Social NormsSocial Norms is manners and laws.

It can also be what society expect from you and what you should do as an everyday behavior.Basic things that keep the human race from

devolving into something uncivilized. It can also be what makes a difference human

from behaving as animals.

Examples• Gift giving during Christmas

is considered a social norm.• Leaving a tip for the waiter.

• Men pay for dinner most of the time.• Only having sex with consenting adults.

• Saying please and thank you.• Wearing Clothing in public.

Showering.Picking someone up if they fall

downOpening the door for old ladies.

Going to the back of the line.Not talking with your mouth full.

InstitutionSocial institutions are beliefs and behavior centered on basic social needs. All societies rely on a minimum of five social institutions.

ExamplesPolitic -Every society must have some political structure to maintain internal order and to protect against external threats.- In modern society, we have a formal system of law which we follow- Armed forces for protection against external threat.

Socialization- school is created to pass on information that may not be known to family members & to pass on more knowledge to our young members.

Examples Family( reproduction)No society can exist for more than one generation unless it replaces itself.

Religious Institutions To keep people motivated, they must have a belief in something that transcends the self.

EconomySocieties must provide for the production and distribution of goods and services. As today, we rely on corporations, and high technology.

expectations and rules by which a culture guides the behavior of its members. All norms vary depending on their cultural groups.

• Ex: Americans, for instance, maintain fairly direct eye contact when conversing with others; Asians, on the other hand, may avert their eyes as a sign of politeness and respect.

ValuesValues in society are what it holds to be

“good” or desirable.

Both of these are values. How do they diff er?
