As we enter a new calendar year, it is a time of thinking about new beginnings- about turning over anew leaf. New beginnings are always exciting. It is anew start over.

Thousands make New Year's resolutions - but just afew are carried out to completion - Oh yes, they startstrong... but within days, weeks or even months...old

patterns emerge and they fall back into their ruts.

Good news, getting out of this rut isn't as mysterious as one might think. We can call uponour super powers of being genetically inclined towards fabulousness to help us transitionfrom where we are to where we want to be.

The S.M.A.R.T formula if followed step by step will give you a road map to success thatcan help you to respond to situations as they arise and allow you to achieve the goals youhave set out! Here is the formula!

    S- specific- M- measurable-A- agreed upon - R-realistic - T- time bound

S - Specific - for the generic goal to be achieved, it must be broad and specific. Like I want

to get 80% in my exams.M - Measurable - if you can't measure it, you won't know when you have achieved it nor will you be able to see what is getting in the way of achieving it. For the goal to be measur-able, it needs to have an end point, a place of achievement where you can say ' yes I did it!!'

A - Agreed upon - our decisions impact on others, so it is important to share your goals andcommitments with those in your life to get their support. Some of the changes at work might need the support of your manager or supervisor. Or, you might need financial supportto go back to school or start a new business. Get those who are impacted to agree and youwill have more chances of success

R - Realistic - goals without structures are fantasies. Being realistic allows you to harnessyour energy and focus it.

T - Time bound - when will you complete your goal? What are the time lines that you havefor checking in with yourself to ensure you are on track? Maybe you need to tweak or ad-

just your plans and of course, celebrate those small wins!

So I challenge you to take a chance, make a change and start anew and you will see a wholenew SMART YOU.

2011- The InternationalYear Of ForestsBy Licia Avelar on January 1 st,2011

Forests For People- 2011 Celebrates the Interna-tional Year Of Forests

The United Nations has dubbed the year 2011 TheInternational Year of Forests.

2011 will be dedicated to raising awareness aboutthe challenges facing the worlds forests todaylike deforestation and calling to action muchneeded forest conservation. The global campaign

will aim to give the public more motivation to help sustain and manage forests for the fu-ture.

A year dedicated to forests seems very fitting for the year 2011, it follows the year of biodiver-sity (2010) which not only celebrated the variety of biodiversity on earth but also issued themessage that we are at the top of a rollercoaster ride looking at a very steep plunge if we donttake action to preserve our earth. Forests and biodiversity go hand in hand, forests provide awide variety of biodiversity. For biodiversity to flourish, forests must too but with the growingthreat of global warming and deforestation the future of not only forests but also biodiversity

become uncertain. The year 2011 will not only raise awareness but also celebrate the many forests that grace our globe. According to the United Nations, forests cover 31% of land, two thirds of which arelocated in ten countries including our own. (Others include the Russian Federation, Brazil,Canada, China, Australia, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Indonesia, Angola andPeru.)

Through the Year of Forests, the public will be informed of the vitality of forests to humansurvival, not only to the 300 million people that call them home but also to the rest of theworlds human population, for example, forests provide endless wood products to the outsideworld. Without forests everything from a house to a baseball bat would not be possible, Babe

Ruth would be just another farmer if not for the forest.Forests touch almost every aspect of life including the economy. According to the United Na-tions, It was estimated that trade in forest products produced $327 billion in 2004 alone.

One major problem that forests face today is deforestation, which can play a part in globalwarming. The United Nations points out that during the 1990s the world lost about 36.5 mil-lion acres of forest due to deforestation alone. While forest ecosystems account for 80% of theexchange of carbon between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere, deforestation elimi-nates this much needed exchange, causing major damage to the air.

Climate change is not only effected by deforestation but it also impacts the survivingforests.

The ultimate message this year is that we need forests and also need to start protecting themnow for the fate of our own future. There are many ways to combat these growing problems that threaten the existence of for-ests such as forest re-growth but to begin the battle awareness must be raised and the year 2011 will do just that. Throughout the year, planned forest awareness activities will be tak-ing place including exhibitions, tree plantings and competitions that will help shed light onthe importance of forests and involve the public in their protection. The forest series of ac-tivities that will take place throughout the entire year will involve participation of every con-tinent for example; International Green Week in Berlin, Germany and World Water Day inBulgaria.

LUCKNOW: Year 2011 has been declared as the `international year of forests' by the United Nations. The year will be dedicated to raise awareness about challenges faced by the forestsall over the world and motivate people to contribute in forest conservation.

