ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF USING SOCIAL NETWORKS

Page 5: V POWIATOWY KONKURS JĘZYKA ANGIELSKIEGO

Nowadays, there are more and more people, who use social networks for different reasons. It is often practiced by everyone, regardless of age. Obviously, it has a lot of Pros and Cons. Firstly, you can have a contact with your acquaintances, even with these from old times and what is associated with it you can know what is happening with them, how they look like right now and what they are up to. Secondly, using these websites is free and available for everybody. Moreover you have a possibility of becoming acquainted with new people and make new friendships. Furthermore, you can advert your company, charity, event or (what who prefers) Youtube channel. Many thematic groups exist on social networks. You can join them and for example develop your passion or get excited about something or someone with its or someone’s fans. Also, you can give your opinion on a topic.Last but not least advantage of social networks is that you can contact and follow famous people and stars of showbiz.

Page 6: V POWIATOWY KONKURS JĘZYKA ANGIELSKIEGO

On the other hand you can get addicted to social networks, and therefore you can hear sounds from Facebook etc., but in fact it is not switched on. The effect of frequent usage of this kind of portals may be also the isolation from the reality and your contact with people become more electronic than physical.Apart from that, social networks, especially people using social networks can be very annoying. For instance they inform about things, that other people probably know. Like posts about weather: “It snows!”. Hello, everybody has windows! In addition to that, so much information available on the Internet for everybody brings a big danger. Your photos can be downloaded and used, remade or published. To make matters worse cyberbullying takes place among youth. Taking everything into account, using social networks has many positive aspects, like finding information and maintain relations with old friends. However you should pay attention to carefulness if you have an account on a website. An important element is to not give personal data. The decision of using social networks or not depends on your own choice.

I was a very weird kid when I was little. I loved making up stories for my friends, playing dangerous games, walking at night when my mom was at work and everything else what is linked with the adrenaline. My parents hoped my penchant would disappear when I grew up. Well, it hasn’t.Lately I have been wondering about the ways how to eliminate boredom and worthlessness out of my future adult-life, so I’ve hit on an idea of travelling. I have always wanted to take a trip around the world. The problem is that it would be hard to find a person who would be fitting to my dreamed-of companion profile. I have high expectations.Firstly, I need my comrade to be someone who I can feel safe with. I’d rather journey with a man than a woman, cause men are typically braver and more protective and women are scared of everything. At least those women I know, but I hope it will change.

Page 10: V POWIATOWY KONKURS JĘZYKA ANGIELSKIEGO

Secondly, this person has to be a total optimist. I wish he would cheer me up every time I would be in my depressing mood and encourage me to do stuff I always wanted to, for example: eating a crocodile in America, strolling around Florence at sunrise or visiting Egyptian tombs. He has to be crazy. Like really crazy.

Thirdly, and finally, I want my colleague to respect me; my words, opinion and actions. However, he shouldn’t be afraid of saying what’s in his mind. I need to be sure that he will always tell me the truth even though I may not like it. I just hate when someone lies to me.

I’m not trustful. At all. I think it will be hard to stumble across somebody as the person described above and my behaviour probably won’t make this easier. So I decided to quit my anti-social prejudices and start to work things out with myself. Recently, I have even noticed an interesting guy at school. I hope I’ll find a courage to talk to him. Maybe he could be my future world-guide. Meeting new people will be an amazing adventure too, won’t it?

The person I would want to travel around the world with, has to be, firstly, someone I like and someone who also likes me. He/she has to like spending time with me, so it would be best if that person was my best friend. It takes a lot of patience for such a long journey, I do not want to go with anyone who is impatient and always in hurry. I need some person with good organizational skills, because I am not the best at it. I am not good at reading maps and my sense of direction is not good ,either. Someone who knows a lot of foreign languages is welcome. I know only English, some German and Spanish.

The best travel mate should not be boring. The World-around journey includes a lot of car or train rides as well as airplane flights. Sometimes they can be really long, so it is important to find a good way to spend this time. I like to travel with talkative and interesting people with a good sense of humor, who knows how to have fun. Also, I love listening to music while travelling and it is kind of important to me to listen to the same, or at least similar genres. That would be just perfect, because while this journey we could go to different concerts and festivals.

