Welcome to second year This guide includes second year programme structures for students who entered Maynooth University as
a first year in the 2016-17 academic year. It is also for any student who has taken some time out from
their studies, or who repeated first year but who is now ready to return to Maynooth and register for the
second year of their programme.
By now, you are familiar with Maynooth University. Registration for second year happens online, via the
Student Web; you don’t have to go to the Library to have your identity and registration verified as you
did when you were a first year.
As you know, our programme structures are very flexible and many of you will be presented with more
than one registration option when you register online. Some of you will also be offered the opportunity
to transfer to another programme altogether, dependent of course on your subject combination and
results from first year.
Online registration for continuing students opens at 10am, Monday 11th September 2017 via the Student Web
If you will be repeating first year or second year in 2017-18, it is not possible to register online. Repeat
registration takes place in the Student Records Office in Humanity House on the south campus during
the first week of the new academic year. Click here to access repeat registration dates for your programme.

Key terminology Double major
You take two subjects to degree level, with equal study of each.
Major (with minor)
The major takes roughly two thirds of your study after first year, and you take a second subject as a minor.
Minor
A minor involves about one third of your time, and is intended for people who are specialising in their major, but who also want some expertise in a second subject.
Single major
You specialise in one subject; this usually only becomes an option in fourth year for science programmes.
As you register online, you will notice that modules are marked compulsory or optional. A compulsory module is one that must be taken as part of your Year 2 programme. You register for your compulsory modules first and then select the balance of your 60 credits from a selection of optional modules.
Some modules will also be marked ‘required’, this is an important criterion for you to be aware of. A required module must be passed without compensation to progress in the subject. This often means that a mark under 40 will block you from progressing to the next year.
Where there is a choice of modules available in a subject in your programme, you should ensure you have a balance of credits between the two semesters.
V1, Sept.2017
5
Progressing to second year To understand your progression options, you should check your first year examination results.
If your overall result was “Progress”, you passed all the modules you took. If your overall result was Restricted, you can ONLY progress in subjects where you have
a progression result. The progression results are Pass (P), Pass by Compensation (PC), Allowed Progression (AP), and Exempt (PE).
Any subject that has a first year result code of not passed/incomplete (NP) cannot be progressed into second year.
If your result is Restricted Deficit (RD) you are being permitted to progress to second year carrying a deficit of up to ten credits. Students in the deficit category will have to register for additional credits, over and above the regular 60 credits. You will be able to do this when you register online via the Student Web.
Some programme pathways (e.g. Single Major) have minimum first year progression thresholds, for example 50%. Unless you meet this minimum threshold, you will not be able to progress along that pathway and you will not see it when you register online. Minimum thresholds are included in the tables that follow.
If you deferred your studies and are now returning to Maynooth, you can progress to second year with any subject that has a result code of P (Pass). Again, minimum thresholds apply to some pathways.

