SAVE THE DATE Upcoming Grand Rounds

A s time goes on, more resources and tools are becoming available to physi-cians to help them meet Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements

for their specialty boards. While each specialty board has a plethora of mod-ules and resources available to physicians that meet requirements, the following resources should make it easier to find MOC Part II: Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment and MOC Part IV: Improvement in Medical Practice activities, some of which have been approved to meet the requirements of multiple boards. ABMS MOC Directory As mentioned last year, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), in partnership with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), launched the ABMS MOC Directory, powered by MedEdPORTAL’S CE Directory. The MOC Directory offers ABMS member board diplomates access to a comprehensive, centralized repository of approved MOC activities across medical specialties and subspecialties. Diplomates can browse the MOC Directory by member board or by ABMS competency to find activities that meet their needs. According to ABMS, the MOC Directory is an-other example of the commitment that ABMS and its member boards have made toward innovation within the MOC framework. As the MOC Direc-tory continues to grow, it is expected to meet the expanded needs of ABMS member board diplo-mates, especially with regard to access to MOC Part II and MOC Part IV.

ACCME Partnership: CME that Counts for MOC According to the Accreditation Council for Con-tinuing Medical Education (ACCME), it has long supported the goals of MOC, the importance of alignment between accredited CME and MOC, and the role of accredited CME as a strategic re-source to MOC. Its accreditation criteria require that CME provid-ers develop activities in the context of desirable physician attributes, such as the ACGME/ABMS competencies. In 2013, at the request of ABMS, ACCME modified the Program and Activity Re-porting System (PARS) to require CME providers to enter the competencies that each of their activi-ties address. As a continuation of these efforts, ACCME is exploring collaborations with ABMS member boards to simplify and align the MOC process to better meet the needs of diplomates and to facili-tate the integration of CME and MOC. In addition to its collaboration with the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), ACCME has now partnered with the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) and the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). ACCME and these boards have collaborated to simplify the integration of MOC and accredited CME. They formed this collaboration in response to requests from physicians and accredited CME providers to expand the number and diversity of accredited CME activities that offer MOC points, and to streamline the process for registering CME activities in the boards’ MOC programs.

Under this partnership, CME providers, such as ACMEC, are no longer required to submit appli-cations to the boards for activity peer review ap-proval. Instead, accredited CME providers are able to use PARS to register activities for the boards’ MOC programs and make them available for physicians to claim MOC credit. As part of this registration process, CME provid-ers attest to compliance with requirements for the MOC program, agree to collect the required individual participant completion data and submit it via PARS, agree to abide by the requirements for use of the data, agree to allow ACCME to publish data about the activity on ACCME’s web-site, and agree to comply with requests for infor-mation about the activity if it is selected for an MOC audit by the ACCME. This collaboration offers additional choices for physicians to apply MOC credit for CME activi-ties they are already participating in that meet the requirements. Over the next year, ACMEC will work with high-performing joint providers to explore opportuni-ties to offer MOC credit for activities certified for CME credit. The first two activities ACMEC will be providing MOC credit for will be this year’s Idaho Perinatal Project 2017 Winter Confer-ence and the IHAWCC Oral Health Integra-tion Learning Collaborative.