Page 13: V POWIATOWY KONKURS JĘZYKA ANGIELSKIEGO

When travelling around the world, many bad things can happen. Someone can steal your wallet or luggage, or even kidnap you. You hear every day about people lost or not coming back from a trip. The person who I would want to travel with has to know what to do in such situations and how to protect themselves or others, and also know first-aid. He/she has to keep calmness in emergency situations and have courage to act, not only stare idly.

Shortly, the person that I want to travel around the world has to be: courageous, trustworthy, amusing, interesting, creative, friendly and organized. These are the most important traits for me but a couple more good traveler's skills are really welcome.

„THERE WAS NO ONE (…)”

Page 16: V POWIATOWY KONKURS JĘZYKA ANGIELSKIEGO

There was no one, except me, my dad and eerie forest. We were walking down an old path that my grandpa shown his only son a few weeks before he retired and flew to Florida to find a better place to live. My grandfather always said it was haunted, but I thought he was joking.

That night my dad wanted to take me camping and he would let me pick the place to go, but it had to be somewhere he knew how to get there. I pointed a random place on the map and when I touched a bunch of words my dad made a sour face, I wondered for a moment why and then I looked on the map. The place we were going to was The Grave Forest. I don’t know if it was good or bad, but this place wasn’t under almost any protection. When we got all packed, we drove my mom’s car, because my dad’s was out of gas.

Page 17: V POWIATOWY KONKURS JĘZYKA ANGIELSKIEGO

Once we got to the place we tried to find a good place to put up our tent, but it was kind of hard. The whole forest was full of really high roots, that if you thought about it, they looked like graves. Finally, we found a spot which was good enough to lay out our “home”. When we finished, we got inside and ate some beef jerky and some fruits. We talked about funny things like we always do and got into our sleeping bags and tried to sleep. Then I heard something from far away. I woke up my dad just when the sound repeated slightly louder this time. He heard it this time. He took an extra pipe from the tent and a flashlight and went outside. Dad sneaked towards the sound. A dark human-shaped form appeared that scared dad very much. He got ready to hit this mystical person, but before that he pointed his flashlight at it and started to calmly laugh. I looked to see who or what it was. It was my mom. We all went inside the tent and mom said she rode her bike here, because she needed her car to drive to a private doctor. My dad gave her the keys and she promised she would drive back the car in the morning. When my mom left me and my dad went straight to sleep. That was maybe the only camping night I had, but the best one.

„THERE WAS NO ONE (…)”

Page 19: V POWIATOWY KONKURS JĘZYKA ANGIELSKIEGO

There was no one in the room when I woke up. The feeling of being alone forthe first time in weeks was odd but surprisingly exhilarating. I could do nothingbut think. Nevertheless, every moment of the fleeting solitude made myintroverted self jump from joy (of course metaphorically speaking as I couldn’teven lift my finger).

I was immersed in thoughts when I heard a few people arguing quietly. Eventhough the voices were almost silent I recognized a few words such as my name and terms connected with medical equipment. Someone, who I assumed was a doctor, gently touched my hand to check my pulse and lifted my eyelids. He was talking to me during the examination. The lack of my response made his voice sound helpless. Suddenly, my hand was grabbed and squeezed strongly by my mother. I heard her desperate calls for me to wake up. I felt it would be a futile attempt but even so I tried my best to do something.

Page 20: V POWIATOWY KONKURS JĘZYKA ANGIELSKIEGO

A few minutes went by and I still didn’t give any signs. The doctor started calmly talking to my parents. One term in particular caught my attention. Euthanasia. This topic had been mentioned repeatedly before. I realized it was the second anniversary of my “falling asleep”. I had already heard so many times about euthanasia that I didn’t even bother to feel scared anymore. Yet this time something was different. Instead of the usual reaction of my parents which was arguing, there was acute silence followed by crying.

The panic started to claw its way into my stomach. My thoughts were gettingchaotic. They were really considering it this time! With the will to live Ifrantically tried to open my eyes, to move my fingers, at least to jerk. Nothingworked, as always. Cries of my parents were getting louder and louder and myheart twisted painfully in my chest at the thought of not seeing my family again.

With the last hope I focused all my strength on wrinkling up my nose. And itworked! In one moment the room fell silent. People crowded beside my bed, asking for another sign. Encouraged by my small victory I did it again. Andagain. The room filled with screams of joy.

Page 21: V POWIATOWY KONKURS JĘZYKA ANGIELSKIEGO

At this point, a sentence from “The Beatrice Letters” by Lemony Snicket wassurprisingly accurate:

“Strange as it may seem, I still hope for the best, even though the best, like an interesting piece of mail, so

rarely arrives, and even when it does it can be lost soeasily”.

