Valley React started in February 2013 with 5 members, we now have over 400 regular members and 1,000 people on our data base. We have had such a positive reaction to the setting up of this group that we now lowering our age range to 19+ as we find people want to volunteer to help us in our cause to break the loneliness and depression cycle. We do plenty of organised events and go out for meals and trips away for the day. We are a very friendly lot and chatty is the name of the game. Valley React has two new projects coming out this year, e Open Door, more aſternoon sessions and possibly a night session where everyone is welcome and Life is the Name of the Game – Weekly Chairobics, Tai Chi, Computers and Art at Balfour House, Horner Close, Stocksbridge, see the pink leaflet. Sheffield City Council Housing Services have given us the room for free so we can keep our costs as low as possible. We have just become their new poster group on the front page of ‘e In Touch Magazine’ going out to all of Sheffield Housing Council Tenants with a page of what goes on at Valley React, so our fame is spreading through Sheffield and is being used as a flagship project. Society can unintentionally isolate people who find it difficult to get out and about. It can be great for older people to explore new things they haven’t done before. Sometimes it is not just physical, but it can be more deep rooted in our heads and our hearts when we come out. Part of being young is getting out and about on our own and when we can no longer do this we feel our independence has been taken away, and that can leave a terrible deficit in our lives. We have been walkers, dancers, explorers, and have been really active, and now live a totally different sense of a life. Our head says we can but our physical body says we cannot, which can be mentally depressing. What Valley React members see, is people having a laugh and joining in the fun, going home with something different to think about and good memories.
