Best Center In The Game?Earlier this season Mariella Fasoula was named to the Lisa Leslie Award watch list. The award is given to the best center in NCAA college basketball.
Fasoula is just 1-of-2 SEC players on the list, including Mississippi State’s Teaira McCowan. Both remain on the list currently.
Young LeadershipYouth is served on this season’s Vanderbilt roster. Last season, 10 of Vanderbilt’s 14 players were underclassmen. This season’s squad features just two seniors in Bree Horrocks and Jackie Welch.
High Caliber Recruiting
The Commodores welcome in a pair of high-caliber signees in freshmen Brinae Alexander and Jordyn Cambridge. Cambridge was ranked as a Top-23 prospect and No. 4 guard in her class by ESPNHoopGurlz. Alexander was a McDonald’s All-American nominee and named the No. 51 player in her class and No. 14 player in her position by ESPNHoopGurlz. ESPNW named Alexander the No. 33 best player in the nation and Prospect Nation called her the 59th best player.
Beyond the ArcFasoulaRedshirt junior Mariella Fasoula was named one of the top 20 centers in women’s college basketball coming into the season - earning a spot on the Lisa Leslie Award Watch List. Teaira McCowan was the only other SEC player on the list.
The Athens, Greece native is the daughter of Panagiotis Fasoula - better known as “The Spider”. The 7-foot center is a FIBA Hall of Famer and was dominate on Greece’s national team. He played in numerous World Cups, the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and one season for NC State. The Spider is now the mayor of Athens, Greece.
Following in her father’s footsteps, Fasoula made noise on the Greece national team in the World Cup this fall. The squad was stacked with multiple FIBA players and WNBA players.
The Boston College transfer is eligible to play this season after sitting out due to NCAA transfer rules. Fasoula led Boston College with 16 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game as a sophomore.
Clemons-GreenKaleigh Clemons-Green started a homelessness initiative and solicited donations from the Vanderbilt and Nashville community to help create care packages for Nashville’s homeless population.
SEC Rankings-Mariella Fasoula is fifth in points-per-game with 17.2 and fourth in field goal percentage (54).
