Your select committee appointed bythis honorable Assembly to visit Alolokaiand report on the situation and conditionof the lepers at Kalawao as requested bythem in their petition to this honorableAssembly to appoint a committee of thir-teen

for that purpose beg leave to roportthat they started on their visit at 930 pin Friday July 16th on the steamerLikelike belonging to the Hon S G Wil-der

who in his usual generous mannerhad placed her at the disposal of thosewho wished to go

Your committee landed at Kalaupapa at7 am Saturday July 17th and werewarmly welcomed by tho Rev Father Damien the Catholic priest and introducedto a large number of the lepers who camothere

Your committee found the lepers in verycomfortable circumstances They allseemed to have plenty of horses and otherdomestic animals Their houses are com-fortable

and kept very neat and cleanand many were surrounded by beautifulgardens Their clothing was clean andof good quality Your committee foundthat there was apparently four classes ofpeople living at Kalaupapa and Kalawaoviz 1st The worst or most advancedcases 2d Those who are not quite sobad 3d Those who are only in the firststage of the disease 4th Those who arenot lepers at all In regard to the latteryour commitee in considering the largenumber at the settlement recommend thatthey be sent badk to the places from whencethey came where they will not be exposedto the risk of taking tne disease

In regard to the worst or most advancedcases your committee consider that it ismost improper for such cases to be al-

to live and mingle with those whohave not got the disease From theloathsome and frightful cases seen byyour committee anyone would be con-vinced

that it would be out of the question to think of granting some of the pe-titions

¬

sent to the Assembly praying thatthe lepers be allowed to return to theirhomes and be taken care of by theirfriends It is to be hoped that some ofthe new methods of treatment will makethe lepers more comfortable and that thedisease may be suppressed for a long timeIn regard to those patients where thedisease had not made much progressfor instance where the fingers were onlycramped the eyelids only effected themouth twisted withered hands or a swell-ing

of the face your committee feel thatmuch could be done for such cases

Your committee is satisfied that theBoard of Health is using its best efforts tohave the new Japanese treatment thoroughly tested for the benefit of snch casesas have been mentioned

ILr President At 10 oclockon Satur--day morning July 17th your committeeopened its inquisition in front of the officeof the Board of Health at Kalawao Afterthe President of the Board of Health hadmade a speech the committee heard thecomplaints and difficulties the lepers hadto present

The committee sum np as followsYour committee has carefully consideredall the complaints offered and also thestatements made in defense and has usedits utmost endeavors to arrive at thetruth in this matter After a careful ex-amination of all the facts your committeeare of the opinion that the greater part ofthe complaints arc untrue and are notsupported by the evidence and theytherefore will not take any snch complaints into further consideration

In addition to the complaints yourcommittee have considered the followingpetitions L To appoint a new Board ofHealth and do away with the present one2 To give the lepers fat beef 3 To Jaywater pipes to Kalaupapa 4 To have asteamer run there regularly 5 That theration of paiai be 30 pounds per week G

To send Dr Goto up there immediately7 To have two butcher shops one

the other at Kalaupapa 8 To dis-charge

Mr Myers and appoint a new Su-perintendent

Word arrived on Sunday week of thedeath of the venerable missionary Lyonsat Waimea Hawaii where his home hadbeen during the entire 5i years of hislabors in the Hawaiian Islands

Father Lyons was almost an ideal missionary and in many respects remarkablein character labors and experiences Hewas the last male survivor of the companyof missionaries who arrived in 1832 on theAverick Messrs Alexander and Lymanhaving preceded him in their departureby two years Every member of theearlier companies had gone before jlrLyons decease leaves Kev Dr LowellSmith of Honolulu the senior survivor ofthe old missionary companies Of theladies who came on the Averick MrsArmstrong Mrs Alexander Mrs Emer-son

late years and especially to the HawaiianDeople as the Haku JTdc or Bard of Hawaiithe composer of a multitude of hymnsand compiler of several sacred song andtune books which are in general use In1872 he published Bake Himeni Hawaiicontaining over 600 hymns two thirds hisown composition Some years lated heprepared the Sabbath School Hymn andTune Book Lei Alii published first byH M Whitney and now by the HawaiianBoard in gratitude for which the HawaiianChurches presented him with a spontan-eous

more acceptable The HawaiiaDs oweentirely to his exertions their introductionto modern enlivening styles of popularsacred music He expended much timeand labor in soliciting the privilege ofusing popular tunes from the holders ofcopyrights

With a high spiritual exaltation an en-

temperament and a rare facilityin versification Mr Lyons has producedperhaps 1500 hymns a large proportionof which are acceptable to HawaiiansMost of these are free versions of Englishpopular hymns as well those of theolder styles as those of the Sunday Schooland Gospel Hymn Books Few menhave ever reared for themselves so lastinga monument among their people