My little achievement gave both me and my parents a sparkle of hope that mystory would have a happy end. I knew it was just the beginning of my strugglebut at the same time I had new reserves of faith and was ready to fight forwaking up.

SOCIAL NETWORK SITES – ABSORBING ENTERTAIMENT OR LOSS OF TIME?

Page 24: V POWIATOWY KONKURS JĘZYKA ANGIELSKIEGO

If we want this or not , the world moves forward what causes the development of modern technology. The expansion of these innovations leads to the increase of the number of social networking sites. But „all that glitters is not gold”.

Everyone knows: Facebook, Twitter or Ask and almost everybody uses it. The main benefit, is that these pages are for free and they are easy to operate. Setting up a profile takes only a few minutes. Moreover, without going out we can contact people from all over the world. You write your message fast and even faster you get a reply from the other end of the world. Furthermore, if you are a fan of the Beatels or Mick Jagger you can follow their fun pages on Facebook or Twitter - you can get to know a lot of curiosities from their lives.

Page 25: V POWIATOWY KONKURS JĘZYKA ANGIELSKIEGO

On the other hand, social networking sites have their drawbacks. To begin with, these webpages may be addictive. Many students spend too much time in front of their screens, for example my friends log in Facebook every 5minutes. It distracts our attention because while doing homework or learning a lot of students can't help entering the social networking sites. What is more, this could be dangerous. When you set up a profile you fill a lot of private information like telephone number and address. We have to remember that there are many criminals who can steal our identity and take advantage of it. Last but not least, is the fact that a few students took their lives after they seen a numerous amount of negative comments on their profile . Some spoilt children launch an account to sneer at the others. Because of it, children fall into depression.

All things considered, Social Networking Sites have as many benefits as drawbacks. I believe that these pages are worth our attention only if we can use them in a reasonable way.

Advantages and disadvantages of social networking sites

Page 27: V POWIATOWY KONKURS JĘZYKA ANGIELSKIEGO

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube – these names aren’t unfamiliar to us anymore. As the biggest social networking websites, they gather around themselves over two and a half billiards of active users. These and many other sites connect people from all around the world. On the other hand, these places on the web cause a lot of controversies and discussions about privacy on the net. How many people, so many opinions. Some people love social networks and use them regularly, others hate them and don’t even have an account in any of social networking sites. But who is right? In my opinion, the truth lies in the middle.

First of all, social networks let us stay in touch with our acquaintances, family and friends. We can contact them, no matter if we just want to reunite with an old friend or share a photo from a trip with our classmates. Sites such as Facebook let us chat our friends instantly. You just need an internet connection. We’ve never had such, I dare say, endless possibilities to communicate.

Page 28: V POWIATOWY KONKURS JĘZYKA ANGIELSKIEGO

However, social networks may be a serious threat to our privacy. The matter doesn’t involve any hackers trying to spy our private conversations anymore. There’s some exaggeration in this statement, but in fact, we make their job much easier by uploading to these sites way too much personal information. By observing one’s public profile, we can quite easily find out about their hobbies, jobs, likes and dislikes, lifestyle, partners and views. People often aren’t even aware they publish so much information to so many people. It happens, that employers often look through their candidates’ profiles to see whether they’re suitable for the jobs they’re applying for.

Nevertheless, we’re not the only people who socialize in social networking sites. We can meet there many celebrities, musicians, bands, film stars and even politicians! They post many things that a typical fan wouldn’t see without social networks, such as some photos or announcements which give us some look into their private lives. Unfortunately, profiles of some controversial people can sometimes be filled up with serious, often pointless arguments. They are often ignored by the stars themselves and deleted by administrators of the sites.

Page 29: V POWIATOWY KONKURS JĘZYKA ANGIELSKIEGO

Unfortunately, an ordinary person doesn’t just turn a deaf ear to it. Social networks are a tool that is often used to bully people. Massive attacks of hatred, directed at one person appear quite often. Sometimes a bullied person can even commit a suicide after seeing lots of violent or hateful comments on some disgraceful videos with them, playing a leading role. We often forget that once we upload something to the internet, it stays there forever and with more or less effort it can be downloaded by someone unauthorized, even if we think we deleted it.

Social networking sites are a real never ending story. One thing we should keep in our minds for sure is, that despite many advantages, they can put our common sense and patience through the hoops.
