3Welcome!
Dear friend!
This booklet offers you ideas for visiting Es-tonia and for
spending your vacation at major sights in Estonian counties. We
hope that this booklet provides you now and again with rea-sons to
wander off your regular route and get to know the sights worth
seeing, as well as our greatest asset our people. Wherever we
stopped while compiling this book be it a coastal village, ancient
burial grounds or ruins of an old castle, we always met people who
stressed: The greatest asset of this place is its local people! We
are truly rich because of ourselves. We have willpower to
accomplish things, courage, spirit and simple kindness. We are glad
that there is increasingly more co-operation on attempts to
preserve our natural resources, revive communities and pay more
attention to our historic values. Our children proudly wear the
Estonian national costumes at our Song and Dance Celebrations.
Young en-trepreneurs in villages and tourist farms can tell you
stories of their great-grandparents lives and are eager to do so.
We assure you that everyone who was involved in the compilation of
this booklet welcomes you here in Estonia contact us, and a
wonderful experience is guaranteed. You will find it a pleasure to
spend your vaca-tion in Estonia.

Holiday in the nature
Estonia is a country rich in forests, almost half of all
Estonian land or 2,2 million hectares are covered with forest.
Nearly half (40%) of all Estonian forest belong to the Estonian
state. RMK preserves and manages these forests. RMK is a government
profit-making institution that was established with the Forest Act.
The main objective of RMK is sustainable and ef-ficient forest
management: reforestation, tending and use of forest and
organisation of forest protec-tion. State forest land amounts to
nearly 1 mil-lion hectares where hundreds of buildings and
facilities are located. The task of the RMK Real Estate Department
is to organise an expedient and optimal use of that real estate.RMK
Real Estate Department deals with land readjustment and other land
activities arising from legislation and maintenance,
administra-tion, renovation and construction of buildings.
Registered immovables owned by other persons are also adjacent to
the state forest land and due to this the Real Estate Department
also has to deal with issues related to the regularisation and
coordination of other persons rights (real and personal servitudes,
reasoned border changes, etc.) on the state forest land.To keep the
remain surrounding nature that has been prepared for your visit
attractive for those coming after you, we ask you, our dear forest
vi-sitor, to follow the above-mentioned principles and the
following guidelines. For of your own and others well-being, please
act as follows:At making a fire use only a prepared fireplace in
the period
when fire making is allowed use ready-made firewood or fallen
branches use firewood sparingly, to leave some for the
next camper Trash
burn all wastes of organic origin in the fire, all other wastes
take with you or put into the trash-bin (burning plastic may form
toxic ga-ses)
prefer reusable dishesAt camping use a special camping site; in
case there is no
such spot around, prefer a place that can been used for camping
already
try to leave no traces in natureBy the water-body wash the
dishes and yourself only on dry
land, away from the border of water satisfy your natural needs
in the place meant
for this purposeAccompanying pets look after your pets, the one
responsible for
their deeds is you in open nature dogs should be leashed and
muzzled By driving motor-vehicles drive only on roads and stop
in parking places give way to walkers and cyclists
We thank you for kind cooperation in maintai-ning the
environment!More info: www.rmk.ee Phone: +372 676 7500

the lake Peipsi, witness the Swedish influences and culture along
the coast and on Estonias islands. Medieval castles and other
ancient buildings sit happily alongside the latest modern wood and
glass buildings in Estonian cities. We have UNESCO protected
medieval and mystical Tallinn Old Town, in the countryside and on
many islands you will
find intriguing evidence of how our culture adapted to the
invasions of Germans, Russians and Swedes over the past
centuries.
Being located in Northern Europe, Estonias four seasons are the
creative inspiration for the connoisseurs of good cuisine who are
keen to prepare and enjoy food made from fresh, fla-vourful
seasonal ingredients. In choosing quality and savoury ingredients
for the Estonian kitchen, we greatly value what Mother Nature
seasonally provides us with. Many restaurants in the larger Estonian
cities and towns can justifiably be proud of them-selves.

