This needs to be written before you commence the design process and placed at the front of your development folio. UNIT 3: choose something that allows you to make use of paraline and perspective drawing systems and orthogonal drawing conventions. Creating something new, redesigning or promoting an existing three-dimensional product are good choices. UNIT 4: Ensure you have a single client and 2 separate and distinctly different needs, different purposes or audiences (if appropriate), different intentions and different presentation formats. Constantly refer back to your BRIEF to make sure you don’t lose focus or direction. Use Visual Communication and Design Study Design language.

define communication need

Check out the diverse range of Unit 3 topics in the exhibition:

toasters, burger packaging,

architecture, glasses

Avoid using language from another study.

Areas such as Studio Art or Product Design & Technology have a

different language code.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Unit 3: Some schools provide students with a communication need, others ask students to write it as practice for Unit 4. Interesting topics this year in Top Designs, reflecting student's interests and concerns (Gay Straight Alliance, depression, blood donation), their city (ACCA, Arts Centre,) travels Berlin, popular culture: zines, skateboards, coffee, T-shirts, humour

Research for information and

ideas

This requires research skills of:

• Collection • Analysis • Interpretation of information Get to know your target audience, your client (or its competitors), existing products Use multiple sources! Gather inspiration from other designers, artists, nature, shopping… Interpret through sketches and annotations

Observational drawings are a requirement of Unit 3. • part of research: familiarize

yourself with the form and physical attributes of a similar existing object in space.

• OR can be introduced where it will better help you understand how light, shade, shadows, different media can effect a similar object/s.

TIP: Copying a photograph is just that - copying. It will contribute to research and skills building, it won’t score as drawing from observation.

Jessica Xuan Unit 3 Herbivores logo and burger box design

Raudie McLeod Unit 3 Toaster design

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Observational drawings provide the opportunity to really get to know the characteristics and features of existing objects and to build confidence in manual freehand drawing. It is important to draw from reality rather than photographs to enable you observe closely how the object functions and how it interacts with its context and user. It is also important that what you select to draw is directly related to your folio topic.

Hayley Morris Unit 3 Festival glasses

Hayley uses observational drawing to help her to understand how to represent glasses using different media and rendering techniques. At the same time, she is gaining an understanding of how glasses operate and how different styles are worn.

generate design ideas

How many drawing systems can you recognise?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Generating ideas starts with quick thumbnail drawings. Use drawing systems to aid visualisation of ideas. This folio makes excellent use of a range of drawing systems including isometric, oblique, perspective and orthogonal to explain a wide range of design ideas at both the generation and development stage. He then makes extensive use of computer to develop his design solutions and consider layout options for the final presentation.

Let your drawings tell the story of your journey.…

What do you notice about this orthogonal drawing?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
(student has labelled it as first angle, but its still not correct, as top is above side view rather than top below front view as it would be in first angle, she creates a correct third angle later on > hence its telling the story of her learning) Remember your developmental folio is a learning process! It is ok to make mistakes and show that you have learnt from that. Pages should be authentic, they do not need to be repeated, cut-up and rearranged. Time is precious, spend it extending or further resolving your ideas and concepts.
Page 18: VCAA Study Design Presentation: Visual Communication & Design · Use Visual Communication and Design Study Design language. define communication need Check out the diverse range of

3rd angle ORTHOGONAL drawing is a 2 dimensional drawing system. Each view is aligned, labeled below each view, and measurements positioned on dimension lines. The words ‘3rd angle orthogonal drawing or the appropriate internationally recognised symbol for 3rd angle drawing needs to be evident also. Non-aligned viewed drawings are actually explanatory diagrams, that is they explain information about an object, however, they do not meet the requirements of an orthogonal delineation.

2D drawing: Architectural drawing conventions

Harry Jess Unit 3 Mallee studio

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Note that the conventions for dimensioning, line widths and the labelling and layout of views when drawing architectural plans and elevations are different than in a Third Angle Orthogonal drawing. Harry has used these conventions with care, and also ensured that he has used a scale that is appropriate to his needs.

Harrison Jess Unit 3 Mallee studio

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Harry has also included the various stages of his drawings for the perspective views; the establishment of the vanishing points and horizon lines, and alternative compositions. This is important to demonstrate his thinking process and to assist with authenticating the work. Note also the use of rendering and trialling of alternatives.

Use of ICT to develop and refine concepts. Program used and process are documented and annotated for authentication purposes and to assist decision making

Raudie McLeod Unit 3 Toaster design

Note use of thinking routine PMI

(plus, minus, interesting) to evaluate concept

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Raudie ended up with quite a different final idea. Its important to develop a number of alternatives (at least two) in order to extend ideas and be able to score highly as criteria refers to development of a RANGE of concepts. Whilst printing costs are a significant issue for a number of students/ schools, regular prints to check for pixilation, composition, evaluate against brief is important

Presentation Notes
In Jessica’s annotations she clearly stipulates which design elements and principles, methods, media and materials she is using and how effective that has been. The use of study specific language in this way reinforces the use of these terms and how they differ from one another. Great preparation for the exam!

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Design processes for Presentation 1and 2 do not have to be of equal size, but there must be 2 clear processes and the second process must go in a new direction, not just applying the imagery or logo in a different format. The folios on display are all good examples of two separate processes, with ideas that are pushed, developed, with a wide range of alternatives considered.
