legion District 2 and in the committee’s opinion and mine was a great

success. Thank you to all that assisted in planning, attended or both. There

was a great showing from 36. An event that the Post is stepping up to host, is the 40 et 8’s Grand

Cheminot and Wreck. It is a three day event, Friday, Saturday and Sunday,

July 12-14 2019. We will have a hundred or so people visiting our Post. As

always, let’s be gracious hosts. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your Commander for

the last two years. It sure was a bitter sweet election day. I will miss it. As I

write my last article as your Commander, I must reassure you I will not be

leaving the Post at all. I will mentor Rich every step of the way. In fact I will

be even more involved. I wanted to wait to write this article until the evening

of May 19th, 2019. The reason being the District 2 elections have taken place

and I have been elected to be your District 2 Commander. I can’t wait to start

working for you at the district level. I will expect that Post 36 will continue to

strive and lead from the front, and help the rest of the Posts follow. Debbie is no longer with American Legion Post 36, she chose not to

sign the Post required contract. With that being said, the Post E-Board had

made a decision to advertise for a new Cook, effective immediately. Please

see the next page for a Job Advertisement. If interested please contact myself

or Rich Schweiss. Thank you allowing and trusting in me to be your Commander. For God and Country Steven C. Sperl Commander

What a great year we have had! Before I begin I would like to say good bye to those who have passed this year, God bless them as I know they will be looking down on us. I would to thank all the people that have volunteered and donated so many hours to our many programs, without you all we could make our events and dinners happen. Once again we had a great year and welcomed in quite a few new ladies, which is awesome. We did so many great things this year and I can’t wait to see what this upcoming year will bring. American Legion Riders

Well, this is my time to say Good Bye as your American Legion Rider President and introduce you to the new ALR 36 Officers. Though I am writing this article prior to our election, we have no contested positions in our race. For your new Rider President we have Gary Evans. Many of our members know Gary, as he has been my ALR 36 2nd Vice for the past two years and is currently the Post Adjutant. Joining Gary as 1st Vice will be Dave Harding. Dave has been my communications officer and has done a fantastic job in that position. The rest of the current Eboard will remain the same; Bill Wood as Secretary, Mike Cummings as Treasurer (CFO), Matt Wolf as Sergeant at Arms, Nancy Gilliam as Chaplain, and Dusty Wymer as Road Captain. They have all done an awesome job for me and I am sure they will continue to do so for Gary. For our Secondary Officers we have; Dave Lillie moving into 2nd Vice to handle our membership, Trina Owens as Communications Officer, Marcia Bracken as Historian, Lauree Lillie as Quartermaster, and Dusty will announce his Road Lieutenants after the election. Let us show them a warm welcome along with the support and respect that I have been shown as the ALR President. I will hopefully be moving on to another position, as I am running for the ALR District 2 Representative position. This election will be held at our annual meeting at Convention in Phoenix. I am not leaving the Post and will continue to be a fixture around the building. I want to thank all of our members for supporting me in my role as ARL President. I especially want to thank Al Young and BJ Thompkins for introducing us and bringing us into the American Legion Family. It has been, and will continue to be, a great part of my life. I also want to thank Commander Steve Sperl and Commander Joe Roberts for mentoring me in the operations and history of the American Legion Family. Please wish me luck in the June elections at convention!!! Don “Duckie” Bracken President, ALR Post 36

S.A.L. COMMANDER

Hello again Legion Family. With this year just about over, I want to go over what we have coming up (as always) and a look back at the end. As of the writing of this article, our elections have not yet been held. But I would like to congratulate in advance those who have been elected. I know next year will be successful because we have a core of dedicated, motivated men who strive to be the best. And I know the members of Post, Unit, and Chapter 36 will support us as they always have. I want to again remind all of you about the 2019 Commander’s Tournament. It will be held Sunday, September 22 at Arizona National Golf Club. Contact information is on the S.A.L. board at the post. This is our largest fundraiser of the year, and I know we will be able to count on your support. We also have another golf tournament coming up much sooner. Our annual Freedom Tournament will be held July 7 at Rolling Hills. This is a really fun tournament and the cost is only $50/player. We use the modified Stableford rules, so it makes scoring a little different. Come out and try it, you’ll have a good time. Our regular S.A.L. burger night continues. We remain there on every Monday except the first Monday. Stop by and try one of our fresh, cooked to order burgers with your choice of cheeses. Business continues to grow and I want to thank all of you for that. Keep it coming! We are again participating in the Jim Click Millions for Tucson Raffle. For those who don’t know, we sell tickets and keep 100% of the proceeds for our charities. Don’t think of it as trying to win a prize, but think of the good work you are supporting whether you win or not. Charities such as The American Legion Child Welfare Foundation, Arizona Boys State, Arizona Girls State, Southern Arizona Book Heroes, and Fisher House just to name a few. That said, the prizes provided by Jim Click are pretty amazing. First prize is a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit, second prize is 2 first-class, round trip airfare tickets anywhere in the world, and third prize is $5,000 cash. Whatever your motivation, please see a Squadron 36 officer to purchase some tickets. The tickets are $25 each or 5 for $100. That will do it for this month. I want to end by saying thank you all again for the support you’ve shown me for the past two years as Squadron Commander. As I said at the beginning of this article, I am writing it before we have held our elections. Whether I continue as Commander or someone else takes the reins, I hope the support you have shown my officers and I for the past two years continues. We are a successful Post because of the respect and support we all show to each other, whether Legion, Auxiliary, Sons, or Riders. Let’s all keep that up. Thank you! Until next time…

For God and Country, Joe Roberts
