Progress to Date: City of Vallejo secured funding for the Vallejo Station Parking Structure; Phase A of the ultimate 1200‐car garage is slated to open in early 2012 The first element of the Vallejo Station project, a Regional‐serving Bus Transit Center, opened in October of 2011 City purchased fee title to the Downtown Post Office property in September, 2010 Local USPS staff and the City have identi‐ fied a “preferred site” for a new 10,000 sq. ft. distribution facility in Vallejo USPS and the City continue to look at potential downtown retail sites Next Steps in Relocation of Downtown Post Office Facility The existing Downtown Post Office needs to relocate and the current building demolished by early 2013 to make way for Phase B of the Vallejo Station Parking Structure Consider alternatives to relocation of the distribution element of the downtown post office, such as consolidation of routes with other USPS distribution facilities USPS needs to select a downtown “preferred retail site” and initiate its public review process Finalize necessary agreements for action by the USPS, the City Council and property owners Vallejo Station/USPS Relocation Background The City of Vallejo and the Waterfront developer are working to revitalize Vallejo’s 92‐acre water‐ front with a dynamic mix of new housing, retail, office, and light industrial jobs, plus new parks and improved open space. Major public improvements build on the Water‐ front’s role as a regional transit hub, including the two‐phase Vallejo Station Parking Structure and Bus Transit Center. The Problem The existing US Postal facility in downtown Vallejo sits on the site of the second phase of the parking structure. With the first phase of the Parking Structure slated to open in early 2012, the City is working with the US Postal Service to relocate its downtown post office, clearing the site for the second phase of the Parking Struc‐ ture. Once completed, this additional structure will provide 600 ferry parking stalls and launch the development of a new hotel and conference center, retail and office space, and transit‐friendly housing. Time is of the Essence The City of Vallejo is facing deadlines with their downtown improvement plans and funding for the balance of the parking structure. The City’s project cannot move forward until the Post Office vacates the existing Downtown facility. The City would like the USPS to “fast‐track” the process and enter into an agreement with the City of Vallejo by the end of 2012. Alternatives to relo‐ cating the carrier annex should be seriously con‐ sidered to save time. March 2012
