7 YEARS OF VISION
The story about CKB started in this street of Podgorica, in this building, in the flat number 2, at the beginning of 1997. It was a joint idea of venturous people who felt and knew the time they lived in, strongly believing in future.
Today, seven years later, CKB is a pillar around which numerous clients gather solving everyday business and personal issues but also bringing strategic decisions for the future. CKB is an unavoidable factor, promoter and author of numerous development initiatives in the economy of Montenegro. According to all important banking parameters CKB is today the leading one in the banking system of Montenegro.
CKB team consists of young, educated people who have active knowledge of one or more world languages and constant need to improve themselves. Bank’s management and shareholders provide for high quality education for the employees by organizing or sending them to various courses, seminars, study trips in the country and abroad. We are trying to give young people the chance to find themselves and realize themselves professionally.
International reputation, as an important business objective of CKB, was being built and acquired step by step. Sometimes we had to eliminate some wrong ideas or prejudices about Montenegro and show that our small country offers beautiful and unique view of the Mediterranean and represents a bridge connecting numerous cultures and businesses; a bridge connecting them into one whole and giving hope and meaning to our existence as well. We have realized that our role is to present, through one financial institution and using international parameters, that profitable side of Montenegro and its market. And we succeeded.

Geographically, Montenegro belongs to South East Europe, and since 2002, makes up one half of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro. Montenegro shares borders with Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo, Albania, and, via the Adriatic Sea, with Italy. Based on the 2003 census, Montenegro currently has a population of 617,740, more than one fourth of which lives in the administrative capital, Podgorica. 38% of the population lives in rural areas. Montenegro still hosts approximately 13,000 refugees from other former Yugoslav republics, and 18,000 in-ternally displaced persons from Kosovo.
Even though official statistics show that the economy is showing signs of recovery, the living standards of most of the popula-tion are very poor. This view is supported by the recently adopted National Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper, which sug-gests that 12.2% of the population lives below the poverty line, and that 1/3 of the population are classified as economically vulnerable. It is an alarming fact that the majority of population hovers at or around the poverty line, and that a margin of only 23 EUR above or below the monthly expenditure or income per capita would double the official numbers of people living below the poverty line, resulting in 25% of the entire population of Mon-tenegro living below poverty line.
On a more positive note, Montenegro remains a good example of tolerance and co-existence for the entire region, containing as it does a peaceful mix of dif-ferent cultures, nationalities, and religions. Civil society, although still in its infancy, has begun to act more and more as a watchdog of the legislative and execu-tive administration in Montenegro, thus contributing significantly to the overall democratization of society.

NAlter Modus is a Montenegrin non-govern-mental organization founded in 1997. Our mission is to support marginalized people in order to enable them to increase their economic independence, self-esteem and active participation in society.
Alter Modus realizes its mission by provid-ing financial support and business advice to entrepreneurial initiatives, by organising and participating in informational and edu-cational activities, and through lobbying and advocacy leading to the empower-ment of our target group.
Client-orientation is of utmost importance to the work of Alter Modus. We employ a special focus on developing strong rela-tionships with our partners, relationships based on mutual respect, self-initiative and continuous improvement of our knowledge and skills. Our work is distin-guished by creativity, flexibility, efficiency and impartiality.
Alter Modus achieves sustainability through cooperation with the representatives of marginalized groups, local and national government administrations, international donor organizations and other internation-al organizations and institutions, as well as with national civil society representatives in Montenegro. We also recognize the value inherent in initiating and participating in the activities of local and international networks and coalitions.

Legal Status
Alter Modus is a nongovern-mental organization regis-tered with the Montenegrin Ministry of Justice under No. 253. Alter Modus is also registered with the Monte-negrin Commercial Court under code 7-0002720/001. Microcredit operations are conducted under the ap-proval of the Central Bank of Montenegro, issued on May 18th 2003.
Our partners play a key role in the success of Alter Modus. We welcome and value their contribution to our work, whether it be in the design, implementation, financial, or advisory capacity.
In 2003, the multi-year and successful co-operation between Alter Modus and a number of partners, including UNHCR, Mercy Corps and Church World Service drew to a mutually satisfactory end. Transfer of ownership to Alter Modus of funds on all 2000-2003 contracts has enabled our organization to further develop and expand services to our clients.
In 2003, some of our new and old partners were:
Dutch Agency for International Development Co-operation (Novib), with whom a new, additional loan agreement was signed for further development of the credit programme;Caritas Luxemburg, with whom a Memorandum of Understand-ing was signed for development and expansion of our services to clients in the North East of Montenegro, and;European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), whose Credit Committee approved a loan to Alter Modus at the end of 2003, enabling us to put into action ambitious plans for expansion of the credit programme.
Alter Modus remains open to, and interested in co-operation with all other Montenegrin non-governmental organisations, and is in a daily contact with many of them.

The characteristics that define the corporate culture of our organization are empathy, respect, and honesty. Our clients and partners come first with us. We strive to be always precise and effective in the way we com-municate with them, thus ensuring the delivery of the most accurate and comprehensive information and services to them. Internally, we practice these values with our own employees on an everyday basis.
In 2003, the organization continued in its policy of constantly updating the professional skills and capacity of our staff. Our approach to capacity building continues to be as diverse and as far-reaching as in former years, and includes capacity building as organized from within the organization itself and as provided by outside organizations and international gatherings, etc. In addition, our organization offers a wide range of internal learning resources to staff, such as the Alter Modus library, which continues to be used extensively.
One of the key elements of our success is the close relationship established with clients and the parity in the creditor-client rela-tionship. Alter Modus cherishes its client-oriented approach, and treats its clients with full respect and appreciation. We cooperate and communicate intensively with our clients throughout the business cycle, enabling us to be thoroughly familiar with our clients’ busi-nesses and to offer technical assistance where needed.
