The PMEGP has helped many young entrepreneurs'

find a foothold, and created over 15 lakh jobs.

Like many from her generation, Abha Nangana,

wanted to become an entrepreneur - providing

employment rather than being employed. The post-

graduate in Computers from Ambala had big dreams

and proper plans. Money was the sole constraint. "I

left my job and started a terracotta pottery unit with

whatever I could gather from my savings and parents.

But, it was just not enough. It was through the Prime

Programme(PMEGP)that I got a loan of Rs 2.00 lakh

and a subsidy of Rs 40,000 which let me establish my

own venture," Nangia said.

A year after it was setup, Vani Creations is receiving

orders worth lakhs. Nangia provides employment to

six workers, earning R8 3000 to 6000 per month, aand her unit makes a profit of around Rs 40,000 every

month. The scheme has turned around the lives of

two lakh young entrepreneurs till now running units

that manufacture articles ranging from jewellery to

handmade paper. Around 15 lakh jobs have been

created in urban and rural India through these

ventures. The PMEGP a credit-link subsidy

programme, was announced by Prime Minister

Manmohan Singh. On Independence day 2008.

Though it had a slow start, PMEGP has witnessed a

good response over the last two years. According to

the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, the

subsidy disbursed to beneficiaries was 905 crore

against the target of Rs 836 crore with average

disbursement of RS1.9 lakh per unit-- in 201l-12.

"The seheme has now gathered steam”, Shri K.S Rao

Dy. CEO (NZ) PMEGP,,said.

Paving the road to a brighter future the scheme, which

was launched in 2008 the year of the glob downturn

has helped create lakhs of first-generation

entrepreneurs in the country. 16

to get preliminary knowledge and technique

involved therein. Initially he started with one Apis

cerana (A. cerana) colony and then he purchased 5

colonies of Apis me/litera (A. me/litera) from one

private beekeeper during the year 2007 and

decided to start beekeeping on commercial level

with Apis me/litera considering the honey yield. He

came across various difficulties due to lack of

knowledge and hence this activity was not accepted

and appreciated by his family members.

While going to nearby villages for sale of

vegetables earlier helped him to get knowledge of

migratory sites. During first migration he got

production of 30 kg. honey/colony and

compensated his initial investment. Then onwards

there was continuous colony divisions and in turn

honey production. Thus, he could get 20 divisions

per colony. At present on an average yield of honey is

Can anybody believe that a commerce graduate

accepts biology based Beekeeping Industry as his

sole occupation? Probably hardly anybody, however,

here is a success story of Shri. Dinkar Vitthalrao Patil

from village Chakur of Latur district from Maharashtra.

Shri. Dinkar Patil belongs to farmer family in

Latur district. After completing education upto B.

Com., he opted job in plastic molding unit in Pune.

After five years he left this job and started working in

own Agriculture land to cultivate crops like Sugar

cane, Soybean, Sunflower and vegetables.

Simultaneously he was transporting vegetables from

the farmers of that area to nearby market by driving

tempo. In year 2005, Maharashtra State Khadi and

Village Industry Board (MSKVIB) kept some of their

bee colonies in village Chakur, after observing these

colonies he was inspired and decided to take up

Beekeeping activity. Accordingly, he underwent ten

days beekeeping training arranged by MSKVI Board

Shubha M. Majumdar, R. K. Singh, S. M. Pokare Central Bee Research and Training Institute, KVIC, Pune.

supplies to needy persons. He brings various

beekeeping equipments from Ambala and sales at

his apiary for local beekeepers. At present there are

160 colonies in his apiary maintained by 4

employees. Three employees are working on

commission basis which is 50 % of honey production

after deduction of all expenses. Every year he is

getting his balance sheet audited from one Chartered

Accountant. To extend this activity he went to

Srinagar, Anathnag to learn colony management

technique in that area.

In future he is interested to install honey

processing plant and to start training activities in

beekeeping to encourage local youths to take up

beekeeping as their profession. His experience and

expertise is utilized by various agencies to attract

farmers from rural area towards beekeeping industry

as a good source of income. At present he is writing

one book on Beekeeping in Marathwada in Marathi.

As a part of social work he is advisor to many

of the local beekeepers to overcome their

problems. State Beekeeping Extension Centre, CBRTI,

KVIC, Pune has organized training program on 'Queen

Rearing' in his apiary at Chakur in the year 2010 for 20

beneficiaries and this Queen Rearing training was

found to be very useful for the beekeepers to

produce the good quality of queen bees and also for

the better management of their bee colonies for

multiplication, etc. He is invited as a guest lecturer in

MSKVI Board, Agriculture colleges, School of

Biotechnology, Baramati. Due to his expertise and

vision he was invited as a member of National Bee
