CUTCO® Cutlery is a high-quality line of kitchen cutlery, kitchen accessories, and sporting knives. CUTCO® has been manufactured in Olean, New York since 1949, and is the only high-quality cutlery line still made in the USA. Vector Marketing was founded in 1981 to be one of many independent

sellers of CUTCO®. From 1981 to 1984, Vector sold considerably more than all the other independent sellers, and is now the exclusive seller of CUTCO® Cutlery. In addition to the home office in Olean, New York, Vector has over 200 year-round, independently run locations throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Vector also has over 300 temporary locations that open each year for their peak summer season. They are one of PSE’s longest standing corporate partners, having been involved with the organization for the past 23 years.

Helen Brown is the Academic Outreach Manager with Vector Marketing. She has been with the company for over 23 years, beginning as a sales representative. Vector only promotes from within, and as such, Helen has risen through the ranks over the years from her days in sales. She began her current position over two and a half years ago. As the Academic Outreach Manager, Helen manages and develops all of Vector’s philanthropic endeavors, including working with Pi Sigma Epsilon.

When asked what it means to her to be a PSE corporate partner and to be able to work with the organization, she said that she loves the opportunity to meet and recruit some of the best college students in sales and marketing. In terms of the highlights of being a PSE partner, Helen says “First and foremost, the chance to meet the motivated and driven students that PSE

provides. Additionally, being able to benchmark with fellow recruiters that are looking for the same type of talent we are.” She also notes that “Vector loves working with PSE, and we make sure to use our #VectorLovesPSE hashtag whenever attending a Pi Sigma Epsilon event.”

The biggest challenge for Helen in her relationship with Pi Sigma Epsilon is “building the brand for Vector and for Cutco within PSE to get everyone to know about us.” It is always important to balance the rewards and challenges that the position brings. The key to this, according to Helen, is to take everything one step at a time. This includes being involved with regional conferences and the national convention, as well as everything else that Vector does with the organization.

In addition to helping both PSE and Vector Marketing, the relationship between the two has helped Helen professionally. She notes that “keeping in touch with what is happening both in the world of college recruiting as well as what is happening in the sales world” has been a large benefit to her. Furthermore, Helen has many positive memories associated with her involvement with Pi Sigma Epsilon. Her proudest moment has been Vector’s ongoing sponsorship of the PSE Pro-Am Sell-A-Thon®, stating that “seeing the students mock sell CUTCO® during the competition is always a highlight.” Vector has been a sponsor of the Pro-Am Sell-A-Thon® since 2003.

When not working, Helen’s favorite activity is traveling. France ranks high among her list of favorite destinations visited thus far, and she even has her own travel blog detailing her personal experiences, www.travelwithlaughter.com. The largest Regional ever!

Page 8: Vector Loves PSE - Pi Sigma Epsilon

The 2014 South Regional Conference showcased a very special keynote speaker that could relate to the students on every level. Katie Guasco graduated in 2007 from Louisiana State University with a Bachelors in Marketing and a Masters of Public Administration. “During college, I knew that

I liked marketing but not the concentrations that were offered at the time. I decided to join Pi Sigma Epsilon to see what they did. I remember my recruitment meeting like it was yesterday. A board member, Dennis Castillo, probably one of the best sales people I know, made me feel right at home and talked me into joining.”

As a member, Katie earned the position of Vice President of Service that utilized her skills in event planning. “It was a wonderful time for me as a student and a member of something so much bigger than a club. We were a small business and a well-oiled machine at that. Our strategic planning and annual reporting workshops were probably where I learned some of the biggest life skills I still use today.” She eventually became the Beta Xi President and under her leadership, they won 9 of the 13 awards they entered. “I realized then that leadership is one of the most exhausting and challenging choices that one can ever face, but it can also be very rewarding.”

Staying in the area, Katie completed an internship at New Orleans Convention Company and was hired as the Public Relations/Special Event Coordinator for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. She participated in event production, tourism development, organizing

room blocks, transportation, logistics, budget development, and complete post-event review and summary. After handling events for political figures and conventions for national associations, Katie was working for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank when Hurricane Katrina hit the coastal region. “It was like 5 years of PR experience overnight.”

With all of her experience, a former Pi Sigma Epsilon member recommended her in 2006 for her current position at Visit Baton Rouge. Katie assists with media relations and social efforts for large events such as Super Bowl XLVII, the taping of Antiques Roadshow, the live taping of “Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me,” Bayou Country Superfest, Miss USA, the US Region III Soccer Tournament, Fete Rouge and football season. “Management skills from PSE are what I primarily use as a foundation to be a respected leader in my organization and in the community including the media, stakeholders or our industry partners.” To Katie,

“management skills” aren’t solely related to overseeing her staff. “It’s how I manage my professional self, my demeanor, my communications, public speaking, etc. I learned a lot of that through PSE.”

In 2013, she earned the Travel Marketing Professional designation through Southeast Tourism Society and is a Certified Travel Industry Specialist. She is also the 2013-2015 President of Women In Media – Baton Rouge and was their 2010 Member of the Year. In her spare time, Katie enjoys traveling (of course), spending time with her

husband, Robert and two children, Grace and Max, and exploring the growth and vibrancy of Baton Rouge. Follow Katie on Twitter @VBR_KatieG.

National Conference in Sales Management

The National Conference in Sales Management (NCSM) is the premier international gathering of scholars and practitioners interested in personal selling, sales management research and teaching. The NCSM runs concurrently with the PSE National Convention and several attendees are PSE Faculty Advisors. This year, the NCSM celebrates its 30th Anniversary!

The conference will begin with a welcoming reception Wednesday evening. The first NCSM session will be held Thursday morning. The competitive sessions will consist of presentations of papers that were accepted following a double-blind review process. In addition, the conference will also consist of a variety of special sessions. The conference will end on Saturday at noon.

Panel discussions, sessions devoted to bringing together sales practitioners and researchers and discussions of sales research topics are a hallmark of the NCSM and will be held throughout the conference. Receptions on Wednesday and Thursday with another planned activity on Friday offer great networking opportunities.

For more information, go to: www.ncsmweb.com/

“The National Convention is a staple in being a member of PSE. It encompasses everything we believe in through professional development, workshops, and celebrating a great year with all the chapters’ successes. I would highly recommend any member of PSE to attend a national convention. It really changed my life as a member and gave me an edge when mentoring the future of my chapter.” -Lexi Wozny, Gamma Zeta

The University of Central Missouri held the State Farm Marketing and Sales Competition on November 7th. The competition was comprised of twenty-two hand-selected students from eleven schools (four having PSE chapters) of which two students represented each school. The sales competition participants were given two fifteen-minute rounds to sell State Farm auto insurance to fictional young adult buyers. For the marketing competition, teams of two were given twenty minutes to present a marketing plan on a specific topic and were judged on creativity, practicality of ideas, and presentation skills. Alex Woodruff, President of the Gamma chapter at the University of Georgia, won the sales competition. Congratulations Alex!
