Prime Minister is expected to announce measures to help middle-income earners buy a house when the 2017 budget is unveiled on Oct 21. (Source: Bloomberg) Bank Negara governor calls for a new global operating landscape A new real economy calls for a new operating landscape. In the new real economy, value creation will no longer just be generated by traditional growth drivers, such as manufacturing and banking services. Instead, the new economy is likely to be characterised by digital technological gains of unprecedented scale, scope and speed, possibly akin to the industrial revolution the world experienced 200 years ago. (Source: StarBiz) Mustapa urges SMEs to register The international trade and industry ministry has urged all 3.2m (SMEs) in the country, which have yet to register their respective businesses, to do so to qualify for various assistances including capital loan to expand their business. By not registering their businesses with the Companies Commission of Malaysia, it had made it difficult for SME Corp to help them. (Source: Bernama) China's yuan sinks to six-year low after central bank drops midpoint China's yuan dipped to a 6 year low against the dollar on Monday, breaching a key psychological threshold after a week-long national holiday that saw offshore-traded yuan slump to 9 month lows. The fall in the value of the Chinese currency comes after the central bank announced late last week that its forex reserves dropped for a 3
rd month in September, by
more than expected, suggesting fresh capital outflows from the world's 2nd
largest economy. Pressure has also risen on the yuan as the USD has strengthened in global markets, most recently on the back of strong labour market data that supports a possible US interest rate hike later this year. (Source: Reuters) China unveils plans to cut corporate debt, to push debt-to-equity swaps China unveiled guidelines on Monday to reduce rising corporate debt levels which some analysts fear could destabilise the world's 2
nd largest economy. The government will take a multi-pronged approach to cutting company debt, including
encouraging mergers and acquisitions, bankruptcies, debt-to-equity swaps and debt securitisation, according to guidelines issued by State Council, or the cabinet. Corporate China sits on US$18trn in debt, equivalent to about 169% of GDP. (Source: Reuters)
