³LOCK´ will be utilized to the side of a single wideout. In ³LOCK´, the corner to
the single receiver side will lock onto the receiver and be responsible for covering him man to man. The Hammer will align 9 x 3 off the OT. He will
read through the OT to the #2 receiver. His action is determined by the release
of #2, and mirror that of the Striker in ³CONNIE´. The underneath defender,
ill, will mirror the pattern of #2 at a depth of 10 yards. Should the receiver
run an ³in´ route, the ill will squeeze (cautiously chase) this route and
anticipate the next route. Should #2 run an ³up´ route (vertical), the ill willmove laterally in order to re-route #2 and run with him to a depth of 10 yards,
after which he will release him to the Hammer and attempt to get under the
route of #1. Should #2 run an ³out´ route, the ill will mirror the route at a
depth of 10 yards and convert to man to man coverage should #2 turn his route
A "FOX" call is a call made that aligns the Hammer at linebacker depth (5 yards) for added run support. Additionally, the Corner will deepen his alignment to 10-12 yards. ith a FOX call, the Hammer will have Area 1 responsibilities vs. pass, while the Corner to the one receiver side will have deep 1/2responsibilities. The ill will have Area 2 responsibilities.
A BANJO call is given vs. a TE and a wing, or a TE and a back. In a BANJO call, the Striker will beresponsible for the first up, or deep route (or innermost vs. two verticals), while the Corner will cover thefirst out route (or outermost vs. two verticals). The Lion will have Area 1 responsibilities (or 3rd out) vs. a
TE and wing, while the Mike will work from area 3 to 2, and be responsible for the #3 receiver on anydeep routes. Vs. a TE and a back, the Lion will BANJO with the Striker, while the Mike will bereponsible for the 3rd out.
³SALLY´ is the coverage that will be utilized vs. a twin set. This is a form of
soft cover 2.
ALIGNMENT and A JUSTMENTS
Vs. a twin set, the Corner will align 8 ± 9 yards deep and 1 yard outside #1.
The deep defender (could be Hammer, Striker, or the other Corner) will align
head-up on #2 at a minimum of 12 yards deep. The underneath defender
should split the difference horizontally between #2 and the OT at 5 yards deep, aligning closer to the LOS vs. a wide split by #2 and tighter to #2 vs. a tighter
split. The underneath defender should align no wider than 6 yards outside the
OT, and assume outside leverage on #2 when his alignment is within 5 yards
#2 receiver runs out route, deep inside defender takes #1man-to-man. The outside corner runs with #2, defendinghim in man-to-man coverage.
#2 receiver runs deep route, deep inside defender takes himman-to-man. The outside corner peddals while #2 is vertical, coming off when he is taken by the deep defender.
