SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Valley Rovers 0.18 V’s Avondhu 1.14

Valley Rovers Senior footballers took on Avondhu in the

4th round of the championship in Ovens on Sunday and

once again gave us another super comeback. Despite

Valleys getting the opening point it was Avondhu who

had the better of the opening quarter as they lead by 1-

03 to 0-01. By the end of normal time in the first half

Avondhu had increased their lead to 8 points. The

referee added 8 minutes to the end of the first half due

to the injuries of two Valleys players. In this time Valleys

outscored Avondhu four points to one and it left the

half time score Valley Rovers 0-05 Avondhu 1-07.

Turning to face the wind a Valley Rovers win looked

unlikely, however into the second half Valleys began to

play some better football but by the end of the third

quarter Avondhu lead by six . Into the last quarter

Valleys took control of the game and by the end of

normal time it was a draw game. In the first minute of

added time Avondhu raced up field and as Rory O

Hagan looked like kicking the winner a partial block by

Tim Cummins meant the shot fell short in goalkeeper

Cormac Desmonds hands. Into the second minute of

injury time Valleys had one last attack and the ball was

worked to John Cottrell and he kicked accurately and

gave Valleys the Victory on the score line of Valley

Rovers 0-18. Avondhu 1-14. The win puts Valleys into

the quarter final.

SOUTH EAST JUNIOR A HURLING FINAL

Valley Rovers 0.14 V’s Tracton 1.08

On Friday last Valley Rovers Junior hurlers headed for

Ballygravan in search of 2 in a row south east titles,

and they didn’t let us down. In the first 6 minutes

Valleys raced into a 4 point lead, 1 each from Darragh

Crowley and Rory O’Sullivand and 2 from Richie Butler.

Valleys remained in charge for the rest of the first half

but had goalkeeper Gary Jones to thank on 2 occasions

when making 2 great saves, The score at half time was

Valley’s 0.09 to Tracton 0.03. The 2nd half was going

exactly as Valley would have wanted up until the 28th

minute of the 2nd half when they lead by 0.14 to 0.07,

however a goal and a point by Tracton with 2 minutes

to go gave the supporters an interesting las couple of

minutes but Tracton couldn’t get the goal to force a

replay and Valley won on a scoreline of Valleys 0.14 to

Tracton 1.08.

LADIES FOOTBALL

UNDER 16’s

Valley Rovers 1-09 Coursey Rovers 1.06

Our U16 girls travelled to Redmond's pitch last

Thursday night to take on Courcey Rovers in the

county semi-final. Valleys won the toss and decided to

play with the wind, however, it was the Courcey girls

who got the better start and raced into a 1:01 to no

score lead after 10 mins, the goal coming from a well

taken penalty. Valleys slowly settled with a lead point

from Orla O Sullivan followed by further scores from

Ellen Fehily, Nicole Callanan & O Sullivan again. Right

on the stroke of halftime, Valleys got their all-

important goal when the ball came back off the

crossbar for Orla to react quickest and slammed the

ball to the net to leave the halftime score of Valleys

1:4 to Courceys 1:1

The second half resumed and proved a tense affair as

both defences continued to dominate. Sterling

defence from Emma O Donavan and Niamh Hurley,

coupled with Sarah lynch at halfback, Valleys repelled

attack after attack and with Laoise Collins proving to

be a key link player at midfield Valleys knocked over

further scores from the mercurial O Sullivan and

Callanan to maintain their lead. Courceys continued to

try and level the game but thankfully the Valleys rear-

guard held firm to run out winners on a score line of

VALLEY ROVERS 1:09 to COURCEY ROVERS 1:06

UNDER 10’s

Well done to the u10 Valley Rovers Ladies football team

for a great day at the Passage West U10 blitz on

Saturday. The day started where the girls joined a

parade of 123 teams from the four corners of Ireland

behind the Carrigaline Pipe Band.

The girls showed great teamwork, shooting, passing

and a typical Valley Rovers "never say attitude" in

games against Kenmore (Kerry), Mungret (Limerick )

and St Nicks and St Vals of Cork. The coaches are

delighted with the progress shown. This was a blitz

where we prioritised girls in their last year u10 and all

girls present got lots of game time. The best summary

of the day was that all the girls left with smiles on

their faces, which is one of the aims of playing sport.

The girls who represented us on Saturday were Ella

Ryan, Emily McGrath, Sorcha Hurley, Caoimhe Craig,

Lydia Huggard, Shona Cronin, Allanah McCarthy, Aoife

Dullea, Croina Murphy, Ally McGrath, Millie Slyne,

Sadbh Forde, Suzie Murphy and Dilly Barry Twohig.

UNDER 16’s

Valleys U16’s travelled to Clonakilty to take on

Castlehaven in their P2 football quarter final. Valleys

started brightly with two points from the impressive

Adam Walsh Murphy. It was nip and tuck as

Castlehaven tagged on a few points and led by two

approaching half time. An opportunist goal from

Adam Walsh Murphy saw the sides go in level at half

time 1-5 to 0-8. The second half continued to be a

tight affair for the opening 15 minutes, points from

Cormac Kilduff, Aaron O’ Leary and Cian Crowley kept

the scoreboard ticking over. As we entered the last

ten minutes Valleys kept up the pressure with a

mixture of some outstanding defending from Cathal

O’Sullivan and Brian Hoey and two further goals from

Adam Walsh Murphy saw Valleys run out winners 3-10

to 0-13. Others to score on the day were Ronan

O’Connell and Darragh O’Shea. Valleys now await the

winners of Mallow\St Micheals clash.

U12 Martin Muldoon Tournament

Pictured above Valley Rovers 2 (U12’s) and Valley

Rovers 3 (U11’s)

Saturday last saw Valley Rovers host the inaugural

Martin Muldoon memorial hurling tournament.

With both a Cup and plate competition running on

both pitch 1 & 2 a busy day of games lay ahead.

Due to a withdrawal in the plate competition on

Friday, Valley Rovers U-11s came to the rescue to

Page 6: VALLEY ROVERS JUNIOR A HURLERS WHO RETAINED THEIR …sportlomo-userupload.s3.amazonaws.com/uploaded/... · and St Nicks and St Vals of Cork. The coaches are delighted with the progress

enter a team in the tournament on Saturday morning.

In the plate competition on pitch 2 it was Valley

Rovers 2 , Valley Rovers 3, Mayfield & Tracton. and

with both Tracton and Valley Rovers 3 putting up a

serious fight in their games it was Valley Rovers 2 &

Mayfield who contested in the plate final where it was

Mayfield with a strong display of hurling to take a

comfortable win against Valley Rovers 2.

Pictured above Cup finalists Valley Rovers and Cashel

King Cormac’s

In the Cup competition, it was Valley Rovers 1, Cashel

King Cormacs, Bride Rovers & Ballinhassig who

contested this competition.

Very little separated all these teams it was Valley

Rovers 1 & Cashel King Cormacs who fought out an

excellent final where Valley Rovers 1 done enough to

win the Martin Muldoon Cup.

Captaining the Valley Rovers 1 team it was Enda

Muldoon who was presented with the cup by his

grandfather on behalf the Muldoon family.

Valley Rovers would like to thank all involved in the

organising of this tournament to parents, friends and

family who supplied and helped out with food and

refreshments. To the teams that participated and the

referees Paul Hoey and Pat O Leary, to the Valley

Rovers U-11s who came into the Tournament at such

short notice.

A special thank you to the Muldoon Family who put up

the plate and cup in memory of Martin.

This was a memorable day for all involved and will no