The UP state biodiversity board will also join in. It will create awareness through plannedactivities like exhibitions, plantation drives and competitions throughout the year, saysources in forest department. The state's declining green cover has always been an area of concern. The department organizes extensive plantation drives to meet the national average of 33% of geographical area as green area. But despite the ambitious plantation targets set every year,UP's green cover constitutes merely 9.01% of its geographical area. In UP tree cover is de-clining.The report based on manual sampling, showed a decline in tree cover area by at least 822square kilometer, when compared to previous assessments. Trees cut down for constructionactivities, road expansion and developmental activities have led to this decline.Experts say that forest ecosystems account for 80% of the exchange of carbon between ter-restrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. But, with deforestation on the rise, clean air andoxygen emission is on the decline.

Don Bosco : Educator and Teacher of the YoungJanuary 31st : Feast of Don Bosco

(A special feature on the Preventive System of Don Bosco)

"Don Bosco realized his personal holiness through an educative commitment(John Paul II, Letter Juvenum Patris , 5). His pastoral praxis and pedagogicalstyle spring from this experience. Spiritual life, apostolic commitment, educativemethod are three aspects of a single reality: the love and pastoral charity thatunifies and drives all of existence: to be in the Church signs and bearers of Gods love for the young

"This system is based entirely on reason, religion and above all on loving-kindness (DonBosco). This Preventive System of Don Bosco is a way of Educating the Young to wholeness.

    The Preventive System as Pedagogy

The Preventive System is also a pedagogical method characterized by: the wish to be amidst theyoung sharing their life, looking sympathetically at their world, attentive to their real experiences andvalues; the unconditional acceptance that becomes a tireless capacity for dialogue and power for their growth the preventive criterion which believes in the strength of the good already present inevery youngster, even the most needy, and which seeks to develop this through positive good ex-periences; the centrality of reason which becomes reasonableness of requests and rules, flexibilityand persuasiveness in proposals; and of religion understood as developing the sense of God presentin every person and the power of Christian evangelization; and of loving-kindness expressed as aneducative love that enables growth and brings about a meeting of minds and hearts; a positive environment shot through with personal relationships, enlivened by the loving and reliablepresence of educators and one which is also active, energizing and on behalf of the young; with a style of animation that believes in the positive resources of the young.

The Preventive System as Pastoral Ministry This original proposal for evangelizing the young departs from the point of encounter with the youngright where they are to be found, by valuing the natural and supernatural patrimony that each young-ster has in his or her self, and in an educative environment which is rich in proposals; it is carried outvia an educative approach that privileges the poorest and neediest; it promotes the development of the positive resources they have and proposes a particular form of Christian life and youthful holi-ness. This original project of Christian life is organized around certain experiences of faith, certainchoices of gospel values and attitudes that constitute Salesian Youth Spirituality (SYS)

    .

The Preventive System as Spirituality The Preventive System finds its source and centre in the experience of Gods charity that throughHis Providence comes before (the real meaning of preventive) each creature . This charity accom-panies and saves (gives life to) the individual This experience predisposes the educator to welcomeGod in the young, convinced that in them God offers the grace of encounter with Him, and calls theeducator to serve God in them, recognizing their dignity, renewing faith in their resources of good-ness and educating them to fullness of life. This pastoral charity creates an educative rapport fitted to the adolescent, indeed the poorest of them. It is a fruit of the conviction that each life, even the poorest, most complex, most precariousexistence, carries within it the power of redemption and the seed of happiness through the mysteri-ous presence of the Holy Spirit

The Preventive System: Making your School Different 1. The Environment of the School: The idea of the school becoming a second home is a realityin the Salesian set-up. The presence of the educator draws out the best form the student because itis an environment where the student feels loved. Love is the language spoken and experienced inthis environment.

    2. The Presence is Enabling : The student longs for the presence of the educator in their midst. This presence is welcoming, friendly, educative and accompanying. The student realizes that theeducator is not there to stifle the freedom of the student but rather it is an enabling presence thattransforms the outlook of the students to their educators.

    3. The Inner Dimensions of Youth: The preventive system of Don Bosco addresses the veryquest of every student/ young person and satisfies the deepest desires in living a purposeful andmeaningful life. The preventive system touches the three inner core principles (reason, religion andloving kindness) that bring the young person face to face with his/her own dignity as a person.

    4. A Spirituality of Relationships: The secret of Don Boscos preventive system is found in thedepths of the relationship that is bridged between the student and the educator. We are called towalk first through the door of the heart of the young person so that the young person can finally walkout through the door of our heart. Don Bosco believed in the power of the web of relationships.

    5. A Holistic Formation : Don Boscos educative system is holistic to the core. Young people areaccompanied to become good Christians and responsible citizens. The body-head-heart-soul forma-tion leads the young person to grow fully in an environment of responsible freedom, trust and guidedby conscience.
