As one of Latin America's leading banking institutions, Banco Azteca serves 15 million customers and has 1,400 branches. To improve information security and streamline bank IT processes, Banco Azteca began an IT upgrade to adopt desktop virtualization with VMware View. With VMware View, it is possible to move proprietary data that traditionally is stored on desktops and laptops to a secure, central location. In addition virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) based on VMware View saves money and better supports mobile workers.In recent years, Banco Azteca pursued several VDI projects that were unsuccessful because of problems with vendor collaboration and technology integration. Issues integrating different servers, storage, virtualization and other pieces delayed VDI implementation.Recently, Banco Azteca reviewed VDI options again and initiated a competitive face‐off between VCE and another supplier, asking each company to deliver a pilot deployment to 500 users in less than two months. Even though the competition already had a two‐month lead, VCE agreed to participate.A VCE Professional Services team selected the Vblock platform and VMware View™ for the project, which included assessment, design, configuration and implementation. In the end, Banco Azteca selected VCE due to:The team's speed, quality and commitment to project success ‐‐ VCE Professional Services completed the pilot in only five weeks, while the competition was still developing its proof‐of‐concept after 10 weeksThe product's ability to scale up to 5,000 virtual desktops ‐‐ with the Vblock platform and VMware View, Banco Azteca will reach its goal of delivering thousands of virtual desktops far more quickly than it had expectedVCE's advanced VDI tools and converged architecture ‐‐ the VCE system is built around pre‐tested and pre‐integrated solutions, making it easy to optimize for the bank's desktop configuration requirementsBecause of the pilot's success, Banco Azteca has requested proposals for three additional Vblock Infrastructure Platforms ‐‐ two supporting operations outside of Mexico and one to support an additional 2,000 VDI seats in Mexico."At VCE, we're 100% committed to customer success," said Tim Page, SVP Global Sales at VCE. "We were confident in our capabilities, and proud that we delivered twice as quickly as the competition. We were able to quickly demonstrate how to transform IT infrastructure so that businesses can focus on what's most important ‐‐ growing their business.""A Vblock platform with VMware View™ is the foundation of our Desktop Virtualization deployment and the possibilities for future improvements are exciting," said Raul Hidalgo, Infrastructure Manager at Banco Azteca. "It will give us much more agility as we expand into new markets and offer new lines of business since less physical infrastructure will be required."

Email is a critical communication tool for modern businesses. It often serves not only as the mostefficient way to communicate globally, but also as a repository for business-critical data, processes, and strategies. All these combine to make email an indispensible part of daily business operations. Managing a company's growing email requirements without compromising on the performance, availability of valuable data, or service level agreement, presents a huge challenge for IT departments.

IT departments need an environment that provides them more flexibility and agility so that they quickly meet changing requirements from the business. Server resources are often underutilized and provisioning new servers to meet demands is typically a time‐consuming process.

Many organizations see a business need to allowing users to keep older email in their mailboxes for fast retrieval. This presents a challenge because having more emails in the messaging environment means that each user needs a larger mailbox. Larger mailboxes means that administrators need to allocate more storage to the users in order to satisfy these new business requirements, thereby increasing both capital and operational expenses.

IT professionals are looking for ways to manage the shift in storage requirements associated with a surge in Exchange data. As user mailboxes experience rapid growth, Exchange Server 2010 performance must be balanced with storage and compute power/capacity to achieve acceptable cost and performance metrics.

Enterprises require simplicity in the integration of Exchange Server 2010 into their existing data center infrastructures with limited production downtime and impact on other applications and services. They require a consistent deployment approach and seek to standardize their infrastructure.

VCE understands that customers want to drive costs down, increase IT efficiency and increase overall agility. Virtualization is a key enabler in achieving these objectives. This isn’t a new conversation per se but as the deployment of virtualization accelerates, it is important to get it “right.”

Enterprises require simplicity in the integration of Exchange Server 2010 in theirexisting data center infrastructures with no production downtime and impact on other applications and services. By adopting the Vblock platform design approach described in this brief, customers can:• Use a “building block” approach for server and storage design when implementing

Exchange Server 2010• Minimize the long‐term costs associated with large‐scale storage deployments through

Vblock platform provisioning and drive types with optimized cost/performance.• Improve overall email performance and productivity

Page 15: VCE-training-5.pdf

Key Differentiators

As enterprises migrate to virtualized environments for mailbox administration, a new solution is required to

manage larger mailbox sizes and number of users, while maintaining low per‐user mailbox costs. By using the

Vblock platform with Exchange Server 2010, several key differentiators can be realized when comparing a

virtualized Vblock platform environment to a physical environment. These include:

• A single, virtualized environment which provides optimization, flexibility and scalability for mailbox management

• The capability to rapidly provision new mailboxes using Unified Infrastructure Manager (UIM)

• Optimized cost/performance with seamless linear scalability.

• Test Components and Architecture

The test configuration used in this testing was designed to support two database copies for 20,000 very heavy

(defined by Microsoft as .18 OPS) Exchange users on a single Vblock Series 700. The test environment utilizes a

compute, SAN infrastructure, and vSphere virtual mailbox configuration, comprising four virtualized Exchange

servers housed on one physical blade.

This is a comprehensive but obviously not exhaustive list of key drivers for clients to move to Vblock Infrastructure Platforms. In the case of SAP clients their dependence on SAP running at its best is even greater.

SAP has validated SAP software on Vblock Infrastructure Platforms developed by Cisco, EMC and VMware. Vblock platforms combine computing architecture, networking, storage and virtualization infrastructure in pre‐integrated blocks. The validation initiative at a major  global retailer showed that SAP on Vblock platforms have the potential to deliver cloud‐like benefits including faster deployments, greater business agility and increased operational efficiency. By working together, these companies are providing an IT model that gives organizations more flexibility, control and security over their computing environments.

The global retailer saw a unique opportunity to work with SAP, Cisco, EMC, VMware and an integration team from the Accenture & Cisco Business Group to explore the potential benefits of running SAP software in a virtualized converged infrastructure environment.

The validation initiative showed that Vblock platforms can indeed result in faster IT deployments, greater IT flexibility and significant improvements in operational efficiency.