During his earlier missionary life MrLyons was eminent in evangelistic andrevival work like Father Coan of whomhe was a life long ally and intimate Itwas in Mr Lyons own field of Kohalaand Hamakua that the Great Awakeningof 1S37 8 began The sudden death ofMrs Lyons during the general meetingof 37 at Honolulu had intensified a pro-found

Billiard playing for Church Fairs and othercharitable purposes are of frequent occurrence infact the game is becoming to be recognized as theleading indoor amusement for both ladies andgentlemen These statements bring to the frontthe fact that Mr J F B McCleery and Mr B FSay lor both professional billiardists have had en-

with the best societies in Californiaand other cities in America to display their abil-ities

Billiards ExtraordinaryOn Friday evening Mr J F B McCleery of

San Francisco an expert billiard player gave anexhibition in this line in the Hawaiian Hotel din ¬

ing room An audience of about 152 was presentto witness the gentlemans skill in handling thocue Only three ladies availed themselves of theprivilege of being present Shortly after eightoclock Mr McCleery made his appearance in thehall and Mr Maurice Kahai a native Hawaiianamateur of repute was assigned to play with theprofessional The gam e was 1U0 points McCleeryto score this number in one inning or no countwhile Kahai was to aggregate 100 points

The first part of the game was not noted for anyextraordinary playing on either side the score forKahai varying from nve to twenty McCleery didnot apparently do much better On Kahais scor-ing

¬

SC McCleery took the cue making a run of 80and missed on the 81st stroke Kahai resumedand steadily added to his score until 99 was reachedwhen a miss gave the table to McCleery whoseomed cool and collected and immediately set towork to put things to rights by again getting theballs close to the cushion and manipulating themround the table scoring 100 points in this inningand winning the game by one point At the closeof the game McCleery was loudly applauded bythe audience many of whom were good amateurplayers Kahai also received hearty recognitionof his abilities

An intermission of ten minutes ensued afterwhich Mr McCleery favored the audience withwith a series of fancy shots which really was thebest part of the evenings amusements and show-ed

to advantage tne consumate skill of the playerTho balls weie were placed in all conceivable posi-tions

and the result predicted before hand withbut one filure Mr McCleery also illustratedthe Balk line game which was new to inanv ofthose present also tho base ball shot sendingone of tho balls to tho opposite end of the tableand causing it to fly up and back to the playerwho caught tho ball in his hand It would be im-possible

to enumerate all the difficult shots suc-cessfully

made by the champion of tho cue butenough has been said to satisfy the billiard lovingpublic that Mr McCleery is entitled to stand highamong billiard players

The table used on this occasion is a very hand ¬

some one made by the Balk Brunswick Co ofSan Francisco Cain and is furnished with thecelebrated Monarch cushions said to be the bestin nse

At 1030 the entertainment closed when the au-dience

The accessions of the library have been largerin number and of greater value than during anypreceding year as will be seen from the followingstatement

The Legislative Assembly has just inserted anitemofI200 in tho Appropriation bill for thepurchase of hooks for our library being the firstdirect grant of public money made to the Associa-tion

and establishing thereby a valuable precedentIt is believed that no one however economicallydisposed in the matter of publiq expenditure canhave any objection to the granting of a moderatesum of money in aid of an institution so distinctlyeducational and so eminently for the general goodas a well conducted library and reading room

Without going into details which though seem

ingly slight are in the aggregate important it maybe said that with respect to the arrangement andcare of the books the completeness and accuracyof tho records and the various details of adminis-tration

the library is in better condition than atany former period of its history

From February 1st to date eight months fiftytwo perhaps have signed the membership roll atour rooms Owing to the absence of dates on theold roll it is impossible to report the exact numberwho have joined daring the earlier part of theyear It must be remembered that many of thosewho put down their names are visitors or tempo-rary

residents whose term of membership is verytransient Add to this the inevitable loss of oldmembers from death removal and voluntary with¬

drawal and it will be found that our accessionsthough seemingly considerable are little morethan sufficient to make good our losses A com-plete

Overtures have been made on behalf of theorganization known as the Boys Reading Roomlooking to a winding up of the operations of thatsociety and the transfer of its effects to this Asso-ciation

Owing to the departuro of Mr C ABrown who represented the Boys Reading Roomin these negotiations no definite conclusion hasbeen yet arrived at It is the opinion of yourcommittee that an arrangement can be madewhich will be entirely fair and mutually advan-tageous

A Golden WeddingOn Fridiy last October 15th was the 50th anni ¬