1. Kiiu Mungatorn - Kiiu Tower is located in Kuusalu parish, in
the Kiiu manor estate park. The little round stone tower fortress
was built at the beginning of the 16th cen-tury, and is one of the
few fully preserved fortress buildings in Estonia. A caf is open
for visitors in Kiiu Tower.
2. Padise Monastery that once belonged to the Cistercians is the
oldest and most outstanding architectural memorial of the Medieval
Harjumaa region. It was in the 13th century that the construction
work for the Monastery began, and continued with intervals for
about 200 years. The St.Georges Night Uprising in 1343, which was
one of the last battles in the Estonian ancient fight for freedom,
started here in Padise. The Monastery functioned until the Livonian
War broke out and the Ger-man Order took the Monastery over and
dismissed all its monks.
3. Jgala Waterfall - one of the largest wa-terfalls, rich in
water and situated in North Estonia, it is ca 8 meters high. The
best views of the fall can be enjoyed in spring with the high water
level, and in winter. The waterfall is located at the lower course
of the Jgala river in Jelhtme.
4. Museum of the Estonian Struggle for Liberty The only Estonian
war museum is located in Lagedi, in Klma Park in the Pirita river
bight, and displays military hardware, weapons, military uniforms,
and many more items that were used in the previous wars, including
World War II. The Museum is owned by a non-profit or-ganization
managed by Johannes Trs, the founder of the Museum.
5. Rebala Heritage Conservation Area and Museum - Rebala
Heritage Conservation Area is an ancient cultural landscape rich in
historical heritage material. The conserva-tion area of 74 km2
contains more than 300 archeological relics from the Neolithic
Pe-riod. The Visitors Center-Museum of the Conservation Area is
located in the center, in Jelhtme. It introduces the prehistoric
burial culture and everyday life. Next to the Museum you can visit
a permanent ex-position of a burial field with 36 restored
stone-cist barrows. Ph: +372 603 3097

The North-Harju Partnership
The North-Harju Partnership is a self-acting union which
connects municipalities, civil societies and entrepreneurs in
Jelhtme, Viimsi and Rae Parish and opens access to the region for
support given out under LEADER-measures with the intention to
develop tourism potential, small business, value local cultural
heritage and environment with valuable milieu in the area.
NGO North-Harju Partnership was founded on 16th June, 2008. The
Partnership has 11 founding mem-bers. There are 42 members in the
Partnership today.
www.leaderph.eu
The North-Harju Partnership in Viimsi and Jelhtme Parish:The
Tallinn Watersports Club, also known as Watersport.ee, purchased a
speedboat with the help of the North-Harju Patnership in the second
half of 2011 to offer transportation between the islands near
Viimsi and Jelhtme. The intention was to purchase a speedboat with
two engines
to provide safe transportation in any weather between the
islands, especially when liners cannot due to strong
winds.Watersport.ee also does voluntary sea rescue, which is safe
with a speedboat of appropriate power and length. The first purpose
made trip had to be made already a few days after the boat arrived
in July, because 50 people couldnt get back from Naissaare and 140
people couldnt get to the island, even though they had organised
their summer vaca-tions months earlier with liners.
Speedboat Tornado Super 11, named Leader, can carry 12 people
and has a top speed of 60 mph. The engines are two 275HP Mercury
Ve-rados.Outing must be booked and leave from Ro-huneeme Port in
Viimsitelephone + 372 566 08 909 or [email protected].

