vancouverislandstyleMOST ARTISTS IN CANADA: are here on the IslandVancouver Island and the Gulf Islands are home to most of Canada’s population of Artists, probably because of our beautiful, natural surroundings, laid back lifestyle-and incredibly inspiring settings. Many talented known and lesser known Artists live and work here, doing what they love, such as Mark Hobson, Robert Bateman and many others.

Saltspring resident Robert Bateman, in his later years, is getting actively involved in Enviromentalism and preserving the very landscapes and wildlife he paints. Throughout the summer this year he participated in various naturalist and artistic �eld trips, taking teens out into the surrounding saltspring environment, gently teaching while also inspiring. Robert recently published a book for children called Polar Worlds: Life at the ends of the earth. Robert captures the landscape and the wildlife of the north and south poles in sketches and paintings, accompanying each work of art with facts and tales of personal encounters with the creature who roam these chilly regions.

To�no resident and acclaimed Canadian Artist Mark Hobson �nds his inspiration from a similar muse, the coastal regions of the Paci�c Rim & To�no which are beyond words. Mark puts into paint, what words cant.

Our rolling vineyards, farms and forests house some of the most amazing eating and drinking in Canada. Many Island Artisans and Chefs are conjuring up unique mouth watering dishes from the bounty of local organics, seafood, and local wine, further adding to the tantalizing slo-food movement that is in direct contradiction to everything the fast food legacy gave us. Restaurant and Chef Gardens are �lled with herbs, vegetables and edible delicasies, blooming and ready to be integrated into a fabulous, creative dish. Some Chefs are even personally diving for seafood, for that days fresh sheet. Some Artisans on the Islands, especially Saltspring Island, are hand crafting cheese.
