Bukit Larut, formerly known as Maxwell Hill, is a popular highland destination in Malaysia.Located at an altitude of 1,25 m a!o"e sea le"el approximately 1 km from #aiping town in

$erak% it is the wettest area in the country which experiences the highest rainfall. Bukit Larut

is also home to the oldest hill station in Malaysia, !uilt !y &illiam 'dward Maxwell, a British

 (ssistant )esident in $erak, in 1**+ to pro"ide a cool retreat for the colonial officials. n

1-1, the hill resort was gaetted as a permanent forest reser"e.

&ith daily temperatures of 1 to 25 degrees /elsius, Bukit Larut is indeed an ideal

destination for those wanting to escape from the heat and humidity of Malaysia0s lowlands.

 (lthough it is the smallest hill compared to other hill resorts in the country, it preser"es much

more of the atmosphere of a colonial hill station and offers a natural peaceful and uiet

sanctuary for weary souls. #here are no swanky or fi"estar hotels a"aila!le% accommodationis modest !ut nonetheless comforta!le and coy with a num!er of welcoming !ungalows

and rest houses, some of which were !uilt almost a century ago.

#he hill resort features lush e"ergreens and a wide can"as of "i!rantly colored flowers such

as daisies, tulips, roses, pansies, marigold, dahlias and petunias. 3olden sunflowers,

reputedly of the largest "ariety in the country, can also !e found in a!undance. #here is also

a waterfall where "isitors can en4oy a cool splash or a picnic.

#he many nature trails a"aila!le at the hill resort pro"ide the opportunity to disco"er Bukit

Larut0s unspoilt natural !eauty and a close o!ser"ation of the hill0s "arious species of flora

and fauna such as gi!!ons and suirrels, wild orchids, Mountain 3iant ishtail $alm and

many species of !rackenlike ferns. (nother popular tourist acti"ity is !ird watchingespecially along the 3unung Hi4au #rail which circles 3unung Hi4au leading towards the

summit. 6n a clear day, it is possi!le to see an enchanting "iew of the &est /oast of the

peninsula stretching from $enang to $angkor sland at the summit of the hill.

Pangkor Island 7locally Pulau Pangkor 8 is a resort island off the coast of $erak, Malaysia.

Kellie's Castle 7sometimes also called Kellie's Folly8 is a castle located near Batu3a4ah, $erak, Malaysia. #he unfinished, ruined mansion, was !uilt !y a cottish planternamed &illiam Eellie mith. (ccording to differing accounts, it was either a gift for his wife or 

a home for his son. EellieFs /astle is situated !eside the )aya )i"er 7ungai )aya8 which isa tri!utary to the Einta )i"er .

&illiam Eellie mith 71*>G1-2=8 :1; was !orn in 1*> in Eellas, Moray irth, cotland. n

1*-, at the age of 2, he arri"ed in Malayaas a ci"il engineer . He 4oined /harles (lma

BakerFs sur"ey firm, who had won concessions from the state go"ernment to clear -

hectares of forests in Batu 3a4ah, $erak. &ith the su!stantial profits made from his !usiness

"enture with Baker, mith !ought 1, acres 7+5 ha8 of 4ungle land in the district of Einta

and started planting ru!!er trees and da!!led in the tin mining industry.

n time, he named his estate Einta Eellas after his home farm 'aster Eellas and went on to

own the Einta Eellas #in ?redging /ompany as well. &ith his fortune made, he returnedhome to marry his cottish sweetheart, (gnes, and !rought her o"er to Malaya in 1-<.

#hey had a daughter named Helen the following year.

n 1-- mith !uilt his first mansion, Eellas House, and in 1-15 with the !irth of his son

and heir (nthony he started planning for a huge castle with cottish, Moorish and ndian

architecture. He !rought in > craftsmen from Madras, ndia. (ll the !ricks and mar!le were

imported from ndia, too. ncluded in the plan for the =storey tower was MalayaFs first

ele"ator, an indoor tennis court and a rooftop courtyard for entertaining.

$lanning and early construction[edit]

?uring construction, a "irulent strain of panish lu struck his workmen. &hen his workmen

approached him to !uild a temple near!y, mith readily agreed. n return for his generosity,

they !uilt a statue of him !eside the other deities on the temple wall. t is !elie"ed that a

tunnel was !uilt to the temple from the castle.

mithFs mansion is accessi!le from the main road across a !ridge o"er a stream. His house

was so uniue that it was e"en mentioned in the London inancier newspaper on 15

eptem!er 1-11.

/onstruction difficulties and mithFs death[edit]

&illiam Eellie mith died at the age of 5= of pneumonia during a short trip to Lis!on,

House, later known as EellieFs olly or EellieFs /astle, was sold to a British company

Belum-Temenggor  7sometimes spelled as Belum#emengor8 is the largest continuous forest

complex in $eninsular Malaysia. pecifically, it is located in the Malaysian state of $erak and

crosses into outhern #hailand. Belum#emenggor is di"ided into two sections. Belum is located

up north right !y the Malaysia#hailand !order while #emenggor is south of Belum. #he )oyal

Belum tate $ark is entirely contained within the forest complex.

Belum#emenggor is !elie"ed to ha"e !een in existence for o"er 1< million years making it one

of the world0s oldest rainforests, older than !oth the (maon and the /ongo.. :1; n the heart of the

forest lies the manmade lake of #asik #emenggor, co"ering 15,2 Hectares which is dotted with

hundreds of islands.

Malaysian 9ational $hysical $lan and recognied !y Birdlife nternational as anmportant Bird

 (rea. #he Malaysian federal go"ernment has la!elled the area as a whole as an essential water

catchment area and part of  /entral orest pine and plans to protect the forest under the

Malaysian 9ational orestry (ct.

?espite that, !etween the two, only part of Belum orest )eser"e has !een gaette as a tate

$ark while the rest are production forest open for de"elopment. #emenggor in particular is facing

considera!le deforestation due to logging. 'n"ironmental organiations such as Malaysian

9ature ociety and the &orld &ildlife und ha"e !een lo!!ying !oth the state and the federal

go"ernment to gaette the area as a park. #he state go"ernment of $erak howe"er has resisted

the effort citing that logging pro"ides the state with more than )M < million in re"enue.

9e"ertheless, the state go"ernment gaetted 1,1>5 suare kilometres, part of the Belum forest

reser"e as state park on May < 2>.:2;

Belum#emenggorFs relati"ely untouched forest is home to a wide "ariety of flora and fauna

including 1+ of the worldFs most threatened mammals including the Malayan tiger , (siatic

elephant, white handed gi!!on, Malaysian sun!ear  and tapir . 6ther animals

include seladang, wild !oars, numerous species of  deer , pythons and co!ras. Belum #emenggor

is home to o"er < a"ian species. t is the only existing forest where all 1 species

of horn!ill that inha!it Malaysia are found, namely the whitecrowned horn!ill,!ushycrested

horn!ill, wrinkled horn!ill, wreathed horn!ill, plainpouched horn!ill, !lack horn!ill, 6riental pied

horn!ill, rhinoceros horn!ill, great horn!ill and helmeted horn!ill.:<;n the forest you can also find

<, species of flowering plants, including < species of  )afflesia, the worldFs largest flower.