The North-Harju Partnership
The Museum of Coastal Folk works as a memory organisation for
coastal folk, collecting and exhibit-ing everything related to
coastal cultural heritage in its museums. There are two exciting
museums in Viimsi, Pringli village, which reflect the life of
coastal folk from different angles.
The Museum of Coastal Folk is located in the old schoolhouse of
Pringli village, where exhi-bitions and a permanent exposition
present the different sides of the life of coastal people from the
beginning of recorded history to today. Both the Kirov Fishermans
Collective Farm times and todays coastal folks work and doings are
represented. The museum shop offers a wide va-riety of thematic
souvenirs and gifts. The Viimsi Open Air Museum is located only 400
meters from the Museum of Coastal Folk, where you can enjoy the
authentic milieu of the seaside coastal village around the year.
There is a invaluable view to the Tallinn Old City from the museums
beach, the beach and historic mi-lieu offer amazing views and
pleasant leisure time during summer evenings. The biggest part of
the open air museum is made up of the histor-ic Kingu beach farm,
where fishermans farms with a fish smoking box and port area tell
an en-ticing story of the life in a beach village during the
19th-20th century. There is a farm market on Saturdays, where only
Estonian food and fresh fish are sold. Our museums have become cozy
gathering spots and are attractive cultural and visiting cen-tres
among local and foreign visitors. The museums main event is the
annual Coastal Folk Festival, which shows and propagates coastal
lifestyle and takes place on 28th-29th
July in the Viimsi Open Air Museum in 2012. The festival is
support by Leader. You can find more information on acitivities and
events in the museum on our home page www.rannarahvamuuseum.ee.

Sport bowling, also known as ninepin bowling, is a game which
has old traditions in Estonia and which was widely played during
the first Republic of Estonia. The game has a leading role in the
sport and leisure centre in Peetri bor-ough, at Aruheina road 8.
You can also try darts, pool, beach volleyball during the summer
and enjoy sauna pleasures in addition to bowling. Companies are
expected to carry out their train-ings and events. The sports and

Lilleoru Self Awareness Training Center- In Lilleoru, the
teachings from different cultu-
res have been connected, as the main idea is the same - the
conscious development of hu-man beings. The courses and training
programs take place all year round, but the most diverse
opportuni-ties to develop yourself can be found from the summer
program. The park and the figure in the heart of Lilleo-ru is based
on an ancient pattern. It connects the worlds cultural heritages
and symbolises human nature, wisdom and harmony, which is natural
for all of us. In the herb garden medicinal herbs are grown
organically and later on they are dried and tur-ned into tea. The
Lilleoru Training Center is located in Aru-valla village,
Harjumaa.

The City of Paldiski (Rogerwiek) was founded by Czar Peter I in
1718, when construction of the sea fortress and military port was
started. Katarina II renamed Ro-gerwiek as Baltiiski Port in 1762.
Baltiiski Port was gi-ven city rights in 1783. The modern name
Paldiski was given to the city in 1933.The city was given to the
Soviet Union as a naval base in 1939 and the local residents were
deported. 9 diffe-rent Soviet military units were active in
Paldiski, inclu-ding nuclear missiles and submarines.Paldiski was a
completely closed and secret city from 1968, because of the
Paldiski Nuclear Submarine Trai-ning Center, which was surrounded
by a barbed wire fence. The last Russian warship left Paldiski on
30th August 1994.Paldiski was a part of Keila from 1994-1996. The
city is an independent municipality since 20.10.1996.

The capital of the Estonian Republic is one of the oldest
capital cities in Northern Europe. It is is one of the best
preserved medieval Euro-pean towns, especially the the Old Town
with its unique medieval surroundings. The unique value of Tallinns
Old Town lies first and fore-most in the well-preserved
completeness of its medieval milieu and structure, which has been
lost in most of the capitals of Northern Europe. Since 1997 Tallinn
has been in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The golden era in Tallinns history lies in the period between
the early 15th and mid 16th centuries. During that period Tallinn
attained fame and a powerful role in the Baltic Sea area through
its membership in the Hanseatic League.
During a walk in the Old Town you can feel and touch history
everywhere. The network of wind-ing cobblestone streets and
buildings from the 11th to 15th centuries has been preserved nearly
in its entirety. Thanks to this you can sense the atmosphere of the
old days.
During the past ten years our capital has devel-oped into a very
modern and open city with new tall glass and steel buildings,
illuminated signs of major international companies, large shop-ping
malls, newly renovated airport, ever grow-ing cargo and dozens of
new manufacturing and warehouse complexes.
Tallinn offers much to discover for people with various
interests for those who love the arts, as well as those who are
interested in nightlife, for gourmet lovers, for shoppers, for
friends of nature and many others.