Course Finder
The online Course Finder tool (available via the ‘For Current Students’ tab on the MU website) contains very useful information on all our programmes, subjects and modules. It gives an overview of every module, key learning outcomes, teaching and learning methods and the type of assessment of each module.
V1, Sept.2017
7
MH101 (including MH101 specific stream options)
The MH101 Arts programme has a selection of pathways from first year. What you see when you register online will depend your particular subject combination. It will also depend on your first year results. If you do not meet the progression rules for a particular subject, you will not see it when you register online.
Well thought out decisions tend to be the best decisions so please take the time to consider what works best for you. What were your strengths in first year, what subjects piqued your interest, what did you not enjoy?
Denominated programmes
The majority of denominated programmes have one fixed pathway from first year into second year. However, some have additional pathways such as a Major with Minor option. Where these exist, you will see these additional pathways options when you register online.
For those of you on a Science programme, your four first year subjects usually reduce to three in second year and in third year, this reduces still further to two. Therefore, take the time to ensure that you’ll have a valid pathway when you progress from second to third year. This is very important.
New programmes
Maynooth University introduced some new programmes in 2016-17. If you registered for one of these new programmes in September 2016, this is the first time that programme will be available to any second year student. For those of you that like to plan ahead, you may not see third year information until later on in this year. However, this will be available on Course Finder well in advance of your progression to third year.
We also have some new programmes commencing in September 2017. Some of you may have already spotted these on the online Course Finder tool. However, with one exception*, these new programmes are not available to students entering second year in 2017-18.
*The Department of English has introduced a Single Major English option in 2017-18 and this will be available to those of your registering for second year in September 2017, dependent on you achieving at least 50% in English in first year.
Amending your registration
As in first year, you can make changes in your subject choices, pathways and perhaps even transfer to another programme in the early stages of semester one. Most of you will find that you have a greater selection of modules within your subjects than you did in first year.
Be careful however, the window of opportunity for amending your registration is shorter in second year than in first – in second year you have until the end of the third week of the first semester to amend your registration online. Changes requested after the deadline require department written permission and will incur a €50 change penalty.
Remember, subjects and modules start from day one so the later you leave it to amend your registration, the more of a subject/module you will miss. You may also find that some assessment has already taken place.

Elective Streams
An Elective is a great way to enhance your degree by enabling you to develop new skills that will complement your chosen programme. Electives allow students to broaden their perspective by studying across disciplines thus learning to think differently and appreciate different viewpoints.
Each Elective is worth 10 credits. Therefore, for all students, an Elective makes up 1/6 of your study in second year. Electives are assessed like any other module and count towards your second year marks. Taking on an Elective does not mean taking on extra modules; students who take an Elective do 10 credits less in their other subject(s). Information on individual Elective offerings is available via Course Finder. There is also plenty of information on Electives on the Programme Advisory website at: https://www.maynoothuniversity.ie/study-maynooth/maynooth-education/electives.

Programme Advisory Office
This year, the Programme Advisory Office is piloting a new project, Welcome Back Week, during the first ten days of the new semester. There will be a series of information sessions to help students settle back into life at Maynooth. The information sessions will be co-delivered by students and will cover: Updates to the Curriculum; new programme options and opportunities for first and
second year students Changes to Marks & Standards Opportunities to get involved in student life Reminder of the academic, personal and professional supports available to all students
across campus A campus tour will take place each day too. All students are welcome to come along to the sessions, including students who would like a re-fresher of their own orientation, students studying on campus for the first time (e.g. transfer students & Kilkenny campus students). Students returning from a break in their studies are most welcome back to Maynooth and we encourage you to contact us during Welcome Back Week.
V1, Sept.2017

Marks and Standards
A reminder about the University’s Marks and Standards, the regulations for assessment. It is very important that all students are aware of these. The full Marks and Standards document is available on the University’s Policies page, as is a shorter summary document. All students are strongly encouraged to know where this information is stored and to read the documentation over the course of their studies. Click Marks and Standards to access Marks and Standards information.

Denominated programme second year options
The tables that follow illustrate your second year options. Many programmes have a single, fixed pathway from first year into second year. Therefore, when you go online, you simply register for second year of that programme. However, some programmes have a choice of subjects. For example, if you are a second year Music Technology student, you must select the subject Music Technology and one of your other first year subjects. Some of the Science programmes also include choice. For our general science programme, your four first year subjects reduce to three in second year. Students should also be aware that even if you are not continuing with Mathematics, first year Mathematics must be passed to progress to second year. The internal Maynooth University qualification code is shown at the start of each table, followed by your programme’s pathway options (if any), the subject code you must register for, and the credits associated with each subject. The tables also show if an Elective Stream is part of your programme. If you opt to select an Elective Stream (10 credits), this reduces the number of credits you take in your main subjects. Finally, any other information you need to be aware of is included in a Notes column. This includes highlighting required modules, that is modules that you must achieve at least 40% in and which cannot be passed by compensation.
