For some, a White Christmas conjures up images of picture perfect winter scenes, snowmen and blankets of twinkling white, while for others it spells transport delays and chilly inconvenience.

What are the chances of it being a white Christmas this year? From the look of this chart the odds are increasing each year! Here are a few snowy statistics for you courtesy of the Met Office...

Snowfall - the bigger the snowflake, the more stations across the UK that recorded snow falling during the 24 hours midnight to midnight on Christmas day.

• The UK gets on average 33 days of snow fall or sleet a year, most of which is snow falling on higher ground where temperatures are lower.

• Statistically, the snowiest place in the UK is Banffshire in Scotland, with 63.8 days of snow or sleet falling on average. The least likely to get snow is Cornwall, with an average of only 10.2 days of snow or sleet falling each year.

• On 25th September 1895 snow was reported to have fallen at London and Wallington in Surrey making it the earliest fall of snow on the capital.

• Believe it or not, on 2nd June 1975 snow showers forced the abandonment of several cricket matches across the country!

• The snowiest winter of the 20th century in the UK was 1947. Between 22nd January and 17th March snow fell every day somewhere in the country.

• Snow settling on the ground on Christmas Day - as we would expect from a typical Christmas scene - is very rare. There has only been a widespread covering of snow on the ground on Christmas morning four times in the last 51 years.

Supporting students globally comes naturally to LSBF and one good deed can change the life of thousands in another country. Recently, former student Isaac Gyimah dropped a line to Aaron to thank LSBF for its support and update him on his current activity.

Isaac was given a 100% scholarship for ACCA + MBA and later a part-time job with us as he was unable to afford the associated costs of living and studying in London. This small act of support has gone on to pay dividends as Isaac has since set up his own college in Ghana and is also now Director for Education in Ghana for ACCA.

We asked Isaac his views on LSBF and whether he would like to have an on-going relationship between his business and ours and he said, “Anything for Aaron, Valery and Max. Yahweh bless you guys! Whatever will work for the LSBF brand and recognition, I am happy to be part of it.”

This extremely positive comment shows exactly what we all strive to achieve daily – happy students that want to be a part of our success story into the future.

The relationship with Isaac is now set to continue as he wants his college to be a partner with InterActive so that his school can run the MBA and MSc online programmes in Ghana.

Well done Isaac!

At over 600 hours of intellectual work, the Masters dissertation is one of the most important projects of your life. It can also be the happiest, and a career-enhancing machine. Here are 5 do’s and 5 don’ts that will help things turn out the right way:

7/ 14

Do’s and don’ts for success in the dissertation process Courtesy of Dr. Steve Priddy, Head of Research LSBF

DO

• think from day one about the research topic you are going to pursue. Play with ideas in your notebook throughout Part One of the programme.

• try to be a good scholar. Really get into the academic universe, and learn to love the look and feel of peer reviewed articles.

• reference meticulously. The examiner will do a sample check that every in-text citation is supported by an entry in the list of references.

• formulate a research question that is answerable, and research objectives that are SMART. This will drive the rest of your work.

• enjoy the fieldwork – who knows who you might meet that will help you in the next stage of your career?

DON’T

• copy other peoples’ work. You will be cheating yourself in the end. It is most likely you will be discovered anyway.

• seek to explain the 2007 banking crisis – almost every economist in the world has had a go, and failed.

• use Internet sources without great care – the Web is a vandalised library and is, by itself, totally unreliable.

• ignore the word count. The examiner will fail material under-counts, as well as material over-counts. Aim for between 15,000 and 20,000 words.

• make it up. An excellent dissertation is one which is scrupulously honest, even where it exposes your limitations and shortcomings.

DEVELOPED BY A GROUP OF YOUNG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN PAKISTANAli Rehan, CEO of Eyedeus Labs explains: “You simply take two pictures, mark the photographer or photographers and let Groopic work its magic. It automatically turns the incomplete picture into one complete group picture.”

This month’s App was recommended by ACCA + MBA student, Rayed Rauf.

“While there may be other apps (more than 900,000) in the App Store that blend two images into one group photo, I’ve never seen one that’s quite as easy to use as Groopic.”

Jason Parker, http://reviews.cnet.com

“Its ingenious and easy enough to use that any of your moronic friends can work it.”

THE ECONOMIC PROSPECTSOF RUSSIA

12/ 14

SEZs are exempt from federal laws regarding taxes, quotas, FDI-bans, labour laws and other restrictive laws in order to make the goods manufactured in the SEZ at a globally competitive price. The SEZ provides special legal status and a set of customs and tax preferences to the investors.

Another step towards attracting investments is ensuring that all companies in Russia accept and adhere to International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

Companies are expected to comply with the rules and regulations of IFRS from 2015.

Nowadays local and international companies based in Russia look to employ highly professional personnel who will able to bring the appropriate knowledge and understanding of accounting, finance and auditing to their workplace as per international requirements.

Russia has a strong relationship with the EU - Europe is the largest investor in the Russian economy: accumulated investments amount to $277 billion, of which over $105 billion are direct investments.

The Special Economic Zones (SEZ) were set up by the Russian

government to expand growth and international interest in the emerging Russian economy. A Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is a geographical region that is designed to export goods and provide employment.

Traditionally, Russia has played a key-role in the world economy, as a country with a huge variety of natural resources and vast territory. Recent records showing Russia’s $3.4trn GDP make it the world’s 5th largest economy.
