Read the short stories below and then listen and watch this incredible story, song, and artwork unfold. As a teacher, have your students tell a story using Power Point. This is one example of telling a story using PPT; I’ll show another next Tuesday. "Vincent”, a song by Don McLean, written as a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh. It is also known by its opening line, "Starry, Starry Night," a reference to Van Gogh’s painting "Starry Night.” The song describes different paintings by Van Gogh. Don McLean wrote the lyrics in 1971 after reading a book about the life of the artist. The following year the song became the #1 hit in the U.K. and #12 in the U.S. 'Starry Night’ was painted during the time Van Gogh was in an asylum. He sold only one painting during his lifetime, as his genius was not recognized. That's perhaps what caused him to fall into an abyss of depression, which eventually led to his suicide in 1890 at the age of 37. He said in his final note that he was shooting himself ”for the good of all”. How tragic to have felt so hopeless and not understood in spite of being so gifted! Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) Composed & performed by Don Mclean As a future teacher you too may have gifted students who feel this same sense of hopelessness. I think you’re find this Power Point presentation to be beautiful, sorrowful and yet hopefully will encourage you to .

Starry, starry night, paint your palette blue and gray.

Page 3: Van goghsong

Look out on a summer's day

Page 4: Van goghsong

with eyes that know the darkness in my soul.

Shadows on the hills,

Page 5: Van goghsong

sketch the trees and the daffodils,

catch the breeze and the winter chills

Page 6: Van goghsong

in colors on the snowy linen land.

Now I understand

Page 7: Van goghsong

what you tried to say to me,

Page 8: Van goghsong

how you suffered for your sanity, how you tried to set them free.

Page 9: Van goghsong

They would not listen, they did not know how.

Page 10: Van goghsong

perhaps they'll listen now.

Page 11: Van goghsong

Starry, starry night,

Page 12: Van goghsong

flaming flowers that brightly blaze,

Page 13: Van goghsong

swirling clouds in violet hazereflect in Vincent's eyes of China blue..

Page 14: Van goghsong

Colors changing hue,

Page 15: Van goghsong

morning fields of amber grain,

Page 16: Van goghsong

weathered faces lined in pain

are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand.

Now I understand

what you tried to say to me,how you suffered for your sanity,

how you tried to set them free.

Page 19: Van goghsong

They would not listen. They did not know how.

Perhaps they'll listen now.

Page 20: Van goghsong

For they could not love you,

Page 21: Van goghsong

but still your love was true,

and when no hopewas left in sighton that starry, starry night,

Page 22: Van goghsong

You took your life as lovers often do;

But I could have told you, Vincent, this world was never meantfor one as beautiful as you.

Page 23: Van goghsong

Starry, starry night,

Page 24: Van goghsong

portraits hung in empty halls,

Page 25: Van goghsong

frameless heads on nameless walls,

Page 26: Van goghsong

with eyes that watch the world and can't forget.

Like the strangers that you've met,

Page 27: Van goghsong

the ragged men in ragged clothes,

Page 28: Van goghsong

the silver thorn of bloody roselie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

Page 29: Van goghsong

what you tried to say to me,how you suffered for your sanity,

how you tried to set them free.

They would not listen. They're not list’ning still.

Perhaps, they never will.
