PASTOR’S MESSAGE:

SAINT JOHN MISSION STATEMENT:

We are a community of faith that is: gathered for worship and fellowship, empowered by Scripture and the Sacraments, strengthened for service and sent forth as witnesses to the Good News of Jesus Christ.

THANK YOU to all who partici-pated in

our focus groups and THANK YOU to the Long Range Planning Team who implemented and led the groups. We have compiled a list of suggestions and will be following through, beginning Wednesday, September 30.

THANK YOU to those who

responded to our need for additional funds to offset the deficit. Some have increased their giving and others gave extra donations to the deficit reduction fund. GOOD NEWS – according to our treasurer we have caught up by almost 2% - however, with a few ex-ceptions, a good portion of that is from those who are

already our most generous givers.

YOUR IDE-AS ARE IM-PORTANT. We are al-ready imple-menting a few, and some are defi-

nitely worthy of imple-mentation. Some things are beyond our control, for example, when we re-quested a sign on Sunrise Highway it was denied by the Town of Hempstead, even though other church-es have such signs. If there is someone willing to pur-sue that again, please do so.

WE NEED VOLUN-TEERS TO PLAN AND

CARRY OUT YOUR IDE-AS. The relatively small group of people who are doing most of the work

now cannot be expected to add even more to their com-mitment of time, talent and treasure.

WE ARE ALL IN THIS

TOGETHER – “The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pas-tors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11-13 Attend regularly, give regularly – even a modest donation of $5 given every week would be a big help – and get involved. Why is Saint John important to you?

Tell your friends and neighbors, invite them to church and Sun-day school.

May God bless us in our endeavors together, Pastor Cline

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION WOMEN OF ST. JOHN

THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF SAINT JOHN PAGE 3

We are gearing up for the 2017-18 Sunday School year! The Christian Education staff met to go over curriculum and plan for the upcoming year and will be working to clean the classrooms to get them ready for our students’ return.

Rally Day is Sunday, September 10 this year. The classes will meet with their teachers to get acquainted and do a craft. The registration materials and Sunday

School calendar will be emailed to all parents, but will also be available on our website in September. The fee is $30 for each

child, with a family rate of $75 for three children or more. As always, if the tuition

is a hardship please speak with Pastor Privately.

Part of a thriving congregation includes people of all ages and children are always welcome during worship at Saint John. We encourage parents to bring their children to worship regularly as it is an important part of our church life and helps the lessons the children learn in Sunday School make sense to them.

We are always looking for volunteers to help with the Christian Education pro-gram. If you are interested in being a part of this very important ministry please see Jennifer Cline Sargent. We look forward to another great year of Sunday School at Saint John!

The next book club meeting will be in early October. The book will be The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeanette

Walls.

There will be more information to come soon regarding date, time and place. As always, a $2.00 donation will be collect-ed from attendees to support INN Cook-ing.

“God’s Work Our Hands”

This year “God’s Work Our Hands” Sunday falls on Sunday September, 10 which is also Rally Day and there is a council meeting. Since people can only be in one place at a time, we are going to move the service portion to Sunday September 24

which will be a clean up day here at Saint John. You can sign up for this on the sheet hanging in the Howe Room. We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Casual Attire

is recommended

We are in the un-fortunate position of starting off the fall with at $10, 953 deficit. The Long Range Planning committee has been

meeting regularly and has held several focus group meetings to engage all members of the congregation in com-ing up with new ways to improve our financial outlook. Some of the sugges-tions that grew out of the focus groups are already being done or starting soon. There will be an email going out to the congregation next week detailing these items.

The most important thing that any of us can do to support Saint John and our ability to continue with our im-portant ministries on a congregational, community and global level is to give consistently. Even a small amount given on a weekly basis helps in a big way. If you were away for the sum-mer and need to catch up on your weekly giving, now is the time.

Thank you to the members of the committee and to all of the people who attended the focus groups. Saint John can only thrive with the coopera-tion of all our members.

THE MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF SAINT JOHN PAGE 4

SOCIAL MINISTRY HAPPY NEW YEAR! I know, it's not Jan. 1st, but with most of us, Sept is a month of beginnings, isn't it?!

After the lazy, hazy days of summer, our alarm clocks and calendars begin to call our attention to schedules and responsibilities we may have put aside for the summer. Our Worship Service setting changes and our choir leads us in worship, our monthly meet-ings get into gear, not to mention, sending the kids off to Sunday and regular school! As the days get shorter, we begin putting away sleeveless tops and bathing suits and pull out sweaters and closed shoes. But before we jump into Autumn, I'd like to give thanks for the 129lbs of food donations collected between June, July and Aug., and transported to New Life by Ed. Thanks to you, New Life also received our donations of school supplies, which will get the children in need off to a great start! May God bless you as you find ways to minis-ter to needs both inside and outside our church walls.

ELCA presiding bishop responds to

DACA announcement

CHICAGO (Sept. 5, 2017) – The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), has issued the following statement in response to the Trump administration’s announcement about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

“As we journey together through the time God has given us, may God give us the grace of a welcoming heart and an overflowing love for the new neighbors among us”–ELCA social message, “Immigration” (1997).

We are saddened today by the end of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which provided relief from deportation to young people who have grown up as members of our churches, as neighbors playing with our children, and enriching our communities. We pray today for those who will suffer undue repercussions due to the end of this program. As Lutherans, we regard the family as an indispensable social institution and stand firmly against policies that cause the separation of families.

As we lament this change in policy, we call on members of Congress to pass long-overdue legislation to protect young people brought to the U.S. as children, also known as Dreamers. Our churches, our schools, our communities and the country are enhanced by their presence and contributions. It is time that our immigration policy reflects their gifts to all of us.

God’s peace,

Elizabeth A. Eaton ELCA Presiding Bishop

October 21 at St. Francis December 9 at Saint John

Saint John will begin sharing a Saturday evening service once per month with St. Francis starting in October. Zachary Dean, Pastor Cline and Father Mark have worked together to create a new service that differs from our standard Sunday morning service that we expect to be a new and fun experience for people of all ages. The service will alternate between the two locations. We hope to see you all there.
